Enjoyable read with very interesting Texas characters and setting with fascinating plot.

This one has it all!

The second book featuring Jeremiah Spur, and other great characters. Dialogue is excellent, and, as with the first Spur novel, "Night of the Dance", the plot twist was impossible to see coming.

Tale of Texas

This book is second in the series that began with 'The Night of the Dance' in May 2003, and features two of the earlier characters: Jeremiah Spur, a retired white Texas Ranger; and Clyde Thomas, the first black deputy sheriff in their Texas county.

Jeremiah is enjoying his retirement: taking care of his cattle, attending local high school football games, mourning his daughter's death, and missing his wife, Martha, who is back east seeking treatment for alcohol abuse. At first, he doesn't think there is anything that would make him go back to 'work' on an investigation with the FBI. However, when the agent mentions that the man the FBI seeks to help once knew his own father, Jeremiah can't say no. He's off in search of a man who allegedly embezzled a large sum of money from Benjamin Farkas, a refugee who years ago was mentored by Jeremiah's father as a button-man for the CIA.

Meanwhile, Clyde is investigating a shooting in the parking lot of a local convenience store that left a known drug dealer and his girlfriend dead. As to Clyde's own relationship with white Assistant DA Sonya Nichols, pride seems to getting in the way. She and Sheriff Dewey Sharpe play only minor roles in this book.

Slowly as the cases evolve, you begin to see a connection between them. When Jeremiah puts Clyde's life on the line to solve the case, you sure hope the Texas lawman is as good as his reputation tells.

This book does not have the shockers of Hime's first book, but tells a solid story of two good detectives pursuing the truth from the US to Mexico to Europe, and of Jeremiah's quest to learn more about the father who left when he was a young boy.

I really enjoyed this book, I thought, as I finished up. But in the very end, Clyde and Jeremiah each do something for the other that made my heart soar and kicked the book's rating over the top. I would recommend that you read 'Night of the Dance' first, if you haven't, so not to miss the impact of the ending of 'Scared Money.'

Narrative skill--big time action!!

It doesn't take long.

Within the first few chapters of this, the second pairing of retired Texas Ranger Jeremiah Spur and Washington County Sherrif Clyde Thomas, the reader will know that they are in for a special ride.

The first indicator is the multiple narrative viewpoints, and the distinct voices that accompany them. None of them first person, but written in such a precise manner that you'd think three different people were responsible.

Hime fires up this terrific book with the murder of a drug dealer on a dark night in an empty lot.

Love the Margaret Binion mysteries, wish the author would write more of them!

Fun Whodunit

The heroine of this novel, Margaret Binton, is billed as an American Miss Marple, and the book does not disappoint. Margaret notices an empty lot in Manhattan being turned into a garden, and approaches Luiz, the man in charge of the work. She soon joins the elderly Puerto Rican man and his ragtag band of teenagers in planting the inner-city garden, and makes friends with Luiz as well. When Luiz is murdered, Margaret digs in an area of the garden he seemed concerned about, and finds a box of stolen diamonds. Because she's got friends in the police department, she convinces them to rebury the diamonds and stake out the garden to find Luiz's killer. While the cops keep an eye on things, Margaret herself takes up the investigation, focusing on the teenage gardeners until she narrows it down to the killer.

Margaret Binton is a lot like Miss Marple, an indomitable elderly widow in good spirits who's liked by everyone around her. She goes about doing whatever she wants with no fuss...and no interference. The scene where she talks a friend into renting her a car because she "hasn't bothered to renew her license for a few years" and then admits she hasn't driven since 1948 is priceless. In addition to her demeanor, Margaret Binton also has a sharp mind, narrowing in on clues that others miss to find an answer to a mystery that seems obvious to her, while everyone else is stumped. An odd contrast to this upstanding, likeable old lady are the foul-mouthed cops who are exasperated by her at times, yet trust her implicitly.

A fun little novel with a plucky heroine, I recommend this book for anyone who likes a good, lighthearted whodunit.

I enjoy Warren Clarke narrating the Dalziel books but I do wish he would do them unabridged.

If you???ve listened to books by Reginald Hill before, how does this one compare?

I love Reginald Hill's Dalziel and Pascoe books, but this was for me the weakest one of all. The story is not very exciting. Focusing on Dalziel's visit to a family, the domestic setting takes long to start being interesting. Pascoe is absent of the main plot unfortunately, playing a very small part in the story.

See If You Can Find An Abridged Version

The story was different, in many aspects, to the usual 'whodunit?'

Interesting choice of victim(s) by the author.

The story was well crafted ... carefully thought out and constructed. 'All bases were covered.'

And that led to the major drawback of this book.

TOO MUCH DETAIL.

Descriptions of actions and of elements of story development were gone over in fine detail, and then reenforced by the same details presented once again, but from a slightly different angle. At times, the excessive detail had my mind wandering, but I didn't have any trouble getting back to the story, when I caught myself doing that. The story hadn't really advanced anywhere beyond me.

None the less, it was a good listen but, as the title says, look for an abridged version.

Doubtful.....just didn't like the slowness of the story.

great story was a little slow on the build up but i guess there was s lot of twists and turns to set thr plot up ....but i can safely say iy went along nicely with a twisted end anyway thoroughly enjoyed it ...great piece of escapism ...a book not just for women but men 2

Dont let my rating fool you

I love Simon Brett's stories. Just some are better than others.

Having an often 'just resting between parts' actor as our hero is good fun. So too are many of the one liners . Usually there is at very least a smile or an " I must remember that one".

This time Charles is working on a TV set for a crime show where he gets to meet a few coppers and learns of their departmental politics, as well as surviving the self important crew fom 'Bob's Your Uncle Productions'.

And as much as I also enjoy the Charles Paris BBC plays, I like Simon Brett reading his stories too.

If you emjoy British humour and quirky murders, chances are you would enjoy Simon Brett as an author .All up a very pleasant change of pace after a work out on adrenaline inducing stories.

What a disappointment. The story took forever to get going and when it did, the denouement was entirely predictable. I found the writing to be of Mills & Boon style and the narrator's accent irritating.

The Glory Boys

Was very glad to see these earlier novels by Gerald Seymour being made available for kindle. I read this thriller many years ago and I have to say that it has stood the test of time. As with a lot of the authors work there are no winners here. This is not so much an action packed story (although it does have it's moments) it has a more subdued, restained feel to it. This is a dour and uncompromising thriller.

Well presented characters, excellent dialogue and a well executed plotline. These earlier novels of the author are well worth a look at. Time and money well spent.

Thriller ahead of its time

What makes this book remarkable, other than a very well written plot, is the date it was published. Seymour certainly saw what was coming in the Middle East and the situation with terrorists 30 years ago.

Where does The Journeyman Tailor rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Its a slightly shorter audiobook than I would normally listen to, balanced by great writing. From the first moment it creates atmosphere, tension and gravitas.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Perhaps it could have no other ending, but somehow it was the weakest part for me.

What about Brian Coxs performance did you like?

Without overdoing it, he creates drama and believability
