She's named after a motorcycle. Her dad's an Elvis impersonator. Her mom talks to spirit guides....
Someone's kidnapped the family dog - named King, in Elvis' honor. There's a ransom note....
And then things really get weird.
Memphis tour guide Harley Jean Davidson is about to enjoy a rare day off when her parents call with news that King, their border collie, has been dognapped. Harley Jean's mom insists the culprit is Bruno Jett, their next door neighbor. Harley Jean would rather run over her own foot with a motorcycle than talk to him. He's drop-dead gorgeous - with a dangerous attitude she'd like to avoid.
But King has to be rescued, so she sets off to find him. Harley Jean gets more than she bargains for when she finds a body, as well. Bruno Jett is definitely involved, but how?
The Memphis P.D. wants to pin the murder on Harley Jean's dad. Now it's up to her to clear his name...and avoid becoming the killer's next victim.
Virginia Brown is the author of more than 50 novels, including the bestselling Dixie Diva mystery series.

    Revving up with Harley
    Hound dog Blues
Who but a hippy, bike lovin' Elvis fan would name his girl child Harley Jean Davidson?
Well, that would be daddy, Yogi, now Yogi also has a dog, King, he loves this dog and feels a great spiritual attachment to him. The dog doesn't care much about all that stuff, as time after time he gets loose and causes chaos in the neighbourhood.
Harley, now a tour guide, gets the call. Find King. A simple enough request you may think, but wait! There's more ....... King hasn't simply gone missing, he has been dog napped! There's even a ransom note, very odd, thinks Harley, as everyone know Yogi and Diva barely make a living selling hippy stuff.
Harley immediately has a suspect in mind, Mrs. Trimble. King had taken to visiting her in the past, and they had developed a very unfortunate relationship. Mrs. Trimble also had no love for Yogi either, and so begins Harleys' outrageous adventure!
There is a body, there are missing jewels, and there is a missing Yogi and Diva who have now become prime suspects in a dreadful crime. It's all left to Harley to put right.
Meanwhile she gets her fashion advice from her coworker Tootsie, who also works part time as a drag artist, he knows everything a girl would want to know about hair and make up. She annoys the heck out of certain officers of the law, takes advantage of friends' homes ... and eats a lot of bean burritos.
This story takes the reader on a rollicking adventure with Harley, naturally, she solves the mysteries providing us with plenty of fun along the way. I enjoyed the characters and I'm hoping to get to know them better. I also enjoyed my visit to Memphis.
    Narrator
I must admit, I was a bit concerned, as this book has both a male and female narrators, Karen Commins and Drew Commins. Following a few less than satisfactory experiences I wouldn't normally choose to listen to a book with more than one narrator, I knew Karen would be good, she's always good, but what about this Drew fella? Well, actually he too is very good, excellent distinct characterisation, no overacting, good timing, pleasant listening.
However, there is a big difference in the listening experience when there is more than one narrator, and I'm still not sure I care for it.

A perfect book for a long drive
This audiobook was given to me as a gift, the first I've read by Aaron Paul Lazar. I found Gus LeGarde an enjoyable companion on an interstate drive. The plot was involving but not so edge-of-seat as to make me a menace on the highway - a perfect drive-time book. Some people might object to the lengthy breaks between action sequences and concrete plot developments, but they can write their own reviews! IMO, the pace suited Gus's character and gave Lazar time to paint wonderfully sense-appealing details about the setting and to develop the romantic element.
I docked Robert King Ross a star because he often crooned the ends of words to no purpose and because his pronunciation of some words was distractingly incorrect, especially Siegfried's German comments. (I'm not expecting a perfect accent, just correct basics.) Otherwise, the performance was very good.
I definitely will read more by this author. (In fact, I already did - I liked Tremolo even better!)
I'm no critic, but I really enjoyed this one.
Where does Double Forté rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Top 5
What other book might you compare Double Forté to and why?
I'm not an avid bookie and this is really my first foray into mystery stories... so not much to compare with for me. If you have a mystery book that weaves multiple plot threads with a wonderful sense of place and the everyday joys and not so everyday tragedies of life... You would be getting close on this one.
    Which scene was your favorite?
There is genuine tension in several scenes, but especially when The professor is snooping where he probably shouldn't... And you sense the moral dilemma and character traits under making his decisions. There is also genuine joy at points. There are times you can't believe one guy can have such bad luck, patience and good fortune, all at the same time.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I had several verbal moments while listening... A few chuckles and a "good grief", or two.
    Any additional comments?
Mr. lazar writes about an area of the country I am familiar with.

