Terrible narration

What disappointed you about Vital Lies?

I bought the book because the reader reviews were good, but the narration makes the story unbearable. She narrates the way most of us read aloud.

How could the performance have been better?

Captivating yet comfortable

I absolutely love the Jane Lawless series. I feel like I know the main characters. Iron Girl is good read. It's captivating yet comfortable. I love trying to figure out the antagonist yet it always eludes me till the end. I've got 4 more Ellen Hart mysteries ordered and as long as whe writes them I will read them.

Another good Jane Lawless.

This was and enjoyable read, another good Jane lawless mystery. You can see how Jane has matured over the series.

Not what it used to be.

I've always been a great fun of Ellen Hart. All of her earlier books were page turners and trully funny. The last books of the Jane Lowless series (like "The Iron Girl") seem to be a stretch and even Cordelia isn't funny any more.

The past comes back to haunt Jane Lawless

After years of mourning, Minneapolis restaurateur and amateur sleuth Jane Lawless is finally starting to come out of the funk she fell into following the tragic death of her partner Christine Kane. Having found new hope from her long distance relationship with Kenzie Mullroy, she tackles the sad task of going through the boxes of Christine's personal items that she had stored away. Much to her dismay, she discovers a gun amidst Christine's keepsakes which had been deemed a key piece of evidence in a notorious murder trial some eighteen years before. Desperate to know what Christine's involvement in that case was, she undertakes a private investigation into a sensational triple murder which has generated controversy locally and nationally for nearly two decades.

Although this was my first Jane Lawless book (The Iron Girl is the thirteenth book in the series which began in 1989 with Hallowed Murder), I felt as if I had been reading about her for ages. Falling under Hart's spell within a few pages, I took an immediate interest in Jane and her extended family, and in the small corner of Minnesota where The Iron Girl is set. Hart lays her cards on the table with great patience, stringing her readers along with an intoxicating mixture of danger, humor and romance, keeping them riveted until she can deliver her jolting and satisfying conclusion. They say you'll always remember your first, and that's definitely true for me in the case of Jane Lawless, Ellen Hart and The Iron Girl.

This is Ellen Hart's Best Yet!

There is no doubt that we are blessed with many talented mystery writers. There are, however, only a handful of books each year that are exceptional. Ellen Hart's The Iron Girl is one of those.

Why Do These People Care So Much About Food?

The author has apparently created a new genre of Scandinavian crime fiction called Elegant Crime. It supposedly is a combination of chic lit and mystery called Elegant Crime. Half of the characters are upper income types, half are not. But they are all brought together by one obsession-- food. At first I thought it was just local color, a chance to read about snacking life in Stockholm, then it began to intrude into the story-- big plates of food. And it became clear that the good guys in the social sense (not in the criminal sense) give and share food, the disagreeable character reject the offer of food. Many cups of coffee and cinnamon buns are consumed.

Mystery? Oh, there was a mystery in there? Yes, there was. A young girl is found dead under and upturned boat and a man is run over in the street. There seems to be some connection to a lifestyle cult but that's not important. Instead let me tell you about some delectable white chocolates that the heroine consumed before having sex with an old friend.

No, I don't think I would read another book by this author. I'm not sure why the obsession with food but it sure wasn't interesting.

Interesting plot--great characters

I liked this book, although at first, I thought it a bit slow. But, the pace of Scandinavian noir is always a bit slow with LOTS of detailed descriptions of place & people. Although I did see 'who done it', I still stuck with the book because the characters are very interesting. I think the author can take this book and make a series out of it. There is some room for the characters to change and grow. I especially liked the female characters--not "all tough as nails unbelievable" OR 'too delicate to breath' like some American authors portray female police & prosecutors. Instead there is vulnerability and growth in a believable way.

Good Murder Mystery @ $7.34 Great Buy!

I had a good time listening to this book. It was a combination of a mystery that was well constructed, with focus on two apparently unrelated female characters and a male detective, with glimpses into their personal lives. I didn't figure out whodunit until fairly close to the end, and it kept my interest throughout.

Always nice to listen to a book after reading it.

I read the series years ago. I liked them then and was excited to listen to them. I always like a book where I learn something. The world of book publishing was something I knew nothing about. The books are adventures wrapped around little known historical events. That made them fun to read. And, that made up for any structural or story issues.

