I'd need to know that I wasn't going to be ambushed by a twist in the plot that described such horrible animal abuse as was in this book.

I would cut the entire part about the dog abuse. When I first discovered J. R. Rain's books I read everything here on Audible as quickly as I could. I loved them. Then when Hail Mary came out I bought it and started listening to it. I was so upset by the portrayal of dog abuse that I could not listen to any more of it. I am an animal lover and am very concerned with their protection. But, when I listen to books it is for enjoyment. I am disappointed in Mr. Rain for this book. I don't know if I can trust him so I could read any more of his books.

Thank you to the other reviewers for the warning. I enjoyed the easy reading of the first two books. This one I could not finish due to the subject matter. I work in Huntington Beach, frequent the dog beach, and love animals. I made it to chapter 18 and had to stop reading. The subject matter about the animals bothered me too much to continue. Therefore, out of fairness to the author, I rated the book as I did with the two prior in the series. I wanted to only rate the reader, but I was not allowed to do so.

Thoroughly enjoyable listen!

A light-hearted murder, a unique character, refreshing family dynamics and an enjoyable listen!

Wendy Roberts has written a fun book, --even the heartbreaking reality of a mentally ill parent is written with true compassion and humor. I have a schizophrenic sibling --she is hopefully now past the 'episodes' but we keep our fingers crossed. She is on her own, she is an adult, we can do very little for her, but love her. She has given us alternating periods of humor, terror and grief but if you can't laugh at the insanity of it all (pun intended) -the grief will damage your soul. Wendy Roberts gets it and writes it very well.

Also, the complexities of contemporary relationships are written in a refreshing, smart-ass style. The heroine knows she can't save her father but she can give him a cup of hot coffee; she knows she can't change her boyfriend but she can still maintain a guarded friendship after he betrays her.

This book goes in my 'waiting room playlist' A book I can pick up and put down in the dentist's waiting room or at the evil in-laws... a wonderful, amusing diversion from life's sucky realities.

Probably one of the New Adult stories

The behavior of the protagonist was just too childish for words. She carries dog poop up to a neighbor's apartment because she's mad at her. Yep, that was about the end for me. She may mature, she may not, but I've already done it once and don't want to watch her try. Not that it may not be someone else's cup of tea. I confess to wondering what the missing dog and the palm itchiness is all about, which is why I bought the book. Do not care to wade through the rest. I'll wait til someone else reads it and get see if s/he will tell me.

How Can I Get a Job Narrating Books?

The narrators nose sounded stuffed up... or maybe like her mouth was full...I don't know but it wasn't the clear, crisp narration I usually hear with audio books.

Difficult to listen too....

No, the narration is poor. Between the speed of the talking and lack of tonal change between characters I found it very difficult to follow. Tried to finish this book several times but I just can't get through it.

Slower narration.

Fun mystery, poor editing

A very enjoyable cozy mystery involving a tiny woman who keeps facing disrespect at work. Despite that, she manages to solve the mystery, save the day, and get the guy. My kind of woman! I love the humor as well! A scene involving a loud hand-held alarm had me laughing out loud within minutes of starting!

My only gripe is the poor editing. There were a lot of mispronunciations, and they were jarring to me (mispronunciations are a pet peeve of mine). Some examples: Quarry-quaary, proscribed-prescribed, defecators-defectors, commandeered-commandeered.

Enjoyable cozy

Light hearted fun mystery, those are the words I would use to describe this book.

Nice mystery somewhat marred by mispronounciation

The story was cute, although I was sorry for the dog for being hauled around and tied up a lot.

The narrator, however, needs a course on pronouncing some words...like specious, opulence, and commandeering to name three.

The ending is worth waiting for. the book can feel a little dragged out, but in the end lots of what seemed pointless descriptions and information adds up to a great story.

Tedious and dull

The main character is struggling with anorexia (not a spoiler alert...it's obvious from the first chapter). There are very, very long descriptions of meals and what she isn't eating, and so forth.

The plot is complex but seems a backdrop to the character's obsession with food (or not food). I kept skipping forward but then I'd lose the latest small step in the plot.

Very long book--couldn't stay interested.

slow beginning but grew to enjoy it the more i listened. if it was in a book form i would of stopped a few chapters in but as it was an audio i kept on listening and grew to love the characters.

THE READING WAS EXCELLENT...

...but the story was a bit lacking. I would have liked having more possible suspects and a few side stories about other clients to fill it out. The characters were believable, although the foul language of some did nothing to enhance them. I almost stopped listening because of it. I did appreciate that the writer didn't feel obligated to include sex scenes in the book.

Keeps you guessing

A very good book. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good "who done it " .

Onto book 3!