Benni Harper, a curator of the local folk art museum and amateur detective, is the star of this best-selling Agatha Award-winning series. Her talent for finding trouble surfaces in an unlikely place - her own church. While helping her grandmother direct the childrens musical, Benni finds the beaten body of the church handyman. Soon, other mysteries compel her to investigate, despite the warnings from her husband Gabe, the chief of police.
    Members Reviews:
Deeper issues & a harrowing finale
This series has always had references to Benni's deep faith but this novel delves into that faith more than previous books in the series. Dove is asked to take over directing a children's play of "Pilgrim's Progress" for her church and ropes Benni into helping. During rehearsals she finds the dead body of the church's handyman and discovers that a young immigrant girl is the only witness. She probes into the death and becomes involved in the issue of churches harboring illegal immigrants. She also comes face-to-face with her own mortality in a deeper way than previous books and learns about other's free will to choose and how we may not have forever to show those we love how much they mean to us. One of the fun things of reading a series through is seeing the author develop her writing style and also watching the characters learn and grow. The first couple novels had Benni getting banged up and scared but this one was a much more mature scenario with deeper currents that tested her faith. This was my favorite so far in a series that gets better with each novel. They could be read as stand-alones, but there's so much back-story to the characters and since these books are fundamentally about relationships, they need to be read in order to get all the meanings.
wish i could write one review for the entire series
THat is not to say there are no differences. The plots are very different, but consistensy in character of all the repeat persons is appreciated. This series is relaxing, easy to read, and comforting. Not that the characters do not have their share of personal problems. It is the way these problems are willingly worked out for the better that is so reassuring. True in this whole series. DKW
    I really love this series
I had begun reading this series years ago, but recently re-read the old ones and purchased all the ones I did not already own. I am not a quilter, but I do enjoy hearing about the quilts and other activities going on in Benni's work and home life. Would be a cute tv series to be honest. A cozy read, yet keeps you wondering and turning the pages.
I really did like all the Benni Harper series by Erlene Fowler
I really did like all the Benni Harper series by Erlene Fowler. I read all 15 books. I will try thenext series she wrote after finishing the Ivy Malone series. Both these series got into the meat of the story fast and held my interest !!! Betty Roberts reader

Beautifully crafted suspense mingled with poetry
Would you listen to Dark Hollow again? Why?
For the complexity of the story, which is multi-layered, for the superb reading by Jeff Harding who brings such colour to each scene and every personality.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dark Hollow?
From the beginning to the last word.
Have you listened to any of Jeff Hardings other performances? How does this one compare?
Jeff Harding is the master of readers...incomparable delivery. I often choose a book because I know the quality of his delivery.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
For adults with poetry and danger in their souls.
    Lost My Way!
I lost my way very early in this story. The author's constant side-tracking into lengthy explanations of each mood and gesture of the protagonist, his minutely detailed descriptions of the looks and dress of each character as they appear, the landscape, the weather, etc. and I totally lost any thread of plot I might have previously picked up. I kept coming back to the Publisher's Summary on this site to remind myself what I was supposed to be listening to! I did plough on but it got no better and I can't, in all honesty, tell you what it was about.
I do, however, enjoy hearing the voice of Jeff Harding, whatever he reads, and I know that's what kept me going to the end - whatever it was.
    Great story telling
I enjoyed this book and thought that the story was great. The narration too was very good, although I felt during the first 3 quarters of the book the narrator's "normal" story telling voice was a bit monotone and lacked feeling. This changed later as he seemed to get more into the story himself. However, throughout the book his voices and accents were excellent, especially those of Angel and Louis.
Great complex plot and brilliant turns of phrase
The story weaves though complicated intersecting plots. But it is the writing and original turns of phrase which bring smiles in the dark doings as Bird tries to find a kidnapped girl among a growing pile of corpses.
    brilliant
I loved this book so much
brilliantly written and Charle Parker is great character
    very addictive series

