Best thriller I have read in ages
Best thriller I have read in ages! moves quickly along. It is clear pretty early in the book just who the two key players are, I think we are meant to catch on to that. The ending is an interesting one. It is not bogged down with detail, the only criticism I have is that I found the Kirsten chapters slowed it down a bit, I wanted to skip them. Some of the technical details not quite right, such as when a person takes an overdose of tablets they are just treated at home by their GP, I doubt that would have happened even in 1987 when the book was written.
    Five Stars
    as always excellent writing
    ROBINSON SCORES
If you like British Cozies, you will love Peter Robinson. This one is no exception. Robinson has such skill, he takes you into the story as if you were a part of it, witnessing every twist and turn along the way. His remarkable ability to keep you in the dark until the story breaks is so perfect........when reading his books, I will go to sleep casting from one suspect to the other trying to "fit each one in the frame" to determine who is the culprit. Caedmon's Song is one of his best.
    Five Stars
Great book as always, loved the tour of Whitby :-)
Peter Robinson - a great author
I found this quite moving and helps understand the character involved. you should follow up by reading Friend of the Devil, if you have already, then this will help understand a complex character. Highly recommended. This is a different kind of book by Peter Robinson, but very well written and very engrossing. Highly recommended.

Outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Batman has assaulted Spider-Man. Marilyn Monroe reported the crime and three Elvises witnessed it. It's business as usual for the cops out of Hollywood Station. But while they deal with the costumed crack-heads, prostitutes, purse snatchers, and ordinary lunatics that haunt the boulevards, in the streets behind the lights and crowds, the real Los Angeles simmers, never far from boiling point. But add a diamond robbery, the Russian mafia, and a cluelessly ambitious glass freak and something has got to give.

    great listen
Entertaining and amusing, good characterisation with an underlying thread.
    an unrelenting joy
    I am a harsh marker - but this is a 9/10 audiobook.
Contrary to the slightly misleading publishers blurb, this is an ensemble story which only really focuses on one story towards the end of the book. A full and diverse range of police officers and citizens are given a thorough outing and each of them brings a unique joy. While there are undoubtedly moments of drama and pain, the emotive core of the book is comic; Wambaugh has a perceptive and critical eye for Americana and all that lies within in it, with the cultures of drugs, police, politics and of course hollywood sent up in a style that quite frequently made me laugh out loud.
It should also be noted this audiobook is a fantastic medium; this is one of the best narrations I've heard from Audible, and the chapters are at just the right length at around 40 minutes.
I can think of few people to whom this would not appeal; as highly recommended as anything else on this site.
This one will sneak up on you....
I greatly enjoyed 'Hollywood Crows' by the same author, and so was prepared that this title would be a slow burner, and so it proved. The book starts by introducing some of the characters who will form the key thread of the narrative, and an sympathetic, mixed bunch they are; down-and-out meth-smoking 'Tweakers' and their hapless girlfriends, Eastern European immigrants with eyes on being gangsters, streets run by gangs, and the underlying screed of low-lifes at every turn, every one of them on the take.
Into this we introduce the characters of the LA Police Department: Hollywood Station, and the bizarre and often dangerous situations that make up their working day.
Because of the number of characters involved, it takes a while to 'set the stage', but stick with it, because as their lives intertwine a fascination set of events is put in motion that will definitely have you 'turning pages' right up the the last.
Narration, by Adam Gruper, really is first class. He manages to imbue each character with just enough of an accent so you can picture them as you listen, but avoids the trap of turning the whole thing into a radio play. I would definitely like to hear more from him.
    Highly recommended
    Graphic unhealthy to read
Was repulsed from the start right through, not suiable for general audinces - would have preferred to have been warned with a rating sys as this was R 18+ boardering on X.

