Different From The Movie, But Nonethless Compelling

I saw the TV movie when it came out in May of 1999. I watched it in total suspense and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was also delighted when I discovered that it was based on a novel. And I was positively tickled pink when they had it at my local library. I checked it out and read it on 2 days. In the movie, the parents were happily married, but in the book, they are seperated due to the mother's alcoholism. Robin, the main character, is a confident young girl when she goes to Summer Camp and meets a painfully frightened and shy girl who seems scared of her own mother, whom she discusses frquently. During a dare, the shy girl goes into a lake, despite the fact that she can't swim. Unfortunately, the young girl drownds and since Robin gave her the dare, she blames herself for the tragedy. When Robin and her father move into the new apartment complex, Robin meets a kindly middle aged woman, or so she seems. As the woman's behavior grows stranger and stranger, the suspense builds. I love this book because you never know what'll happen next. A riveting and chilling psychological thriller for those of us who are exahusted with endless police plot stories. Enjoy!

Bird Girl in a Cage

Robin Garr, 12, nicknamed Birdie befriends a girl at a summer camp. She attends camp on the heels of her parents' divorce. After witnessing the drowning of a bunkmate, Robin has nightmares; loses weight and goes from an outgoing, high-spirited child to a timid, cowering one.

Robin's father, Marcus has custody of her. They move to Boston and he immediately seeks the services of a good psychiatrist for his daughter. A weird neighbor in their building takes a bizarre interest in the girl and Marcus keeps pushing Robin into accepting the woman's overtures. Robin fears her and for good reason.

Dorothy Cotton is a sinister character. Her motives are extremely questionable. She has an agenda, but is it the deadly one Robin fears? And what is with the secret diary Dorothy Cotton keeps and tries to force Robin into copying? Does she have anything at all to do with the tragedy at the camp?

While I personally didn't care for this book, I will gladly recommend Gloria Murphy's other works as they are of extraordinary caliber. This one was the single bust, the exception to the rule.

Better than it title

The title of this one suggested to me that there might be a political or

religious subtext, which I do not like in mysteries. But this one is from

beginnng to end a top notch novel that shows Simon's growing skills and

depth of characterization. The title refers to the old days of a Jewish

mafia and brings some marvelous, credible characters into the mix. As usual,

thoughtful insights into interesting characters together with hard

boiled action. A great read for those who love good mysteries and good novels.

Excellent!

Dan Reles is a gritty cop set in a gritty time period in Austin. This book is the 4th in the series, and continues the excellence of the first 3. I highly recommend reading all 4 books - but read them in order as they truly build on each other. The books could probably stand alone, but the true richness of Michael Simon's writing comes out through the development of the characters and storylines from book to book. Excellent suspense tale, great characters - highly flawed and deeply human.

Gritty, tough, and full of suspense "The Last Jew Standing" by Michael Simon is a sure winner for crime fiction fans.

This fourth installment of Simon's Detective Dan Reles series finds Dan with a new home, a new wife, a son, and far removed from the life he once had in New York. But there is no way that Dan will ever escape his past...especially when it shows up on his doorstep.

Dan's father, Abe has been on the run from the Mafia for twenty-five years, and when he shows up at Dan's new house with a Russian prostitute on his arm, Dan--who still blames his father for his mother abandoning them--can't imagine what he wants.

But he knows it isn't good.

When a former employee of Mafia boss, Sam Zelig turns up dead, Dan is even more concerned about his father's arrival in Austin. And when Sam Zelig and his goons make it personal, Dan is forced to make some tough decisions...never knowing if he's right or wrong.

Michael Simon gets the award for drawing me into a book with the very first sentence. Late nights, skipped meals, and falling into bed with my clothes on were all well worth it, just to read a bit more of this oustanding novel.

Finally, I found the mystery and eroticism of this book. Daina, the most beautiful Cuban witch who I know, is one of the literary idol of my adolescence and I we have all grown, matured and, of course, we have perfected. I recommend the book and Amazon as a vehicle to meet.

I hate it.

I asked for "Casa de juegos " the BOOK, And I received "Casa de Juegos " in cassettes!!!! Who have a cassttes player now in USA? I am very dissapointed. Next time I go to a book store or other web site.

