If life were fair, Jam Gallahue would still be at home in New Jersey with her sweet British boyfriend, Reeve Maxfield. She'd be watching old comedy sketches with him. She'd be kissing him in the library stacks.
She certainly wouldn't be at The Wooden Barn, a therapeutic boarding school in rural Vermont, living with a weird roommate, and signed up for an exclusive, mysterious class called Special Topics in English.
But life isn't fair, and Reeve Maxfield is dead.
Until a journal-writing assignment leads Jam to Belzhar, where the untainted past is restored, and Jam can feel Reeve's arms around her once again. But there are hidden truths on Jam's path to reclaim her loss.

    Not really about Sylvia Plath
So much promise, so much potential, so spot on. Then late in the book: poof, the plot twist took me right out of it and took the book away from what the cover promised. Still, it had some great stuff on Sylvia Plath.
    Y/A Story, Suitable for Adults
Pretty good story, with good narration. Jorjeana Marie had the right voice for the 1st person narration. Unfortunately, the big "twist" in the plot was no surprise AT ALL. (Hint: if you've read "We Were Liars", this is quite similar).
    Amazing
I loved the story and the personalities shown through the sayings and the voices given to the characters, it was just c'est magnifique
    different
this book was very interesting. I definitely didn't see the plot twist coming. I would've loved to have had a teacher like Mrs Q
    highly entertaining; great story
wolitzer has done it again! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the characters and the narrator was wonderful. the characters well very well fleshed out and sympathetic. not once did I feel compelled to scream out of irritation of the over used emo or horribly narcissistic teen trope. this was simply the best.

    Publisher's Summary:
The fascinating, shocking, and ultimately quite hopeful story of one teen's downward spiral into mental illness by the best-selling author of Tweak.
Miles is the ultimate unreliable narrator - a teen recovering from a schizophrenic breakdown who believes he is getting better - when in reality he is growing worse.
Driven to the point of obsession to find his missing younger brother, Teddy, and wrapped up in a romance that may or may not be the real thing, Miles is forever chasing shadows. As Miles feels his world closing around him, he struggles to keep it open, but what you think you know about his world is actually a blur of gray, and the sharp focus of reality proves startling.
Written by the New York Times best-selling author of Tweak, Schizo is the fascinating, and ultimately quite hopeful, story of one teen's downward spiral into mental illness as he chases the clues to a missing brother. Perfect for fans of Thirteen Reasons Why, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and It's Kind of a Funny Story.

    More please Nic Sheff!!!!
This novel is a true story for so many people, my heart is full of emotion by how far we have come with mental illness. I have been through and around it my whole life. This is a bittersweet story that will make you cry tears of sorrow and joy! I just finished "Tweak" before this which is the memoir of Nic Sheff, as soon as I finished that I rushed to get this. There is one more audio book that I have found but I definitely want more by this smart and sensitive author!!! The narration is just wonderful and even though I am 56, it seems like yesterday that I have been through such sadness. I just want to tell all young people that if you just hang in there, get help and put aside such unnecessary shame...I promise you will be happy. The road is long, but so worth it, it is so amazing to WANT to be alive!!!!
    Well-researched, Predictable, Solid Narration
The plot was interesting enough, albeit predictable. I felt that the author tried too hard to make the book relatable by dropping random curse words. as a person who curses a lot, you're doing it wrong..
On the plus side, Sheff did his homework on Schizophrenia (at least from what little I have read in the subject). He kept the internal struggle somewhat grounded rather than making Miles seem completely out there, like many people assume schizophrenics are. Even the triggers Miles experiences are true to the disease.
The narration was well-done. the voice is exactly how I expected the protagonist to sound. Good choice there!
    A good read
I really wish this book was longer! Other than that it's a interesting depiction of a disease that it's talked about very much.
    Predictable, but interesting
This is an interesting take on schizophrenia. The plot itself was predictable, but the narrator is good and fits the character. I enjoyed listening to it, though some may find the YA nature under stimulating. I wouldn't say this novel is profound, but I think the author writes a believable character that the reader or listener can relate to.