Pretty good, but gets tedious in places

I took a chance on getting this (first book) in a series, after having previously read a later one out of order, and thinking maybe I found it kind of lackluster was because I didn't have the background the first books would have provided. So it turns out that that was sort of correct--I liked this one considerably better than the other one, but it still had a quality of seeming like an over-long listen.

Alex Plumtree is desperate to keep his publishing house going, and is depending upon a mystery writer whom he knows as "Arthur" to provide him with the remainder of a best selling novel about kidnapped children. Except there is beginning to be suspicion that this might not be fictional, but true. Furthermore, where is Arthur? He, and the missing end of the manuscript have disappeared. So it is a really good setup for a book. Dangerous things begin to occur and Alex is beginning to wonder who is trustworthy?

I think two things kept this book from being more interesting (to me). For one thing, it seemed longer than necessary, but more importantly, I didn't feel as if the characters (however well drawn they were) were that interesting (some more than others). The other concern was that Alex is portrayed as a rather young man, someone who is physically fit and has love interest, but my ears heard the narration making him sound more like an older man in the part, which left a disconnect in my listening experience somehow. But that is only my own opinion, others may not hear it that way. The premise of the book is interesting, and it has lots of places that are interesting, but it just seemed to be a little too stretched out somehow. Could have used a bit more editing. Better than I had expected, less engaging than I had hoped for. And I did like it better than the other one in the series I read previously.

Vastly enjoyable read.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries with a twist, you will love this book. I cannot wait for the next one. For me, this book has it all. The slightly exotic locale, the intimate look at lives interwoven, a main character that intrigues the reader, and, to top it off, it's well-written.

A delicious mix of modern Greece is layered upon old Greece, with an unexpected whiff of ancient Greece. The "fat man" investigator Hermes is a mystery of his own. Does he have a touch of the supernatural? Although the author never says it, if the ancient God Hermes still walked the earth and took interest in the affairs of men, he might act just this way.

The characters are well drawn and, better yet, have hearts and morals and passions that are revealed with a delicate and respectful touch. The sights and sounds and flavors of Greece aren't backdrops to the story but essential ingredients. Skillful writing with style applied lightly, the way a good perfume should be applied.

If you like Charles Finch's Lenox mysteries (A Blue Death), or Laura Joh Rowland's Sanjuro stories (The Ronan's Mistress), you will definitely want to try this book.

Detection or Fate

The Greek detective knows not only the most delicious and traditional wines and food, but he knows how to psychologically address human vices. Most of the villains are given justice, not from the law but rather the Fates working on their natural flaws. The depictions of Grrek life are vivid. There's a great deal of irony in all that happens. A minor detail involves a fisherman who is given the opportunity to farm; even with the perks could a true lover of his boat, solitude, and fishing be happy on land?

The Fat Man Trilogies

I have read 3 of Zouroudi's novels with the fat man as the main character. Had accidently discovered the first hardback in a dollar store. AZ keeps your interest with her detailed depscriptions of the Greek islands and the everyday, and intriguing, lives of ordinary people.

I have never made the trip to Greece (that my husband promised 40 years ago), so all of her plots are kind of a trip for me.

Well written and anchored in real world corruption

I like this the best of these Greek mysteries. The writing is clear and the characters are well drawn. Having spent some time in a society as corrupt as the one she describes, I see that she "got it." I really cared about these people and felt I had gotten into their world.

Unstatisfying Conclusion to Story- Third in Series

I had never heard of "International Bestseller" Casey Hill so first I googled the author which wasn't a lot of help, then I had the brilliant idea of looking on the Amazon UK site. So here's the lowdown. Casey Hill is a husband and wife writing team Melissa Hill (who writes chick lit or modern romance according to which source I read) and her husband Kevin Hill. They live in Ireland and Melissa is Irish. There's nothing really about Kevin so I assume he isn't a California surfer dude or the publicity inform would have mentioned it

Anyway, this is the third book in the series. The first two are available on Audible in the UK but not here. Don't know whose decision that was but I probably would not have made it to the 3rd one if I had listened to (or read) the first one. Also I apologize for the review being so long. You can skip to the last paragraph for the take-away. Most of this is just complaining.

Let me though say I have no problem with the narration. Carolyn Lennon has a pleasant and agreeable voice and style I would be happy to listen to again.

Background. Reilly Steel, a California born, surfing, forensic scientist who ended up in Ireland because her disabled Irish born, recovering alcoholic firefighter dad, Mike Steel, returned to Ireland where his meager California firefighter's disability pension is eked out by Irish welfare. Wow, Irish welfare must be very generous considering the average California disability pension for firemen. Are you sensing a certain amount of stereotyping here? I can promise you that the character development (which done well can overcome stereotypes) doesn't help here.

