reboots are tough

a reboot for a franchise like warhammer fantasy will always be a hard undertaking. The fight scenes are good, the character development is ok. But the biggest negative is the worldbuilding. all we really get is "oh yeah, chaos destroyed everything". fair enough, but where are we, where is Azyr, or akshi? are we in the physical world in this scene or the warp?

Short story, pretty decent.

I'm not entirely sure that this is worth an audible credit, but the rest of the books appear to be longer. The story is a good introduction. The voice actor does a great job.

A good entry point for Age of Sigmar new comers

It's the Age of Sigmar starter set but told through a story and it sets up the universe for further tales.

Enjoyable but short

It was enjoyable, and I appreciate it is basically just an introduction to the series but it is incredibly short with basically just one battle. I bought it in the sale and would have been annoyed if I'd paid full price for it, but I've already bought the second book so it can't have been that bad! :)

Pass this one!

I could not finish this book. The story started out so funny and entertaining that I immediately order the second book. I listened to 5 hours of the book and 80% of Navas conversation was sexual. Nava is a horny, mouthy, irresponsible young lady. Her powers manifested when she was giving a hand job to a demon. Granted she did not know that he was a demon, but it set the tone for the book. She whines because she was chosen over her brother and because she did not have the years of training like the others. She looks at all the men as a sexual object.

The demon club is an old Jewish organization created to fight demons, it is similar to the Templars. Young Jewish males are identified at birth to have the characteristics to become a hunter. They spend 20 or 21 years of training. On their 21st birthday they are tested for their magic ability.

I am not a prude. I dont expect urban fantasy genre to be on par with fine literature. I do like a little romance and even a roll in the hay, swearing is okay too. I like strong kick ass women, with a little snark and she MUST be intelligent. Nava is missing the intelligence, and self-respect even a sexual liberated woman must have. I return the second book.

Amazing

This book is absolutely hilarious. I was dying of laughter in the middle of my office to the point where I actually had to take the ear buds out and explain to my bewildered coworkers why I was laughing so hard. At one point, I left the room altogether and listened to the scene outside where I wouldn't be a distraction to others. Very good book that brightened my boring Saturday.

nice to have a more organic attraction between the two she is a party girl who seems to be constantly in heat surround around a bunch of very attractive men and hooked up with the first aggressive man that came on to her after she found out he was great in bed she wanted more and more of it. He on the other hand seems like naval reminds him of someone and is a major control freak which excites her more. So reguardles how poorly he treats her she will still go back for her physical needs.

Great 2nd book in this series!

Joe Hempel is a tremendous narrator, and I've found I quite like J.A. Cipriano's writing. As with the first book, I liked the blending of Max's real life, and his gamer life. I thought this was a great addition to the series, though I wish it was longer. Just makes me want the next one to come out that much sooner!

I can't wait till the next one.

This is so fun, not only are you involved in a game, but also the personal lives of the gamers. Two who are promised and two who have taken the quest to get promised. What happens next? A highly entertaining VR fantasy adventure

The Vale of Three Wolves is a highly entertaining virtual reality fantasy adventure. The story has a detailed VR world, interesting and involving characters, lots of action, and a bit of romance. The narrator does a terrific job bringing the story to life.

I really love this author's story that keeps you entertained right from the start. It keeps your focus on this book and never allows your attention to waver. So good! I absolutely love novels that have this ability to keep me focused and excited for what is to come.

D&D style game with full immersion

Welcome to the 2nd book in a series that is part of a larger loosely connected style/series called LitRPG. This style of book focuses on futuristic gaming style that fully immerses the player into the game and allows them to essentially feel and live the life of their character. This one focuses on the new quests in a massive gaming world and specifically on a side quest that few seek and even fewer success at. The rings of promise. They allow the seekers to bond and eventually overcome the limits of the privacy filter so that they can then bond in the real world as well. Great story with great narration. Loved book one; this one was good but...

I was so excited to see a sequel to The Nothing Girl. I loved that book so much and I wanted more of Frogmorton and Russell and Jenny. I even pre-ordered this listen so I wouldn't miss a thing.

The narration was some of the best I've ever listened to. Lucy Price-Lewis was exceptional. She gave us the kinetic nature of Russell, delivered Jenny's stutter without making her seem like a caricature, and still made us believe in talking golden donkeys.