Mara wakes in a field of dead grass, a heavy mist pressing down on her. She is terrified, afraid that she is dead.
There is a boy in that mist, a beautiful young man dressed in black and able to move effortlessly through space and time. He is the Messenger of Fear.
The Messenger sees the darkness in human hearts. He sees the evils done: the destructive lies, the cruelty, the bullying, the violence. And if the world does not bring justice to those who do evil, the Messenger will. He offers the wicked a game. If they win, they go free. If they lose, they will live their greatest fear. Either way, their sanity will be challenged.
It is a world of fair but harsh justice. Of retribution and redemption. And mystery. Why was Mara chosen to be the Messenger's apprentice? What has she done to deserve this terrible fate? She won't find out until three of the wicked receive justice. And when she does, she will be shattered.
Told through compelling stories that are masterfully intertwined, Messenger of Fear is about the terrible choices that people make in life. Michael Grant, author of the New York Times best-selling Gone series, has created a powerful and brilliant narrative that examines the nature of good and evil in every human.

In case you're wondering, this is not a love story.
My name is Tori Spring. I like to sleep and I like to blog. Last year - before all that stuff with Charlie and before I had to face the harsh realities of A-Levels and university applications and the fact that one day I really will have to start talking to people - I had friends. Things were very different, I guess, but that's all over now.
Now there's Solitaire. And Michael Holden. I don't know what Solitaire are trying to do, and I don't care about Michael Holden. I really don't.
This incredible debut novel by outstanding young author Alice Oseman is perfect for fans of John Green, Rainbow Rowell and all unflinchingly honest writers.
    Critic Reviews:
"The most honest and authentic account of modern teenage life that you'll read this yearoutstanding contemporary fiction with appeal to fans of John Green." (The Bookseller)
    Members Reviews:
    Worth a listen
I did really enjoy it, i thought it was a really accurate portrayal of teenagers and was very relateable. The characters felt real and the dialogue was believable. Really enjoyed the wit, sarcasm and humor undermining the novel.
    Such a great book
Such a new story. I'm so bored and all this live stories about unlikely situations. I loved the voice of Tori it suits her so much.
    Different. More realistic. Not bad.
What did you like best about Solitaire? What did you like least?
I like the realism and the bitter honesty of the protagonist. Tori is one of those characters whom you either love or hate. She isn't a happy character. She spends time ranting and seeing no point in everything and in the world around her. She doesn't even like her friends or the school she goes to. She's very cynical and pessimistic about life. Although she may seem like an unlikeable character, I felt that her voice rings a familiar bell with many teenagers and young adults. I myself felt like I can relate to her thoughts and pessimism about the world. Reading/listening about her reminded me of my own time in secondary school - and this was something that I liked about this book.
The book may seem draggy at times in pacing as whole chapters go past with hardly anything happening or have anything significant to take note. Despite that, I didn't mind this feature at all. I felt that the pace captures what real life is like, being slow and uneventful. Although there is something of a plot in this book - the mystery of this Solitaire blog - it doesn't take central stage.
The cast of characters were interesting at most. I find Michael Holden quirky and likeable, and enjoyed his and Tori's interactions very much. I think their friendship is one of the highlights of this book.
If youve listened to books by Alice Oseman before, how does this one compare?
This is the first book I've read/listened from this author.
Have you listened to any of Holly Gibbss other performances? How does this one compare?
Again, this is the first time I've listened to this narrator. She did a pretty good narration capturing the bitterness and frustration in Tori's voice. The narrator doesn't distinguish her voice for different characters though, so it is more like she is reading the book aloud rather than performing it. However, I don't have much of an issue with that.