I love these books! Great story line and attention to detail! The humour and sarcasm.. I love it all.

Very different from the first book

This book feels like a complete 180 from the first book in the series. Even though it feels different the characters remain the same and still fit with the universe created in the first book.

The storyline content is not as dark as the first book and it seems to have a little lighter feel to the last book and moves at a much faster pace. The book does have several sub-plots which can be a little distracting from the overall case but the book in general is great addition to the series.

One of my favorite parts of the book is the carry over storylines from the first book which help keep you entrenched in the Knighthorse world while the new case is so different and unique. The book also sets up some future storylines and has some great twists in it. Overall a great book.

Love This Series

The only bad thing about this series is there will be no more. I believe this was one of Amazon's recommendations for me based on the fact that I was reading the Peter Shandy series. Thank you Amazon. These people are out of their collective minds. The humor is just endearing and laugh out loud funny. I am not a fan of books with talking ghosts - okay, I have all three of Molly MacCrae's books - never mind. I purchased this book because I so enjoyed the others and was not disappointed. I even liked the ghost and the mystery was very good as usual. The ghost is looking for his bones - I know, I know - as well as a treasure cache he buried somewhere. I'd explain why he can't find these things but I don't remember exactly what he said. Buy the book, forsooth:)

Charlotte MacLeod must have been a hoot to know.

A last visit to Lobelia Falls, Ontario

Great for anyone who wants to go back to the charming and quirky town of Lobelia Falls and visit with Dittany and Osbert and the rest of the gang.

Widowed health-nut Zilla Trott is surprised to find the ghost of a murdered muleteer haunting her kitchen, getting into her dandelion wine and asking her help in locating the trunk full of gold coins he buried just before his untimely demise.

She calls upon her neighbors and friends in the Grub and Stakers Gardening and Archery Club, and soon all sorts of long-buried things are being dug up--a trunk full of stolen cash, a missing set of bridal china, and the mule-skinner's long-lost bones. Along the way, other mysteries pop up and are serendipitously solved: A bank heist, an abduction, and the case of the killer cow.

The goofy goings-on also dredge up references to the town's past exploits in this, the final novel in the series. All's well that ends well, of course, and this story ends with the town's elderly residents getting a new senior center, and Zilla getting another visit from Hiram the ghost. She's grown accustomed to his ectoplasm, and the ending of the book promises the beginning of a beautiful (if unusual) friendship.

Not her best.

I enjoyed Charlotte MacLeod's style and her likeable stock of characters, but in my opinion this isn't one of her better efforts. Someone else may have enjoyed it more than I did, however. I would still recommend it if you like her style and just want a quick, light read for an evening at home.

Good Story

The oddity of the characters is a bit forced and tiresome at times. but they are interesting nonetheless. The story is not meant to be believable; it is meant to be entertaining, which it is. I would like to read more of this author's work.

just finished really enjoy the series

American Indian Vampire - Yes, the best.

This new approach to an American indian vampire has become my favorite. Great story as always by Thurlo with a superb twist. And being from New Mexico, I love the setting.

Really slow

This book is so slow I gave up.

Who would have thought a vampire Navajo cop novel could be so deadly dull. If I'd had to read one more paragraph about mesquite, huisache and arroyos I would have screamed. Instead I just sent the book to cloud and have no intention of getting it back.

I would have accorded this book no stars but that option wasn't available.

Lee Nez is back again.

Different and interesting Navajo story.I recommend it.

Almost very good

Ms Barnes is a good writer. Her Carlotta Carlyle is a good fictional character. This, like all the books in the series Iâve read before, is an enjoyable read. None of them has risen from good to great, or even very good. But I come back to them from time to time because I know Iâll like, if not love, any of Barnesâ Carlotta stories. I canât write a rave review or sprinkle the book with all five stars. But Carlotta has become a familiar friend, and Iâll be back.

More great writing from Linda Barnes in the Carlotta Carlyle mystery series.

The Carlotta Carlyle mystery series is a real winner. Interesting to learn the ins and outs of the taxi business and police department. But the best part is the insightful writing and dialog. You would do well to read the entire series.

Page turner strong female

This is the first time I read one of these mysteries and I will be purchasing another one. I love Boston. I love the tough female detective and all of the funky friends around her. I also love the cranky characters supporting her too, like her ex boss.

Carlotta wins through again

Linda Barnes keeps close to the character's foibles, personal world and social scene developed in the earlier novels in the series. However she manages to keep a fresh approach as well. I enjoyed reading this novel and recommend it to others who like Detective murder mysteries.

Yes, I would recommend it. It is interesting story! A little bit slow at the beginning, but after an hour it had my full attention.
