Private open for business

I thoroughly enjoyed this book; as I have all the other Private books. The narration is easy on the ears, I can clearly make out the different characters. He has tempted us with an insight to the slow burning back story with his brother, so By the end of the book he has left me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next story which could be an explosive one, or great if we travel to one of his other offices where we can meet some more interesting staff, clients and baddies.

Light on the Vegas

This is my second Private audiobook. One thing I really enjoyed about Private Paris was that the story and action took place almost exclusively in Paris, which helped to build the perfect atmosphere to support the story.

I liked Private Vegas but I would have liked more references to the City of Sin and the Beverley Hills storyline could easily have been situated there.

Patterson and Private fans will enjoy this book and I am going to listen to the other books in their serial order. I think the narrator does a great job.

Another easy listen.

I enjoy this narrator, the story rolls along well, with the normal Private formula. An easy listen that makes the miles pass easily whilst marathon training.

Didn't want it to end

Where does Private Vegas rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This is the latest in the Private series so I didn't want it to end as I knew there wasn't another to follow on with. I have read the whole series in 3 weeks whilst doing my 10,000 step walks each day. There are a couple of things from previous books that I believe still need to answered but I am hoping they will be in the next book. I have loved the complete series and can't wait for the next one.

Disappointing end

Typical James Paterson (plus one) page turner but it ended suddenly with me feeling cheated. They followed this with a trailer for another book that I will not be reading. Have enjoyed most of the other Private books but this may be my last. The book was very well read.

Another masterpiece!

Hooked all the way through and, as always, James McPherson's reading was exceptionally good. What will I do when finished!

Disappointing

The story was far fetched and not very believable. There were some elements that just didnt add up. The weakest Rebus novel to date.

On a positive note, James McPhersons narration was superb as ever.

Brilliant

Another great Rebus always enjoy reading Ian Rankin books. Hope there are many more to come

An exceptional novel, beautifully read by James Lailey. Len Deighton has a great understanding of human nature and motivation and has a remarkable gift for creating totally fascinating and thoroughly absorbing storylines. It's high time that the 20th century espionage novel, especially when written by the likes of Len Deighton, John le Carre and Edward Wilson, was accepted as a respected genre within the world of serious literary fiction.

Absolutely gripping end to the trilogy

This is a fantastic tense intricate Cold War spy drama which brings a great trilogy to a close. Wonderful locations, more fantastic conversation and characters. You MUST listen to the other two books before though. Very very good. Onto the next!

I hate these books finishing

they are so well written. the narrator is the best I listen to and I listen to several books s month.

Super Cold War spy drama

This is the third book in the series (Game, Set, Match) and although it can be read without the earlier books I do recommend that they are read in the correct order to get the best from them.

I read these in the 80's and was a little doubtful about revisiting - the Berlin Wall is down and the Cold War run it course but they have stood the test of time.

Great characters, interesting story well crafted for a perfect narration. There is very limited repetition of information through the books and characters and story are developed with fresh material strengthening the characters with each book.

Some people die, some have affairs or fall in love but it does not rely on gratuitous sex or violence to sell books. Neither does the writing have an eye on the film rights - what a refreshing change!

Think La Carre, think quality, think Deighton.

Next series - Hook, Line, Sinker - already preparing to listen.

A Quirky Old Time Favourite For Open Minded Detective Lovers

An unusual little production by not so much known Sable Jak, about a Victorian upperclass daughter who goes on a murder hunt. It is in three parts and although the acting is a little dated it still has an old style charm.

All who enjoy a good Victorian murder, will enjoy this. It is not a Sherlock by any means, but if you enjoy the story for what it is, you will want to listen time and again. It is a bit unusual and may not be everyone's cup of tea, so do listen to the taster before buying.

I wish there were more like this, but unfortunately this is the only one. It takes you away from the usual norm of detective productions and it is what I like. I am a Sherlockian to the heart, but I have an open mind and all though this is weak in some areas, a little classic all on its own.

Too many bones in the mulch!

This is the second Allies McMurphy fudge shop and McMurphy Hotel mystery? The setting of Mackinaw Island adds a lot to these mysteries along with the numerous scrumptious fudge recipes. In this book, the pup, Mal, finds some unwanted bones in mulch around the island, while Allie gets involved in a "scripted" cooking show so reminiscent of many shown on TV these days. The body count grows but the "why" and "who" is difficult to figure out, Allie keeps charging forth with her little pup, Mal, as her defender.

This is a fun series. I love the descriptions of Island events, Mal's antics, and Allie's two suitors. The mystery was interesting but difficult to actually figure out by following the story. Not as good as book one, but definitely good enough to anticipate reading further in this series! I listened to the book on audio and enjoyed the narration.