I love that the story picked up after Russell and Jenny were married. The usual suspects were there and there were warm fuzzys all around.

Where I take exception with this listen was in the (SPOILERS) kidnap and subsequent escape. It was so extreme it bordered on slapstick. The conversation between Jenny and Thomas was just too ridiculous (yes, I know she was talking to a golden donkey, but still.) I rolled my eyes so many times during that sequence that I almost hurt myself. And that hospital scene. Why wouldn't they tell the cops the whole story????!!!!!

I have listened to quite a few Jodi Taylor books and I am a definite fan. I liked this book but it was the narration that saved this listen for me.

Less charming, more silly

The Nothing Girl was charming in the quirky appeal that Frogmorton had on the reader, but this version has too much silliness for me to enjoy. Russels witty conversation in the original sounds much more condescending and their daughters presence is very fleeting. Are they the worst parents ever??? Joy seems to have a pretty free range childhood experience, in my opinion.

The ending was almost too silly for me to handle. I actually rolled my eyes a number of times. Performance was strong like the first but the story was rubbish.

Painfully uninteresting

I liked the first book in the series particularly because of how good the narrow is, but this book was just a poor repetition of everything that happened in the nothing girl. there was nothing fresh about it and the heroine's self pity and insecurities became unbearable after a point.

Awesome shifter book

I loved this series and the authors have left off at such a good point. I cant wait for the next book to come out! The narrator does an amazing job too!

Another great book in the series.

Yet another great book in the series. The authors are great at building a world in our world. Full of magic, shifters, fae and love - this book has it all. This book came to a nice conclusion while setting us up for the next book. It didn't leave on a cliff hanger, but it did let us know what the characters next adventure with be.

The narrator, again, did a wonderful job. It was smooth and the characters had defined voices. It was easy to listen to.

I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Wonderful in book and audio formats!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If your a fan of fantasy and video games you can not go wrong listening to this wonderful audio book. Hero of Thera is the type of book/audio book that you just want to keep reading/listening to to the very end, then start it up again. The characters are well written and like-able allowing you to enjoy the journey along with them.

Picked this up a but reluctantly and I am so happy I did!

Fantastic world and character building with a wonderful narrator. This title went by very fast and I am desperate to hear more. I greatly look forward to see where this author goes with this story.

I do not try to summarize the story or characters in a novel because I am terrible at it, this was a good LitRPG and if you enjoy the genre I believe you will enjoy this one too.

One of the best LitRPG' out there

Wow! Where to begin. If you are a LitRPG fan stop reading this and go buy the damn book already. If you are not a fan or don't know what that is have no fear this book will entertain you. It has it all everything you want in a story from the rollercoaster of good/bad win/loose, relationships, battles, humor, listen by yourself or with family. It's a gem. Jeff does the narration and well, you can tell he's no rookie. I did receive this book from audioboom for an unbiased opinion and could give two shits if I got it for free or not. This was an epic tale, and extremely entertaining. I absolutely cannot wait until book 2

the assassin

Another great book by Gemmell love waylander,'book moves well. Readed these years ago Against The Horde was my first,in the 80's now get to listen to them.Nice job Sean. wow!!!

A personal favourite

As with all of David Gemmell's books the characters in Waylander are colourful and fully fleshed out. The overriding plot is essentially straightforwards, but the Author is still able to work in some clever twists and turns. This is one audio book that I will listen too again in the future ... a credit well spent.

I have been waiting for these books!!!!!

I have read Gemmell books for years now over and over again. I even listened to the original CD's back in the day! These are EPIC novels that are so well done and timeless. The Drenai and the Reganti books are my favorite ones. I do plan to buy all my favorite books and have a lot to look forward to. Oh, I have collected most of his books in paper back over the years so there is no worries about buying these if you love EPIC Fighting/swords/monsters/honorable stories!