    Publisher's Summary:
When P.I. Jade de Jong invites Superintendent David Patel on a scuba diving holiday in St. Lucia, she hopes the time away will rebuild their conflicted relationship. Jade's dreams are soon shattered when David calls off their affair, forcing her into the arms of environmentalist Craig Niewoudt. But the next morning, romantic issues are put aside when a scuba diving instructor, Amanda Bolton, is found brutally stabbed to death.
Amanda is a most unlikely candidate for murder - a quiet and intelligent woman who until a few months ago pursued a high-powered career as an air traffic controller. She had few acquaintances and no lovers. The only loose end is a postcard in her room from Jo'burg-based Themba Msamaya, asking how she is doing "after 813 and The Fallen." Jade and David put their differences aside and start the deadly hunt.

    Crime mixed with failed romance
I found the plot of THE FALLEN uneven, slow to get going really as several threads of unequal interest were set up, including a somewhat confusing tale about Jade trying to find the grave of her mother who died when Jade was a baby. For me the pacing was thrown off by the terribly obvious and drawn out clue-hunting, and then at one point I thought the book had finished and was rather astonished to find there were still 6 and a half chapters (a couple of hours) of the audio book left . The thread that deals with what happens after the diving instructors body is found and the truly horrible plan Jade uncovers was for me the best part of the book; responsible for a genuine OMG moment when it became clear what was going on.
In the end it felt like the book didn't quite know what it wanted to be.A major thread dealing with jade's on/off romance with a married bloke took the book in a romantic direction that didn't interest me at all. At times it read like an old-fashioned whodunnit, though with De Jong making a bit of a fist of the kind of denouement that Holmes or Poirot could perform with aplomb. I cannot possibly, for example, be the only reader to have been internally screaming there are more than passengers on an airplane you dolt as Jade very slowly worked this out as if for an audience of dim-witted third graders. At other times the book read like a modern thriller with loads of action and heroine-in-peril scenarios. Personally I think this aspect of the book worked better, especially as it allowed the author to depict several aspects of modern South African life which was a real strength of the novel.

Would a man really use his dying breath to play Russian roulette with his soul? If what Fred Howerd revealed under the seal of confession is true, then a grave miscarriage of justice has been allowed to lie festering for over 20 years - and that, for the Whitebridge police, is political dynamite. DCI Monika Paniatowski argues with the Chief Constable that it will be almost impossible to solve a case which is almost history.
But the real reason for her reluctance to take it on is more to do with her own past than with Howerds - because if she does solve it, there is a strong chance she will destroy the man who has been almost a father to her.

    Try This Author
Sally Spencer (really a man) is a British author relatively unknown in America, but he has written a lot of books, most of which are good. Many are "free" with Kindle Unlimited, including the audio version.Quite a lot of bargains and I have read all those. Some are better than others, but for "free" how can you lose?
    Five Stars
    Great read!
    Four Stars
Love Sally Spencer. Aways a good read
Author made a huge mistake when Monika explained how the murder of Lily was supposed to have occurred
I was enjoying this book very much until the very end when DCI Monika was explaining the solution to the murders. First, she said that the murderer was out of town, so someone else took Lilly instead. But due to some physical deformity, this person couldn't have strangled her. Then all of sudden the murderer is there, strangling Lilly at the allotment, helping the person who took her in the first place. I thought the murderer was supposed to be OUT OF TOWN! How could he instantly appear at the allotment? This was at 96% in the Kindle edition on my reader. I had to re-read the page several times to make sure. I'm disappointed in the author and his editors for not catching that huge mistake! It spoiled the whole book for me and now I'm probably not going to read any more in the series, if the other books are as sloppy as this one.
    Echoes
ECHOES OF THE DEAD is another novel in Sally Spencer's police procedural series featuring Deputy Chief Inspector Monica Paniatowski. The series is set in England in the seventies and is actually a continuation of the Charlie Woodend series. Woodend has retired and is spending his time in Spain while he has been replaced on the force by Paniatowski, his former protégé.
The "Echoes" in the title refer to the echoes of the past. This one involves a murder, actually two murders, that took place over twenty years before. The novel opens with a convicted murderer, Fred Howerd, who is at death's door. He confesses to a priest that he lied when he confessed to murder years ago. He did not kill the child Lilly Dawson in 1951. The priest goes to the police insisting that an innocent man had been framed. Monica Paniatowski is assigned to investigate. She is chosen because the investigator who originally handled the case was her former boss Charlie Woodend. To save him from the scandal of having framed an innocent man, she plunges into the case.
Ms. Spencer does a terrific job with her procedurals. I like the setting and am easily transported to Whitebridge in the seventies. All the investigators enjoy hanging out in pubs after hours to discuss the case over a few pints.