    Publisher's Summary:
From the New York Times best-selling author of The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane comes a chilling mystery - Prep meets The Crucible.
It's senior year at St. Joan's Academy, and school is a pressure cooker. College applications, the battle for valedictorian, deciphering boys' texts: Through it all, Colleen Rowley and her friends are expected to keep it together. Until they can't.
First it's the school's queen bee, Clara Rutherford, who suddenly falls into uncontrollable tics in the middle of class. Her mystery illness quickly spreads to her closest clique of friends, then more students and symptoms follow: Seizures, hair loss, violent coughing fits. St. Joan's buzzes with rumor; rumor blossoms into full-blown panic.
Soon the media descends on Danvers, Massachusetts, as everyone scrambles to find something, or someone, to blame. Pollution? Stress? Or are the girls faking? Only Colleen - who's been reading The Crucible for extra credit - comes to realize what nobody else has: Danvers was once Salem Village, where another group of girls suffered from a similarly bizarre epidemic three centuries ago.
Inspired by true events, from seventeenth-century colonial life to the halls of a modern-day high school, Conversion casts a spell. With her signature wit and passion, Katherine Howe delivers an exciting and suspenseful novel, a chilling mystery that raises the question, what's really happening to the girls at St. Joan's?
    Members Reviews:
good character wasted on mediocre story
What would have made Conversion better?
    Another ending.
Would you ever listen to anything by Katherine Howe again?
Maybe. But I read the summaries of her other book - once again about the Salem witches. Seems kinda repetative.
Have you listened to any of Khristine Hvams other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. But I liked her. Especially when she did Wheez's (the main character's baby sister) voice. It was adorable.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Conversion?
Anything that had to do with Emma. I really loathed her character. And everything that revolved around her.
And the last sentence of the book. That's just messing with the reader.
    Any additional comments?
I very much liked most of the book - the parts that were about modern times. but those interludes - they were boring! I almost audiably groaned, I think, every time when one of the started. It took self-control not to skroll past them.
Also, I think the media-obsession unfolded too quickly. I mean - a couple of girls fainted - and people are talking about an epidemic?! Come on!!
Should be called "Waiting For Something to Happen"
I read this book on a recommendation from a friend. She is a media specialist and hadn't read the book, but she said it seemed interesting to her. I started reading the hardcover and after initially putting it down, I picked up the audiobook a few months later. This book starts great and started with an interesting conflict right away. The performance of the main character Colleen is well done, and it makes her character relatable.
However, this book then changes perspective to a girl in Salem during the Salem Witch Trials. The speaker during these sections (which seemed to happen all too frequently) tried to have an accent, either British or early American. Either way, it was really obnoxious to listen to because it was so inconsistent.

    Riveting!
What made the experience of listening to Tamar the most enjoyable?
Great build of tension and the commitment of the narrators to build the characters and tense storyline. Its not just a good book - its a great AUDIBLE book, they bring it alive.
What other book might you compare Tamar to, and why?
Hard to say, part Sebastian Faulks, part C.J. Sansom. They both have aspects of tension, historical events, characters that struggle with the conflict between love and professional duty.
Which character as performed by Anton Lesser and Anna Maxwell Martin was your favourite?
Unfair question!! I adore listening to Anton Lesser, he draws the listener in and is completely believable in different characters, but Anna Maxwell Martin was wonderful as the young Tamar, you could really identify with her. A great combination.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Why have a movie when you've got the audible book and the images come alive in your mind??
    Any additional comments?
    I WANT MORE!!!
    Thoroughly enjoyable
Great narration and a strong plot. Moves at a steady pace with no bogging down
    Gripping Tale
If you could sum up Tamar in three words, what would they be?
    Espionage, passion, betrayal
What did you like best about this story?
The vivid descriptions of people, places and events.
What does Anton Lesser and Anna Maxwell Martin bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
The contrast between the action in 1945 and the events of 1985.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes, but I didn't!
    Any additional comments?
Highly recommended - not a dull moment. I was sorry that I got to the end!
    Superb
I've read the printed book several times and was not disappointed by the narration. Tamar is a stunning novel by an amazing author. Well researched, and utterly gripping each time I read or listen. Check out Mal's other novels too. He was a good friend and sadly missed.
    A Gripping Yarn!
This book had an amazing story of life inThe Netherlands a few months before the end of the Second World War, the Starvation Winter, when the Germans stopped food transportation into the west of the country. It told of the Dutch resistance and of two S.O.E. agents, parachuted in from Britain, their relationship with each other and with the people around them.
A parallel story line, taking place forty years later, of fifteen year-old Tamara's search to the the mystery of the contents of a shoebox left to her by her grandfather, has you wanting to keep listening and the ending ties the two together quite cleverly

At home, his dad works nights, and Finley is left to take care of his disabled grandfather alone. This book was given as a summer reading assignment for my child going into 9th grade. I got the Audio version so I could listen and be able to discuss the book with her. Not sure maybe if I felt like I cared more about Boy 21
Has Boy21 turned you off from other books in this genre?
Not at all I'm always open for anything that's good.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Ben Lukens?

