Welcome to the world of the fabulously wealthy in London, 1909, where dresses and houses are overwhelmingly opulent, social class means everything, and women are taught to be nothing more than wives and mothers. Into this world comes 17-year-old Victoria Darling, who wants only to be an artist - a nearly impossible dream for a girl.
After Vicky poses nude for her illicit art class, she is expelled from her French finishing school. Shamed and scandalized, her parents try to marry her off to the wealthy Edmund Carrick-Humphrey. But Vicky has other things on her mind: her clandestine application to the Royal College of Art; her participation in the suffragette movement; and her growing attraction to a working-class boy who may be her muse - or may be the love of her life. As the world of debutante balls, corsets, and high-society obligations closes in around her, Vicky must figure out: Just how much is she willing to sacrifice to pursue her dreams?

    Victorious indeed!!
Historical Fiction had quickly become my favorite genre, and its books like this that make it so.
    Great Listen
Loved the story about the struggle for women's rights intertwined with the art world. It took a great deal of courage to do what they did.
    Not bad but not good.
I didn't mind the story, but it dragged. I found myself wanting this book to end.

High school senior point guard Jonas Dolan is on the fast track to a basketball career until an unthinkable choice puts his future on the line.
Levi was simple, like a child. It was the best thing about him, and it was the worst, too.
When high school senior Jonas moves to Seattle, he is glad to meet Levi, a nice, soft-spoken guy and fellow basketball player. Suspense builds like a slow drumbeat as listeners start to smell a rat in Ryan Hartwell, a charismatic basketball coach and sexual predator. When Levi reluctantly tells Jonas that Hartwell abused him, Jonas has to decide whether he should risk his future career to report the coach.
Pitch-perfect basketball plays, well-developed characters, and fine storytelling make this heartbreaking psychological sports novel a slam dunk.

Book 4 in the Lambda Award-winning Russel Middlebrook Series!
People aren't always what they seem to be. Sometimes we even surprise ourselves. So discovers seventeen-year-old Russel Middlebrook in The Elephant of Surprise, a stand-alone sequel to Brent Hartinger's landmark 2003 gay young adult novel Geography Club (which has now been adapted as a feature film co-starring Scott Bakula and Nikki Blonsky). In this latest audiobook, Russel and his friends Min and Gunnar are laughing about something they call the Elephant of Surprise - the tendency for life to never turn out as expected. Sure enough, Russel soon happens upon a hot but mysterious homeless activist named Wade, even as he's drawn back to an old flame named Kevin.
Meanwhile, Min is learning surprising things about her girlfriend Leah, and Gunnar just wants to be left alone to pursue his latest technology obsession. But the elephant is definitely on the move in all three of their lives. Just who is Wade and what are he and his friends planning? What is Leah hiding? And why is Gunnar taking naked pictures of Kevin in the shower?
The Elephant of Surprise includes Hartinger's trademark combination of humor and romance, angst and optimism. Before the story is over, Russel and his friends will learn that the Elephant of Surprise really does appear when you least expect him - and that when he stomps on you, it really, really hurts.

To make things worse, Amy and Adam are involved in the "color game" at school, an experiment that's designed to make students aware of class and racial prejudices.
Now the experiment threatens to alienate Amy from her friends and tear her apart from Adam. She knows it's time to rebel against the color game. But will the rest of the class follow her lead?

    The Color Game Changes Lives
This book is about how labels don't define you and who you are. The social and economic level should not influence who you choose as friends. A teacher plays The Color Game with the students and tries to show them that there are differences in the world, but we often choose not to change them. Author Gloria Milklowitz shows that the characters changes throughout the novel through the students' experience of undergoing a change in their social status. I give this book five stars because reading it is pretty easy to read: The book carries the reader along chronologically. I like how everything comes together at the end.
Note: The above-review is from one of my students. We both enjoyed the book very much. I highly recommend it to middle-school readers.
    Many typing errors
I read this book in my youth & wanted to read it again. It was good, just as I had remembered. There were tons of typing errors throughout the book. The last name of the character 'Adam' is changed from 'Tarcher' to 'Tardier' and back through the book. I found myself rereading several sentences due to the typing errors.
    Good message for today's times
Shared reading this with my son for summer reading assignment. Good message for today's times. Enjoyed the read !
Great book for teenagers, but poor e-book quality
Enjoyed the book very much, my daughter had to read it for class so I thought I would read it too. Glad I did. HOWEVER, there were several typos in each chapter which should not be in an e-book, especially in one that I paid for.
    Excellent piece of juvenile sociology.

    Publisher's Summary:
Colt and Julia were secretly together for a year, and no one ever knew, not even Julia's boyfriend. Why would they-they were from two different crowds.
Julia lived in her country club world and Colt...didn't. Then Julia dies in a car accident. Colt is devastated but can't mourn openly, and he's tormented that he may have played a part in her death. And when Julia's journal ends up in his hands, he is forced to relive their year together - just when he is trying to forget. The problem is, how do you get over someone who was never really yours to begin with?
    Editorial Reviews:
Jennifer R. Hubbard's award-winning debut novel begins with a tragic death, that of privileged high school student Julia Vernon. For a year Colton Morissey, from the undesirable part of town, had been having a covert relationship with Julia, a relationship that the young lovers kept hidden even from their closest friends. But Julia's death changes everything, especially after her private journal comes into Colt's possession.
Canadian voice actor Vikas Adam has an unrivaled emotional command of this young adult material, drawing the listener into each and every nuanced moment of suffering and love (chronicled in flashbacks), even managing to make his female voices poignant rather than comical.