Who knew Fudge could be so interesting

What made the experience of listening to To Fudge or Not to Fudge the most enjoyable?

Well in the second book it was nice to see how Mel was contributing to finding all the body parts. I won't spoil it for anyone but I just love that little dog. Also I love see how she work with both love interest this time. I also love how Jenn got involved also. Her Mother brought more to the story as well I do hope we get to learn more about her parents in the future. The killer oh wow didn't see that one coming at all so it was nice to get stumped till the end.

What does Vanessa Johansson bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Did a great job.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When her mother broke down and shared with her about her dad and her feelings about the island and it people on there. I think it was a growing experience for them both. Also when both men kissed her. It's nice to see that even the plan girl can get attention.

I really enjoy the last 2 books and look forward to seeing more. I think it would be great to see her go through a winter on the island and I look forward to seeing were that goes.

Lister at His Best

I am a big fan of Michael Lister. I have really enjoyed all his books i hav read so far (5). The Jimmy Soldier series is an excellent read. Great characters and a plot line you can really sink into. I believe everyone will enjoy this book but i frecommend you read the trilogy in sequence. Also check out his other books. Double Exposure was the first book of his I read and it still resonates with me.

Great 1940's thriller

Michael Lister is one of my favorite authors. THE BIG HELLO, the third book of the World War II noir series, is all I hoped it would be. Jimmy Riley and Clip travel the streets of Panama City, FL looking for his lost love. Lauren is in danger and they hope to find her before it is too late. This is a fast paced book you won't want to put down.

Hellmann delivers another winner.

Although "Nobody's Child" brings us the fourth episode in Ms Hellmann's Georgia Davis series, and although it does refer back to events that took place in some of the previous installments, this novel stands alone well: You can enjoy it even if you have not already listened to its series predecessors (but it will make you want to do so!). You will like the character of Georgia Davis: She feels like a real person -- albeit exceptionally smart, but sill real -- because Ms Hellmann really knows how to develop character ... and write, and plot! The word "gritty" always comes to my mind when I listen to Ms Hellmann's Chicago-based novels -- Yikes! Talk about a "seamy underbelly"! -- and "Nobody's Child" digs right down into the grit. I want to hope that Ms Hellmann is exaggerating a bit -- or even just making it all up out of whole cloth -- when she describes the dreadful criminal enterprise at the heart of "Nobody's Child." I want to believe that people would never sink to such abominations in order to satisfy their greed; but I know that Ms Hellmann always does her research, and that she is probably exposing a true horror that none of us wants to see. Of course, Georgia Davis manages to penetrate the web of deception and cruelty spun by these wicked people (in this case, Russian mobsters), and to do so very cleverly: by setting mobster against mobster. (Take that, you wicked people!) In the process, she escapes death by the skin of her teeth; and emerges from her adventure with a new sister and a new boyfriend. (Whew!) Unfortunately, I have to say that "Nobody's Child" deserved a better narrator. Although Beth Richmond has an undeniably beautiful voice, I would have preferred a narrator with better acting skills ... even if she did not have such a pretty voice. In particular, this novel requires good Russian accents and better vocal distinction between characters. Aside from this one criticism (and I admit to a fussy predilection for good acting), I recommend "Nobody's Child" to any lover of gritty detective fiction.

An extremely well-written book dealing with very timely issues.

First Sentence: On a Monday morning in September, three weeks into the job, the Tiverton policeman took a call from his sergeant: shots fired on Bitter Wash Road.

Paul Hirschhausen ("Hirsch") has been demoted to Constable, and sent to back-of-beyond Australia where he's mistrusted and berated by his "fellow" officers. Internal Investigations in Adelaide is still after him, trying to convict him of something and willing to plant evidence to do it. In the meantime, even in his remote locate, there are crimes to be solved, including the body of a 16-year-old girl found by the side of the road.

If one ever read Rhys Bowen's "Hamish Macbeth" series, Hirsch's posting will remind one of that. However, that is the only similarity. Disher takes us about as far as possible from Hamish's Scotland, down to Southern Australia, but acquaints us with the area with wonderfully visual descriptions..."October gathered its skirts and raced past."

Disher provides very good backstory on Hirsch. The inclusion of his inquest was both interesting, but allows for his speculation as to why some cops go bad. We also see the frustration of a god cop working for, and with, bad cops; the blindness of "the thin blue line, and how corrupting that can be. On the other hand, it is interesting to see the diversity of calls to which a rural cop must respond and the relationship he must maintain with the community.

Disher does a wonderful job building up the suspense and tension. One can't help but appreciate the source from which Hirsch's rescue comes.

"Hell to Pay" is an excellent read; an extremely well-written book dealing with very timely issues.