A victim of a hit and run driver is found dead on a narrow Irish road. She is wearing a thin gown, no shoes and has wings tattooed on her back. No one claims the body so the first job is to identify the victim.

The cops in this case take Reilly along on investigation forays, but that's ok because she is also a FBI trained hostage negotiator. One of the two main investigators had a wife who may (or may not have cancer), the other, Chris, has a genetic disease that usually isn't serious but Reilly is upset with him because he hasn't told his superiors about it. -Chris and Reilly have an on and off friendship tending toward romantic relationship. And none of this is really interesting.

Also there is a red herring in the form of another character who appears and becomes a hook for the next book in the series. But by using this the way the authors do it robs this book of a satisfying ending. The solve the mystery which isn't much a mystery. There isn't even a whole lot of a crime when all is revealed, at least not in this book.

I highly recommend this series. Gives an authentic view of Australia but what's more important, the characters and stories are top notch! I highly recommend the Scobie Malone series!

Poor editing and lack of consistency continue to plague this series

This is the fifth Lee Ofsted book I've read by Charlotte and Aaron Elkins. Frankly I'm not sure why I kept reading the series. I found these books to be flat, compared to the other series (Alix London and Chris Norgren) written by the Elkins. The formula for all five of them is pretty much the same - somebody dies (usually it's Lee who finds the body but a little different in this book) and Lee and her friend Peg, who has loads of money and can follow Lee around the country, decide they have to poke around and solve the murder. Their usual motivation for trying to solve the murder is that the deceased or a friend or someone else deserves their help in solving the crime.

Of course Lee's boyfriend/fiancé Graham is always in the background telling them not to get involved. He's always able to get involved though because he was once a homicide detective, a fact that all of the local law enforcement officials drawn into each murder seem to be impressed with.

Book 5 and I still don't know anything about Lee's family besides Graham. In one of the books it was mentioned that she had brothers and a mother and father, but very little on them beyond that. You'd think with all of her progress on becoming the 41st woman golfer in the world that it wouldn't be just Peg and Graham and Lou (her caddy) who are important to her or who show up at her events. Even with her wedding supposedly taking place just days away in this book there is absolutely no mention of her family being there for her. We know even less about Graham.

The poor editing continues to be a highly distracting element. At the end of the 4th book in the series Lee mentioned that she was being invited to Hawaii (the set up for this book) for a 70th Club Anniversary. Lo and behold, upon arriving in Hawaii, the Club is now celebrating its Centennial. It gained 30 years in just a few months. During the very last few paragraphs of the book, Lee and Graham have wed, and they are introduced as Mr. & Mrs. Graham Ofsted.

It's hard to read a series that lacks consistency in its story lines and is content to deliver very poorly proofed writing.

The Elkins Achieve a Good Score

As always an enjoyable reading experience by the Elkins with their golfing heroine and her somewhat older best friend.

Another solid read.

What did you like best about Year of the Demon? What did you like least?

The flashbacks for Glorious Victory Unsought and the Okuma boy were great and held me more in thrall than the modern storyline. I found Mariko a strong character, but I feel that if she had toughed it out in such a horrible working environment to get to be a detective, she would have been a lot less hot headed and in control that she was written. That issue always threw me off while listening to the modern sequences.

Would you recommend Year of the Demon to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes. It is a solid read, that keeps your interest 20 hrs. Can't argue with that.

At first the reader's performance threw me off as she tends to have an odd cadence/rhythm while reading. However, as I continued to listen this odd pattern grew on me.

Yes. This book ends on a cliffhanger and finishes in the next book Disciple of the Wind.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it got me through some very monotonous work in my studio, as well as cooking, washing up, etc etc

What did you like best about this story?

I think the back story on Glorious Victory Unsought and the mask should have been given chronologically instead of mixed up like it was, jumping back and forth between the abalone fishers and the samurai.

her performance is great, the recording is, well, I'm not sure why, but every now and then the recording of her voice changed which was irritatingly distracting and I would have to repeatedly rewind to get back into the thread.

I feel these stories are incorrectly categorised. I came across them because they are currently in sci-fi, if anything they should be in... ummm fantasy/ghost/magic that kind of thing as there is absolutely positively nothing sci-fi about these stories and I should know, I've read many hundreds of sci-fi.
