Detour

I have been a subscriber for the last year and this is the best audible that I have listen too. There are more twists and turns in the story that I thought possible. I was in suspense right to the very end. I can only hope to find another book this good!

Couldn't put it down

I loved this book. Couldn't stop listening. This was the first for me by this author and now I am eager to read more. If your into twists and turns, you'll love this one!

Exciting and Intriguing

I loved this book from the first word. The narrator does an excellent job of portraying the different people and their accents. Honestly, he is the best so far that I have come across with the accents. The ending was tied up neatly with a bow and a little to clean for my taste. The twists and turns throughout the book was very good.

Surprising ending..

This is the first James Seigal title I've read and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I found it a little slow to get going at the beginning, but things soon pick up. Lots of unexpected twists to this story. Recommended reading if you're into suspense thrillers. Holter Graham did a pretty good job at narration too so definitely worth a listen.

You'll have to give this one a chance..

Started out slowly but it picked up a lot after the first third of the book or so. The second half is definitely much more engaging than the first half since by then it's rolling along pretty well.

Stereotypical male and foolish wife

This husband cheated on his wife repeatedly, even in their own bed, then tried to convince the wife, Molly, that she was nuts and should see a psychiatrist when she had questions. All this while he knew his nutcase ex had a key to their home, and was using his last name. When the nutcase inevitably did what nutcases with too much power and latitude do, (no spoilers for the end) he stood quietly by-- still trying to keep his sordid secret. Not a likable male lead, (can't call him a hero) or a particularly likable female lead. This was my first John Lutz book. I sure hope the others are better.

An enjoyable book.

Oz Blackstone is the lighter of Jardine's two series, the other being police procedurals featuring Bob Skinner. Still, the character admits he's finally growing up and getting his life in order. He is clearly loyal to his friends, family and former lovers. It's an enjoyable book with some very good moments and an excellent twist at the end.

Hard-boiled Fun

This is by the author of _The Big Heat_ (also recommended), which will give you an idea what to expect.

This hard-boiled detective story is a fun example of the type. The 15-second sax intro sets the mood. It has all the ingredients: post-prohibition crime bosses, an Irish immigrant cop back from WWII, and hard-edged fight scenes. A handful of minor but clearly-delineated characters help the action move along.

This book, unlike the Big Heat, has an element of philosophical soul-searching as the crooked cop searches for an alternate path. It's sort of a Frank Capra Noir, if you can imagine that, but our protagonist is no Jack Friday. The noir elements predominate, and this was a fun ride down a dark Philadelphia street circa 1950.

Reilly Steele - an Investigator With Potential

Taboo is a debut novel by Casey Hill, a collaborative effort by husband-and-wife team Kevin and Melissa Hill. It features FBI forensics expert Reilly Steele, recently moved to Dublin from California. Not only is she there to assist the CSI team, but also she hope to put a family tragedy behind her by returning to her fatherâs homeland.

What looks like the murder-suicide of a young couple may actually be something much more shocking, and soon afterward other murders seem to suggest that there is a serial killer, one with a Freudian twist. All Reilly has to do is convince her cohorts. Detective Chris Delaney is on her side, but Pete Kennedy takes some convincing. Finally a link is established â the murders all portray acts that are considered taboo â and Kennedy is a believer. But they are no closer to finding the killer than they were at the beginning, and time is running out. When, and who, will the killer get next? And is there an accomplice?

I found the plot to be somewhat contrived, but as it developed, the pieces fell into place and began to make sense once I saw where it was all going. The writing style was very straightforward and was not exactly to my taste; I would have preferred more description, particularly since it took place in Ireland. The dialogue didnât feel genuinely Irish either. However, once I got past the first 25%, I felt engaged. I felt that the use of Freud and taboos was a clever theme. I began to like the characters, particularly Reilly and Chris. I found the story quite interesting, despite the fact that, for the most part, it didnât feel especially suspenseful. The best part is when it all gets personal.

I think that the Reilly Steele series shows promise. I got this e-book free and found the style to be typical of some of the free books that I have read. With some polishing, I think that Casey Hill could produce some very entertaining books.

A little 'dramatic' for my taste

The story here isn't too bad - it's not great literature, but sometimes you're in the mood for a disposable thriller - but I don't think Anton Lesser was the best choice as narrator.

I've liked Anton Lesser before - he was particularly good with Iain Banks' 'The Algebraist' - but I found him a little over-dramatic here, and I found myself wondering if his characterizations were really what the author had in mind. For example, there's a US TV producer character who Lesser portrays as a buffoon (the British de facto position for flashy American entertainment people), but I don't think he's SUPPOSED to be a buffoon - because if he was, the main character wouldn't take him so seriously all the time.

Not terrible, but not a must-have, either.

Robert Harris, you can't go wrong.

What does Anton Lesser bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

He did a great job at making the story enjoyable with the way he delivered the book.

After A Quick Start Things Never Quite Pick Back Up...

I would consider myself an "appreciator" of Michele Martinez because I have read 3 of her 4 books sequentially. "Most Wanted" had promise and "Finishing School" picked up from there. I would consider this book to be a step in the wrong direction. The book gets off to a quick start, but chapter after chapter you find yourself introduced to more characters who obviously are not "The Butcher" and after awhile it becomes a bit annoying to read page after page of "situations" without feeling that any real progress is being made.

I also sensed that in the attempt to make it more interesting and to add some twist and turns we are now being introduced to more characters than a John Grisham novel. There are US Marshalls, judges, DEA agents, FBI agents, etc. who are thrown in one after the other and it never really advances the story. The tension/suspense that was created in the first 4 chapters never really builds and I was actually let off the "tension" hook and never quite got back on.

I would give the book 3-stars for anyone who is following the "Melanie Vargas" series, but I couldn't recommend it to anyone who wasn't familiar with the story as I would recommend "Finishing School" which was a tighter package than "Cover-Up." I also agree with other reviewers that the conventional slang and terms that Ms. Martinez uses for her ethnic characters is still very contrived and many times stereotypical and outdated. However, it is MUCH better than it was in "Most Wanted."

For readers of the series check it out, for people who have are not familiar with the Melanie Vargas character, this wouldn't be the best intro for you.
