Not the best book to read !

Didn't really like it.The whole book just seemed to go from one set of characters that possibly might have killed these women to the next set. The character desriptions were good. Maybe because it was in England, I 'm not sure. I will say the ending was a surprise, but the book just didn't flow easily to read.

An interesting book as it followed the search for information and deductions for the perpetrators of a series of killings. It also showed how this was made more difficult by the widespread locations of the crimes.

Three murders, and yet....dull.

We are introduced to a cast of characters here, but it's like reading a roster. We don't ever get more than mildly acquainted with any of them. This book illustrates the importance of fleshing out the characters enough to arouse the reader's interest in their actions. No one in Smokescreen evokes even tepid curiosity, so at the denouement the reader shrugs "Huh.", immediately - and completely - forgetting it. How I know that is I chanced across this book in my library a couple days ago, where it showed as downloaded in April 2012. Not remembering it at all, I decided to read it again. I finished it this evening, and the memory is already fading fast. Again.

Nothing particularly bad, just...dull.

The story line is not bad. But the narrator ?????

I don't know if the mic is to close to her mouth but

the sounds that come through while she's telling the story

are unnerving. I have listened to this narrator before and it's

like that with all her works. She ruins the book!!!!!!

A great read. I could not put it down.

exciting legal thriller

In 2008, Cynthia Jakubek graduated from Harvard Law School and anticipated a prestigious position at a Manhattan firm. However, the financial Great Recession delays the start of her career as most law firms are cutting experienced staff and not hiring new employees. Thus, she returns home to Pittsburgh where she accepts a job as an intern for defense attorney Luis Mendoza and lives with her widowed father.

At the Pittsburgh Museum of American History Museum, the body of sexagenarian philanthropist T. Colfax Bradshaw is found amidst a life-sized diorama of the Revolutionary War Battle of Lexington. The victim's teenage daughter Caitlin hires Cynthia to represent her in a strange case that involves the 1995 theft of a painting valued at $500 million from the Isabella Gardner Museum in Boston.

This is an exciting legal thriller that looks deeply into the impact on the law by money, social class, race and religion as Hillary Bell Locke makes a powerful argument that justice is not blind only myopic. At least this one finished properly

A reasonable enough plot, but was, as with all her books somewhat dragged out. At least this one did not end suddenly. As with some of Holt's other books Sheila Malory's reaction to the killer is out of character. I thought a lot more could have been done with the plot as some of the family skeletons that had been uncovered were far too easily put back into the cupboard.

The best character in this series is not Sheila Malory but the cantankerous Mrs Dudley. She is a fabulous character and probably the best written, the scenes with Mrs Dudley add a little humour and a break from Sheila's constant eating at the Buttery, babysitting , dog walking and complaining about her animals.

Great for travel as no complicated plots that one has to listen carefully to in order to keep up.

A Travesty!

I admit to not reading the entire book, an excerpt was enough. This is a fictionalized account of a true heroine of the SOE in WWII. I have read all of the nonfiction accounts of Noor Inayat Khans life so was interested to read All That I Have. It is a travesty. It may be entertaining fiction, but it has nothing to do with Noor's life.

At the beginning I thought it was heading for mediocrity but it actually improved and became difficult to predict. It rose from 2 to 4 starts

Wooden Prose

Like the other reviewer, I also thought this book got off to an incredibly weak start. But I like to stick with something at least until 100 pages or so. This novel, however, was a real struggle. Not difficult to read, just difficult to enjoy. So, unlike the other review posted on here, I didn't think the story picked up or improved very much. The prose was wooden and the characters were shallow. Not much in the way of a believable story or a gripping one. All in all, a disappointing read.

A highly recommended Swedish thriller!

This easy reading mystery will quickly capture you. The back and forth banter between members of the police department seem realistic and easy to follow. Events appear to be unrelated, but the final chapters bring everything together. There is one bit of a puzzle: why would a normal 4 year old child be wheeled around in a buggy? 4 year old children typically run their keepers ragged!

Seems unfinished

I'd like to give this 3-1/2 stars. I enjoyed the chatty dialog and friendly ribbing among the police detectives. I was very happy that a contemporary detective story could be constructed without a lot of gratuitous,horrible, gory detail--only enough nastily aggressive and distasteful anti-social behaviors to make the crimes truly repugnant. If I read this correctly, the two main story threads are supposed to meet over the idea of child abuse. However, the story enfolds in too detailed, disorganized--one could say "jumbled" a way, and no such point is clearly made. The characters, while given a few superficially distinctive traits,are otherwise pretty thin. There are some very unlikely occurrences, such as Detective Winter not observing the stutterer as the man they are looking for. The final outcome also seems weak and not really tied to either character or theme. In other words, complication substitutes for characterization. I wish the author had re-written this rather intriguing story over again with more depth and polish.

I was conflicted about a 4 or 5 star rating, but I felt that the reader knew too soon who the villain in the book was,and the only mystery was the unbelievably complex relationships between the assaulted and the assaulter. That just seemed to be too complex to tie into the main framework of the story.

I don't know what it is about reviewing a book that makes one want to nitpick. I love the way Scandinavian writers interweave weather and locale into their stories. And, there is a sense of Paradise Lost in their books that we Americans find creeping into our culture.

Nabb's dual cases merging in Some Bitter Taste

Magdalen Nabb's Some Bitter Taste shows Carabiniere Guarnaccia sympathetically as humble and attuned to people as he struggles with an older woman's fears and reluctantly involved with a rich man's minor robbery. What brings the older woman's case to the front is what looks like her murder -- and his guilt for not visiting her before her death. However, he also wins over the rich British gentleman who is dying and who has had a previous more serious robbery. How these two very different cases come together is fascinating. I enjoyed particularly the description of the villa above a smoggy Florence of years ago, the gardens like the Boboli Gardens behind the Pitti Palace. Nabb has a knack for capturing in vivid detail reminiscent scenes and situations in Florence, as well as memorable characters. The only problem is that the solution only comes at the very end.

The Marshall Guarnaccia literate mysteries are a joy

I recommend that readers with the same goals as lvkleydorff (see review below) follow his advice and avoid the literate, beautifully written complexities of Ms. Nabb's Marshall in her all too brief series. Our hero plods, rather than walks, understands rather than articulates, and is convinced that he is barely useful to his superiors. He is actually does the detecting, while others are managing the procedural pieces. The plots are well constructed and unfold in a series of gifts to the reader. The Marshall understands the morality that guides the characters, and suggests that character is more of a guide to action than shallower motives. In the Marshall's efforts to understand what he sees, the reader is drawn into the same comtemplations that this middle aged, overweight sensitive and kind man without exposition by the author or exploratory peeks into the Marshall's thoughts. That's writing that is magic. In Some Bitter Taste, each of the victims would have been far happier and avoided their fate had they not lived by the rules laid for them in childhood. The unmentioned lesson seems to be that the current presence of the long past is inescapable, which seems a fact in real life for Florence (the setting) or any country with a long and remembered history. The Marshal, with his solid presence and blinded by the sun (light makes his eyes water), takes in the shadows to discover the true crimes. The atmosphere, point of view and necessary time to have the reader join the world Nabb develops so well is not for readers of thrillers and people who want only a plot to unravel.