Series hits its stride in book 2. Less need for introductions as we already know the characters. More plot driven and less 'I did it to be a girl detective'. The character arcs are quite engrossing and the plot keeps you reading on.

She goes to her brother's home hoping to mend fences with him after being out of each others' lives for years. What she finds is a dead body. Members Reviews:
    Highly recommended
Whilst the story is fictional it is cleverly based on a series of actual events which occurred during the early years of WW2. An arrangement between Yale and Oxford University meant that wives and children of the privileged classes were shipped to America for their protection when it was thought that Germany might invade England and America had not yet committed to helping the allies. Dr James Zennor arrives home early one morning to find his wife and child have disappeared and so begins the trail of intrigue. I found the characters interesting, the book extremely well written, well read by Julian Rhind Tutt and without giving anything away, I found the conclusion to be well crafted and satisfying. Will be dipping into another Sam Bourne book quite soon.
    A thriller that gathers pace
This is the first book I've encountered by the author and will certainly be seeking out more. The story starts slowly as one gets to know the characters. I needed to concentrate as the early chapters switch back and forth between the Spanish Civil War and the early years of the Second World War to establish the back story of the main character Dr Zenna. As the story unfolds it becomes an extraordinary thriller that reminded me of Robert Goddard's books where a man is pitted against unknown malign forces in his search for the truth. The book really gathers pace once Dr Zenna begins his quest to find his wife who has mysteriously disappeared. I couldn't stop listening as I was eager to find out what would happen next.
I was fascinated to learn that the background to the story is based on facts that emerged after the War and the author has cleverly woven in a fictitious story to fit in with the facts.
    The narrator is very good.
A war story with a difference
A different perspective from which to view the events leading up to WW2. The human interest storyline complemented the factual background. Much food for thought. The narrator was fantastic on accents - the best I have heard, you would think it was a different reader for each of the male voices.
Gripping, with a good sense of time and place.
An interesting thriller, thankfully without car chases, shoot-outs etc, that kept me gripped.

    Hostage Heroines
This has been made into a film with James Garner, don't let that put you off it!!!
A busload of deaf girls are taken hostage by three escaped criminals. The FBI are brought in to negotiate their release, but the leader of the gang doesn't follow the usual protocols.
This is a great listen, as it is really tense and Jeff Harding always does fab readthroughs.
A good story, but very long-winded.
The concept is excellent and the storyline good, but I struggled to finish this book as it laboured its way to a predictable end.
    loved it
the twists and turns were great. was glad when I could find time to get back to my book.

PI Lena Jones learns that old sins never die; theyre still taking lives.
When Lena's partner, Pima Indian Jimmy Sisiwan, is arrested in the remote town of Walapai Flats in northern Arizona, Lena closes the Desert Investigations office and rushes to his aid. What she finds is a town up in arms over a new uranium mine located only 10 miles from the magnificent Grand Canyon. Jimmys sister-in-law, founder of Victims of Uranium Mining, has been murdered, but the opposing side has taken hits, too. Ike Donohue, the mines public relations man, is found shot to death, which casts suspicion on Jimmy and his entire family.
During her investigation, Lena finds not only a community decimated by dangerous mining practices but also a connection to actor John Wayne and the mysterious deaths resulting from the 1953 filming of The Conqueror. Gabe Boone, a wrangler on that doomed film, is still alive, but the only person the aged man will confide in is John Waynes ghost. Its up to Lena to penetrate Gabes defenses and uncover the decades-old tragedy that no one in Walapai Flats wants to talk about. By delving into the areas history, Lena discovers the reason that high-ranking government officials want those crimes to remain under wraps.
Desert Wind, like the others in Betty Webbs Lena Jones mystery series, is based on the facts of true-crime cases.