    Great series, love Annie Aldington
Who was your favorite character and why?
I've just started the fourth book in the Daisy Lane series. I absolutely love Vera, Daisy's flamboyant unabashed best friend.
What does Annie Aldington bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I discovered this series after listening to Martina Cole's novels countless times and searching for more books narrated by Annie Aldington. She has become my favorite female narrator.
    Great Story
Enjoyed this book very much grat story line following up to her other novels in this Saga would recommend it
    A great book
A great book which pulls you from the start to the finish, can't wait to read the next book
    Easy to listen too
Love all the daisy lane stories working
    My way through the whole
    Series - recommended 5 star
Not as good as "Trust Nobody"
This the second book in the 'Daisy Lane' series stretches credibility further that this ordinary young lady can take on the gang fraternities of the 60's. One also has to accept a number of historical discrepances, some fairly minor but others more central to the plot concerning hippies in 1964/65, as well as the widespread use of hard drugs, and their being sold in schools! Furthermore elements of the plot, such as Daisy's revenge scam and the openness of the 60's sex trade are a further stretch of the imagination. The book is not for the faint hearted with very strong language and a number of violent and sexual scenes graphically described; but if you have listened to the first book in the series this will not come as a surprise. Having said all this it is a 'page turner' albeit quite slow at times, which cost the rating a mark. Very well read with fairly good characterisations, along some of the male 'voices' sound very samey! Will I download Book 3, probably because I want to know what happens next, but it won't be for a while.

Basis for tremendous, criminally forgotten film
A lunatic kidnaps a cop's daughter from Central Park and holds her for ransom. The cop has to do what he has to do to get her back.
The real story is that this was made into a film in 1980 that is nearly impossible to find. This thing is screaming for a DVD release.
Where to begin? For one, the cast. James Brolin plays the guy who is trying to get his daughter back, looking like Christian Bale with a beard and long hair. Dan Hedaya plays an insane cop who chases Brolin through the streets of NYC firing a shotgun. There's a Puerto Rican gang also after Brolin. Basically, no one will listen to him. Clemenza from The Godfather plays the detective assigned to the kidnapping. Adult acting legend Sharon Mitchell plays...a stripper, during a scene in 'the 42nd Street porno district' as it's called by name.
There are potentially disturbing scenes that are absolutely deflated by hilarious overacting. A lot of cursing, a lot of shouting. A lot of running, a lot of chases. Not much sense. New York is depicted as a complete cesspool of criminal lunes, dirty cops, and just irate, disgruntled people. The subplot of the whacko's mother-issue-complex-thing is disturbing, yes, but isn't given enough weight because the scenes are interrupted by the comic proceedings. At one point, Hedaya is fed to the dogs, literally. Brolin travels through some of the finer neighborhoods of 1980 New York.
Incredible, incredible film. Totally forgotten. Occassionally appears on TV, late at night.
I assume McGivern just sold the rights and let the filmmakers run with it. Should be studied as a prime example of overacting.
    A great experience!
Item as described. Great service and packaging! Excellent!

    Flawed but Entertaining
I certainly loved the story structure of this thriller. I love mysteries that thread through different timelines. Moreover I loved the premise of the main character, although I did find her precarious mental state a little overly-convenient at times to suit the plot.
On the whole, the story is a bit scattered and although it's all pulled together in the end, I'm not sure the main protagonist was a truly strong enough character to have all the threads of this story coalesce around her. So although you have a decent resolution, it felt a bit lacking at the end.
The narration is very good, though.
    Disappointed
Would you try another book from Sarah Rayne and/or Diana Bishop?
Yes I enjoy her books and I find that Diana Bishop is the only female narrator that I really enjoy listening to on audio.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I did not finish the book. I heard it until the 8th Chapter and then quit and returned the book. I have read other of this writer's works and really enjoyed them. I am sure I will be judged as prudish but the graphic sex scenes especially the rape was very offensive to me and therefore I did not finish it.
What does Diana Bishop bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Excellent voice impersonations. Good clear diction.
Was Spider Light worth the listening time?
    No
    Any additional comments?
If this had been an actual physical book I could have skipped over the sexual aspect much easier than with the audio book. I choose to return the book rather than finish it.
    Had to keep Listening!
This was an extremely good and creepy book. The suspense hardly ever let up, and the switching back and forth between time zones was not detrimental in any way. Is there going to be a sequel? Yes please....
    surprisingly gripping
A good read, found it hard to put down. The first couple of chapters seemed a bit old fashioned and slow, but it soon hotted up!
Spare me any more of that narrator!
Would you listen to Spider Light again? Why?
I do enjoy Sarah Rayne, although I think she pretty much writes the same story again and again - but it's enjoyably creepy and that's what matters. Unfortunately I was unable to listen to this one for long as the narration was just awful. Pauses in completely the wrong place, launching at words for no apparent reason; huge emphasis where none was needed.

