Excellent Spy Novel

An excellent spy novel that reminds me of Graeme Green. 'Double- crossing' spys that assassinate friends and foes alike, abound in this quite pro-British novel.

A great follow up to Dead Spy Running

First I would have to say that the author and narrator are the best double act for audible listening. The writing style is fantastic but made so much more intense and believable by the narrator Paul Panting, first class.

If you like a book that has strong characters, is fast paced and actioned packed then look no further. I would recommend reading Dead Spy Running first as Games Traitors Play is a follow up with many of the fine characters from the first book appearing. The lead character, Daniel Marchant, is perfectly formed and as an MI6 officer really shows that getting the job done is not always about being Gung Ho. The interaction with characters and their individual traits really makes this a good read (or listen). The twists and turns are well planned and played out, some you'll think you'll know but not always.... great suspense.

I've really enjoyed both books, I hope this is the first two of a series. I've read quite a few in this genre and can honestly say these are at the top of my 'top 10, reading list.

Jon Stock and Paul Panting more of the same please

Far fetched

I enjoyed Jon Stock's Dead Spy Running and I thought this would be a good follow up, but was sadly disappointed. Far fetched with too many loopholes and a plot that really began to take the biscuit. I felt this was a wasted purchase and will certainly not venture into the third instalment.

As good as Len Deighton?

This is a great fast moving story with plausable characters and a plot that has not been borrowed from other books. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recomend it to anyone.

Unbelievabel

The continuing adventures of secret agent Daniel Marchant takes him beyond a credible mission and possible adventures and lands him poorly prepared for a land of never- never land where sanity is the only law unobserved in his world. MI6, a competent organization, is portrayed as being half witted led by an incompetent dreamer and the only "Professional"turns out to be a spy. Paul Panting has an impossible job in convincing us of this warped reality but he tries even though you cab hear the disbelief at times.

This really gives spy novels a bad name. The reason for two stars was that it did get me off to sleep

Prettty Standard Fair

The hero seems to have grown an element of concious but it is a good listen albet pretty short. If you like standard Andy McNab this will fit the bill.

Suspenseful and interesting -- even in the 21st Century.

This is a pretty good book. It's hard to tell whether books of this era will prove readable, but this one passes the test. (Not many do, in my experience.) This is the journal of a socialist extremist who has escaped from jail, altered his identity, and gone to work for some really bad guys. Turns out they have the makings of a dirty bomb -- one planted somewhere in London. Our hero tries to prevent its detonation.

One of Householders' best

Householder, along with Andrew Garve js one of the masters of the suspense and mystery novel. Householder's books vary quite widely but his best may be considered as political thrillers and this is a prime example. The plot concerns one Julian Despard who is an anarchist - what we would really call a terrorist today. His dilemma is as a doctrinaire anarchist he agrees with the overthrow of an unjust society, but disagrees with the detonation of nuclear device to accomplish this. He rebels against his own cell and this is the story of trying to find the bomb before is is used. Along with the much more famous "Rogye Male" this is one of his best.

Engaging and unexpected

I really enjoyed the unusual storyline of this novel; a library is the last place I would have expected a murder to take place. I enjoyed the author's other books and this one is certainly up to her usual standard. The fast paced storyline kept me listening and the unexpected twists made for an exciting story.

fantastic reading. great voices for every character. fantastic story. Rendell was a master of describing all kinds of persons.

If you've nothing else to do

I am a big fan of Ruth Rendell, and can only hope that she wrote this book with tongue firmly in cheek.

The book revolves around the residents of a block of flats, and the people living in the houses opposite.

The book is populated by bizarre characters exaggerated beyond the point of credulity, and yet painted so thinly they cast no shadow: A richkid wanabe playboy who isn't rich enough or playboyish enough, a fashion journalist who is too shallow even to be a fashion journalist, an alcoholic who has adopted alcoholism as a way of life, a people watching old man who dreams up lives for the people he watches and is always wrong, and the list goes on. Then there is Tigerlily herself, who, despite the description you'll read on this site, casts no particular spell, terrible or otherwise, apart from a mild one over the main protagonist, and is more peripheral to the book than the description would have you believe.

When the murder does occur, the police investigation proceeds remarkably smoothly and the book limps its way to an unremarkable conclusion.

I EXPECTED BETTER

I found this book predictable and iritating. The characters were single dimentional and the plot strained. The product plugs jarred. Don't bother.

Could do better - both author and reader

Oh dear, my holiday choice was a frustrating waste of time. Poorly developed plot (was there one?) together with over eager narrator who seemed to exaggerate every sentence in an attempt to engage the listener. Like other reviewers I couldn't even see the point of Tiger Lily and fell asleep at the point where she started to get a little involved so missed it. Not one agreeable character and the ending was so flat. Was it poor writing or an overindulgent editor of a popular author? I was rather hoping that all the characters would get done in by the end in case any turned up in another book. My worst audible choice to date!

Tedious

Was this really written by Ruth Rendell? It was one of those books that you keep reading just because you think it has to get better - but it doesn't!

Outstanding - Narration & Story

This is a story with many twists and turns. Deep understanding of human character and strong development of all characters. Loved the narrator! She covered a range of voices - young, old, male, female, Scottish, American.

Enjoyable listen with a good twist

I did enjoy this book - wasn't sure what to expect with the story but great twist!

I won't spoil anything with the story - did have me hooked with wanting to know the next bit!

Degenerated into whiny naval-gazing

I had high hopes for this book. It seemed to be a good premise for a story and it started out well enough. But by about halfway through, I had lost all sympathy for the main character and I was none too keen on any of the other people in the novel either. I suppose the author's idea was to point out that we all have skeletons in our cupboards, but it did just come across as having a really bad group therapy session full of people you just want to slap.

Mistakes of childhood

This was a great listen. Chapters moving back and forth through time telling the story of Orlagh and Grace and how their friendship soured in the latter teen years. They both have secrets, but how deadly are they?

This is an excellent recording with great narration and definitely worth a listen.

This book is very good, but by far not Gerald Seymour?s best. Come on Audible lets see more unabridged recording of this mans work, as he has written some fantastic works, many are timeless and should be available on this service.

A very entetaining tale.

I found this book to be a very nice mix of history, humour and irony. The relationship between the two russian characters is both believable and endearing. Once I had listened to the first chapter I was hooked and coundn't switch it off.

Not his best effort

Having read a few of his works, I like his style but this was a dis-appointment. Overall it felt like a relatively simple story drawn out over an extended period and would probably be better as an abridged version.

Disappointing

I found this book very tedious. Little or no suspense, rambling, overly long and predictable; I could not recommend it.

Seymour is almost at his best, but .....

I gave been a longtime fan of Gerald Seymour, but he is now doing happy endings which reduces the realism of his tales.

That said, this book was still very enjoyable.

Great author!

I LOVE Johansen's writings - except that early on, the books were man meets woman. Woman spurns him. He pursues her. Catches her in the end. Later on, Johansen's writing took on crime/murder-mystery - with some romance in it and LOTS OF SUBSTANCE. Her later mystery/murder/romance books (more recent) are much more substantive.

Can't go wrong with this author!

This is the best author I have come a cross in years. All of her books keep me interested the whole time.