First Gemmell book I ever read, hooked me for life. This audio version really brings Waylander to life. I'm getting ALL of the audio books of David Gemmell, his books are top notch.

a fun and interesting story underneath the humor

If you are in the mood for a literary role-playing game (LitRPG) tale full of fantasy humor, snarky wit, and slapstick comedy, Fantasy Online: Hyperborea is the book you are looking for. This is another story authored by Harmon Cooper and the audiobook edition masterfully performed by Jeff Hays. It is the first book, in what appears will be a new series which takes place in the Proxmia universe. Because the books events occur in the same universe as The Feedback Loop series (which I highly recommend you read), a few of those characters make cameos in this story; such as Dirty Dave. I quite enjoyed the tie in and interaction having listened to the entire Feedback Loop series. As this is a separate series, one is not required to have any knowledge of the other series events, but it does make for some additional entertainment value. If you have listened to any of Harmon Coopers other works and enjoyed them, you will not be disappointed by picking up this one.

The book is a coming of age story centered around two battling brothers who are both a part of a crime lords family. This book contains a fair amount of action, adventure and fighting, both in the physical and virtual worlds. The opening scene is one that hooks you from the beginning and the story continues to unfold after that. Not only was this scene tense and action-packed, it was rather emotional and impactful. The author takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride which seems to decrease in its intensity as you progress down the tracks. I can say without a doubt, I did not feel as close to the main characters than I did at this scene. There were a few scenes containing or alluding to slight romantic aspects, but nothing that felt deep and meaningful. I really liked the characters, but I wanted to see more of their flaws and need to survive as a group; apart from times of fighting monsters together.

Compared to his other works, this book is zanier and at times feels a little over the top with its continuous flow of pokes, zings, and disses happening between characters. I like when there is tension and banter within a traveling party, but this book seemed much more light-hearted then the others were. Although there was a great and compelling story underneath, I wished at times that humor was not spread so liberally where the core story aspects felt obscured or covered.

Two Legends Come to Audible

In the early 90s, back when there were still bookstores to browse in, I picked up a copy of David Gemmells Lion of Macedon because I thought it was about one of my favorite historical figures, Alexander the Great. Well, it was and it wasnt, but it was a great book and I went on to read Legend," Gemmells first published book, and then pretty much everything else he wrote (which was a lot) before his premature death in 2006.

These books introduced me to heroic fantasy and led me into Guy Gavriel Kay and later G.R.R. Martin, Michael J. Sullivan, and Brandon Sanderson. The shifting POV that is prevalent in all these authors' works, the mixture of magic grounded in a world that is often recognizable (history shifted 25% to the fantastical, as I believe Kay has said), the many shades of gray between black and whiteall these are present in Gemmells books, which now, finally, are coming to Audible. Hooray!

In Legend, the fort of Dros Delnoch stands between the Drenai civilization and devastation. It is undermanned and soon to be under siege by the barbarian Nadir under their leader Ulrich. The earl in command of Dros Delnoch has sent out two desperate pleas, one to The 30, an order of (surprise) 30 warrior monks with both physical and supernatural gifts; and a second plea to the legendary hero Druss of the Axe. The tales say Druss and his axe Skaga together once turned back an invading army of thousands. The earl, who was at that battle, knows its somewhat but not really true, but he needs someone to restore morale and stop the desertions. Now 60 years old, Druss is called upon for one more epic stand.

Once you know Gemmell admitted to a fascination with the Battle of the Alamo, the general outline of the story of the book wont be a surprise, although its outcome might be.

Gemmells books are less poetic that Guy Gavriel Kays and (thankfully) less dismally violent than George R.R. Martins. In all Gemmells books, the underlying metaphysical battle concerns the balance between Creation (the Source) and Chaos, between life and destruction. There is also the Void, a gray and dismal state of stasis (purgatory?). There is a hopeful note in most of these books that I find is lacking in today's postapocalyptic fantasy.

As a first novel, Legend definitely has flaws, but it sets the stage for the Drenai tales, one of several series and a number of stand-alones the prolific Gemmell wrote. The Drenai books (Ive listed them below) dont have to be read in order, and the last few are, in my opinion, not all that good--along with some great stuff, Gemmell penned several 2-star stinkers. The different books take place backward and forward in Drenai history.

Magic wins

I am in love with this whole series. I feel the characters are perfectly portrayed, and each as an individual. Class, Del, and Phoenix are three kick butt girls who went through a bad experience that made them lose their memory. They are criminals just because of their magical abilities so they are hard to trust anyone. It takes a lot of effort and time for them to trust the men that show up and even their best friends.

Great ending

This last book of the series pulls Dell's life together with the ultimate battle to finish her struggles. A happy ending as I like, now for Nix's story.