But just when Alice's scores are settled, she goes into remission.
Now Alice is forced to face the consequences of all that she's said and done, as well as her true feelings for Harvey. But has she caused irreparable damage to the people around her - and to the one person who matters most?
Julie Murphy's Side Effects May Vary is a fearless and moving tour de force about love, life, and facing your own mortality.
    Members Reviews:
    Listening Experiences May Vary
Whats the Story? - Julie Murphys debut Side Effects May Vary is an unconventional cancer book, with an unpleasant protagonist. What happens when youre supposed to die, and you even complete your bucket list, but you beat the odds and survive? How do you live with the decisions you made when you thought you were dying?
Petulant Protagonist - Much of your reading experience will depend on how you react to Alice as a character. She is difficult to say the least. She uses her cancer bucket list as a way to exact revenge on her jerk of an ex (Luke) and her adversary (Celeste) that stole him. I dont mind flawed characters and I appreciate the unconventional approach Murphy takes with Alices character- she makes a cancer patient unsympathetic. But personally I thought Alices character made this book a chore to read at times.
Time (Clock of the Heart) Side Effects has a Now and Then device, that illustrates where we are now (cancer remission), and how we got there with then (living with cancer, bucket list). Time jumps between now and then, introducing pieces of the puzzle to put together throughout the book.
He Said, She Said - In addition to the now and then story structure, Side Effects features dual perspective, with Alice and Harvey (her long-suffering friend/love interest) taking alternate chapters. This was a good choice for this book. Alice and Harvey dont have the best communication so being in their heads allow us to see where theyre coming from.
Love Story - Alice and Harvey grew up together since their parents are best friends. Harvey loves Alice and she strings him along for much of the book. They are not best friends or boyfriend-girlfriend, but something undefinable that makes for a messy, misunderstood relationship. I cant say I shipped this pairing and I wanted so much more for good guy Harvey.
Mean Girls - This is probably the first revenge/cancer book Ive read, and the pranks in this book take a page right out of Carrie.
Ballerina out of Control - Another activity that links Alice and Harvey is ballet. Harveys mom runs a dance studio, where Alice danced and Harvey played piano. Alice is a gifted dancer, but isnt sure if she wants to stick with it. Now that shes well, can she find her way back to the studio?
Reach for the Stars Alice and Harvey have some growing to do in this book.

    fantastic
fantastic sequel. highly recommend. great story and ending. wish she'd do another set like this.
    Awesome!
I was looking for a new author and literally stumbled onto Megan Miranda. She captured me in the first paragraph. I am over 50, and it was a great trip for me to be able to experience young adult relationships. So many lessons the group had to learn. wow!
I am recommending this author to all my friends. thanks for the experience.
    Great book!
    Also love the narrator!
Great sequel and book! Wish the series was longer. I will miss the characters and all
    Painful to listen to
This book may appeal to a young teen, but I doubt it. Very very boring, no story line. I listened to half of the first book and gave it up. The more I listened the more frustrated I was getting with the story. I even fast forwarded through a lot of it to see if it picked up but it just stayed boring and repetitive. Hopefully it picked up in the second book but I could not stand it long enough to get there. Actually the narrator did an okay job but he had a really crummy story to work with.
    A disappointing read
Decided to try this author and I must say, it was definitely a waste of time. The blurb made it sound really mysterious and interesting, but reads more like an angry teen rant. It isn't completely irredeemable, but I just can't bring myself to finish the book.
Performance was good, but the storyline wasn't much to work with.
Would probably appeal to goth teens with latent anger issues.