"He has something of James Joyce's ability in conjuring up a vivid Dublin: but this modern city is very different from the one Leopald Bloom wandered through." (The Independent)
    Members Reviews:
    A modern Irish epic
The Midnight Choir is a big novel. I don't mean in terms of length but in terms of its subject. Rather than focusing on a particular incident, investigator or criminal this book depicts a myriad of crimes perpetrated by an assortment of criminals and paints a giant canvas showing how and why crime happens. There are crimes carried out due to desperation, corruption, greed and a fervent belief it is the right thing to do and they interconnect at the most unexpected points.
In Galway a man is prevented from jumping to his death by a young Garda who must then try to find out how the man came to be covered in blood that isn't his own. Meanwhile in Dublin a young mother tries to mug an American tourist at a cash machine while a seasoned criminal plans a jewellery robbery, hard man Lar MacKendrick gets back into the swing of killing people after the death of his brother and a young woman reports a date rape to Police.
At the centre of all of this is Detective Inspector Harry Synott who proceeds through these investigations as well as experiencing a series of flashbacks of incidents in his career which help explain why he's not everyone's favourite copper. Harry is a brilliantly complex character, struggling continuously with the question of whether justice can be served by the law. But if Harry's story isn't enough to keep you glued there are several other equally compelling personal stories that will, if you're at all like me, have you shifting from anger to sadness and back again at a rapid pace.
The story dealt with some uniquely Irish themes as well as the broader issues that are shared in big cities the world over so having the book narrated in John Cormack's gentle Irish accent was a definite treat as it helped me get absorbed in the world that Kerrigan had created even more completely.

Writing in the tradition of Ruth Rendell, PD James and Val McDermid, Elena Forbes has created a team of police detectives who are as intriguing as they are successful.
    Critic Reviews:
"An original and compelling portrait of a murderer." (Sunday Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Disappointing
What disappointed you about Die With Me?
The plot was not very interesting, the writing was weak and the characters were confusing, it was hard to work out who was who it was bland and boring
Would you ever listen to anything by Elena Forbes again?
    probably not
What does Dan Stevens bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
a accent that possibly adds to the story, I'm not sure, but he is a good narrator it was just a weak book.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Die With Me?
i probably wouldn't have bothered with the book at all
    Any additional comments?
im glad I didn't pay full price for this.
A Great Introduction To A Detective Series
Would you consider the audio edition of Die With Me to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version but found the narration brilliant and the application of voices and accents spot on; with enough character variation without being overpowering.
What did you like best about this story?
I found the character development was strong, gradual and effective, something which can be missed in detective/crime novels where the mystery itself is so intricate and important. But I can't wait to get stuck into another novel with DI Tartaglia and his team and find out more about the (hopefully) ongoing back stories.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Perhaps oddly, the opening scene. It was powerful and drew me in completely. And of course the very final scene that leaves me hoping that there is more to come in terms of this story and the characters it affects.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes; I actually did! It was only a 4-5 hour one but I listened while working online from home and was able to stay absorbed throughout. I had to occasionally hit the 30 second rewind when something I was working on made my mind drift and I didn't want to miss important parts or character names but was generally hooked throughout.
    Any additional comments?
An easy listen with good characters and a strong story. Unpredictable twists and turns throughout that keep you guessing even when you do start to suspect. Highly recommended.
