"Something unkind was hiding in this quiet town."
Fulmer finds inspiration in music, whether the "jass" of New Orleans' Storyville or the rock'n'roll beat of Philly in the 50s. In The Fall, it all begins with yet another classic sellout, the Beatles' "She Loves You" tapped for use by a corporation. Married father of two girls enjoying a successful career in commercials while waiting for a theatrical break, Richard Zale steps into the past, memories of adolescent years with best friend Joey Sesto in Wyanossing, Pa. Impulsively, Zale attempts to get in touch with Joey to share the outrage, only to discover from Joey's sister, Angela, that his friend has fallen to his death in a bizarre accident. Although wife Isabel considers Zale's idea with some skepticism, Zale is determined to return to Wyanossing, plagued by guilt and a need for closure.
Stepping back into time when he enters the world of adolescence and childhood friends, Zale finds that not much has changed, even post-9/11, the same familiar faces grown more mature while Richard chose another path in New York. The meeting with Angela is bittersweet and it is here that Fulmer lays the emotional trap for his middle-aged protagonist, the awakening of an old romance with his best friend's younger sister, growing doubts about the circumstances of Joey's death and the obvious hostility of men "Richie" has known all his life, many of whom actively disliked Sesto. What begins as a nostalgic trip to assuage feeling s of regret and loss become far more complicated as Richie investigates Joey's activities before his untimely death.
Dancing with the dangers of attraction while staying with Angela, Richie strains his wife's patience, but is unable to leave, Joey's death looking more suspicious by the day. While a young waitress flirts with an eye to a career in New York, others follow Richie's every move. Zale learns why you can't go home again, but not before some ugly truths are revealed and Zale stares into the barrel of a gun pointed at him and Angela. From simple regret to murder, Fulmer's adventure down memory lane is fraught with unexpected menace, memory a foolish distraction in an age of terrorism and the futility of best intentions. Very good contemporary mystery
First Sentence: Later, after it was all over, I spent some time thinking about how it was for him at the end.
Actor and voice-over artist Richard Zale makes the trip back to his hometown after learning about the death of a childhood friend. While guilt of having been out of touch for so long may have drawn him back, questions about his friend's death keep him there. Why would someone terrified of heights commit suicide by jumping from an outcrop of rock?
The common man in an uncommon situation is a theme I appreciate, when done well, and Fulmer does it very well.