    Review From Gypsy Book Reviews
I didn't know what to expect when I heard about The Secret Year. I honestly didn't expect an aching story that would stay with me long after I finished it.
So, obviously, this is a book about death and guilt and forbidden love and damnit, I liked it so much. I can see why some people would hate it, but when I think about The Secret Year, all I want to do is shake the people who didn't like it and scream, "What is wrong with you?!"
Jennifer R. Hubbard is an amazing writer. She captured the distance of the poor kids to the rich kids. I was shocked at how well that dynamic was written. I also loved the way she handled Colt's grief and everybody else's. Actually, I just love the entire book.
Colt... poor Colt. I wanted to hug him and tell him he could talk to me. I just felt SO BAD for him. He and Julia had something, maybe not something special, but it was something and it really affected Colt after her death.
Before I totally ruin the book for you, let me say that you NEED to read this book. It's delicious and I want to erase my memory of it and reread The Secret Year. It. Is. So. Good.
    The Secret Year
I have to say I do read a lot and you come across all different types of books. This one was like a diamond in the rough. I wish it was longer. Colt was just crushed when Julia died and then thanks to her brother, he gets to relive their time together via her journal. It was an original story. I do wish that the ending was a little more developed.
Would I read it again, yes! And I would recommend it to a friend!
Emotional Story and a Solid Debut
At the end of reading this, I was not quite sure if this was truly amazing, or only close.
Was the writing good? Yes, Hubbard has a way with words that kept me turning the pages. I really loved Colt, and thought he was a great narrator. He's simple, sweet, easy-going, down to earth. No complications.
Julia, the girl Colt had been seeing for a year in secret, was a little more complex than he was. I found her journal entries to be a major point of interest, and I kept changing my mind about her.

A Good Read about the Great Depression
This is an interesting story about a fascinating time in our nation's life. The author is reasonably faithful to the history of the CCC, in particular the suspicion that many people had about a government program intruding on their lives. I could have wished for greater character development, especially re: Hitch caught between two love interests. But, on the whole, a good read!

Our school district just purchased this novel with a new textbook adoption. Each of us struggled to get through it and many just plan gave up on it. If the teacher can't get through the text, how can expect a student to embrace it? Too many other novels worthy of teaching when time is limited due to testing. This is a strong pass.
    Four Stars
Great book. My students love it.
    Great Book
I liked this book more than I thought I would. I didn't really dislike anything about the book. It was a great book.
    A wonderful YA book!
Seventeen-year-old Moss Trawnley has a big job on his hands. The Great Depression is ravaging America. His Ma is depending on him to help support the family. His Pa has been missing for years. When he's let go from his job in Texas, Moss decides it's time to head out after his Pa, who used to run their farm before the Depression cost their family everything. What Moss finds is a drunk and the truth that his real job is to become a man he can respect, against the odds.
A judge points Moss in the direction of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Moss jumps at the chance for a steady paycheck and somewhere to eat, sleep, and work for six months. What he doesn't foresee are the friends he'll make along the way or the man he will become.
A proud and honest main character and several side characters with appealing nicknames like Apple, Romeo, and The Senator, are just part of the strength of Ingold's Hitch. Filled with images of the dry promise of Montana, boys struggling to be men in a time when men were being broken by misfortune, and the deeds that make boys brothers, Ingold's Hitch is a digestible historical book for the teenage reader.
Ingold's attention to historical details and her use of historical dialect to relay Moss's story, help the book move along while also teaching the reader about a period that defined the American work ethic.

    Members Reviews:
    did not enjoy this narrator
the book is written from the viewponts of several people. there are no audible breaks between stories. she jumps from one character to the next without even a pause. confusing. content wouldn't make sense. I didn't realize she had changed characters. my mind would still be listening to Laura's story not realizing the story had switched to nicholes or jimmys story.
Just Who is the Real Terrorist?
It has been said that we cannot focus ourselves on destroying an evil person without becoming somewhat like them. When teenaged Laura's vibrant, life-loving brother, only eleven years old, is killed by a homemade bomb, deliberately given him by a stranger while leaving a London subway, Laura vows to revenge him. She sets out on a bitter mission that obsesses her and alienates her from her worried friends. Caroline Cooney is a gifted story teller who extends suspense to a painful and masterfully-handled length that keeps you turning pages. The characterizations are compelling and the novel has a message that reminds me of a Shakespearean one. Can anyone, like Hamlet, revenge herself on an evildoer without becoming somewhat like him? Is the price worth it?

The Good Braider was selected as the 2013 Bank Street College of Education Best Book of the Year and a book of Outstanding Merit.
Viola's strikingly original voice sings out the story of her family's journey from war-torn Sudan, to Cairo, and finally to Portland, Maine. Here, in the sometimes too close embrace of the local Southern Sudanese Community, she dreams of South Sudan while she tries to navigate the strange world of America - a world where a girl can wear a short skirt, get a tattoo or even date a boy; a world that puts her into sharp conflict with her traditional mother who, like Viola, is struggling to braid together the strands of a displaced life. Terry Farish's haunting novel is not only a riveting story of escape and survival, but the universal tale of a young immigrant's struggle to build a life on the cusp of two cultures.
    Members Reviews:
A Painful Truth and compelling story.
The struggle of South Sudan holds many war stories. This retelling of one girl's battle is very close to the truth and at times hard to endure as the reader is attached to the primary characters. However, it is a brilliant story and so full of hope too. I highly recommend this book.