Fascinante

No se como empezar a describir esta novela. A primera vista, pudiera clasificarla como una novela erotica, pero es mucho mas que eso. A diferencia de otras novelas eroticas que he leido, aqui el sexo es un pretexto para llevarnos a reflexiones mayores, como los estados dictatoriales o la relacion entre el sujeto dominado y el dominante... A pesar de las sombras ambientales de la trama, se trata de una novela escrita con una prosa brillante y extremadamente poetica. Pero nadie vaya a pensar que se trata de una prosa que se pierde en palabras y que al final no dice nada. No, aqui la poesia CUENTA cosas, nos hace participe de las sensaciones y de los sentimientos de la protagonista. Podemos sentir en carne propia sus reflexiones y sensaciones, pero de una manera muy diferente a lo que otros autores suelen hacer con la prosa poetica. El final de la novela nos deja con una especie de embeleso que no termina despues que cerramos el libro. Se trata de una vibracion que continua con nosotros durante mucho tiempo, y que nos lleva a cuestionamientos muy diversos. La autora es capaz de llevar a cualquier hombre a meterse dentro del cuerpo y la mente de una mujer, de una manera que --al menos para mi-- es nueva. Fue una lectura realmente sorprendente y muy gratificante... Pero !ojo! no es un libro recomendado para pacatos. Preparese a leer sobre casi todas las variantes de la sexualidad humana. De todos modos, si bien algunas escenas pueden resultar bastante fuertes, se trata solo de la fuerza de la imagen, porque las descripciones parecen dibujadas con un fino y delicado pincel.

Una novela erótica diferente

Me ha encantado este libro. Se trata de una novela distinta. Tres cosas que me llaman la atención: el lenguaje tan poético que se usa para narrar escenas de un erotismo intenso; la atmósfera de intriga y de misterio en una novela de corte esencialmente erótico (cosa que no había visto antes, al menos de esta manera); y el hecho de que en la trama haya una segunda lectura, otra interpretación, que subyace debajo de la propia anécdota. No se trata solo de un libro entretenido, sino hermoso... y que te deja pensando después del punto final.

Disappointing Yawn

The story was convoluted - I lost interest before I was half-way through. The characters were caricatures - Sexy, blond, Ivy League scientist dedicated to finding the truth even if she has to bend the rules while she rides around in her cool T-bird, etc. etc. I don't even want to deal with the childish talking computer that appears in the latter half of the story.

I am a big fan of sci-fi, thrillers, and suspense genres, so I am more than willing to suspend belief if the story is compelling, but Immunity is just ludicrous.

Also the narrator was very disappointing. The accents were amateruish and several words were mispronounced. The only reason I finished it was because I was on a long drive and I had no backup book.

Volk's Personal Journey Continues

InVolk's Game, Brent Ghelfi created an intriguing character: an emotionally damaged Russian patriot who is filled with contradictions; a ruthless killer who feels compassion for widows and wounded veterans; a thief who dispenses charity; a man who questions his capacity for love while sacrificing himself for the sake of love. The character of Volk develops further in Volk's Shadow (also sold under the titleShadow of the Wolf-- it's the same book, folks, don't buy it twice!).

The story takes place six months after the conclusion of Volk's Game, and I suspect a reader would be a bit confused diving into this book without reading the first one. The complex and occasionally confusing plot pits Volk against terrorists and politicians, brings him into contact with American and Russian spies, and takes him back to Chechnya, where he lost his leg and perhaps his soul. All of this (backed by plenty of violence) would be routine stuff in thriller world except that Volk continues a path of personal growth that began in Volk's Game: he begins to question the conflict with Chechnya and the role he played in it; he starts to wonder if the man he has become is the man he wants to be. Like the first novel, the story is a fun read, but the well drawn main character is what really makes it worthwhile.

Can be worth five stars for the right reader ... who I am not

I am horrified by this book whereas my husband loves it and insists on a five-star rating. Oddly enough, both of us agree entirely on the quality of Ghelfi's writing, but our final interpretations differ drastically (otherwise, I would file for divorce at once). Below I am going to elaborate on how we think his writing method works. Attention: ALL quoted ("") lines are taken from Ghelfi.

First, the author relies on a list of words to bring lots of Russian décor to his creation:

MATRYOSHKA - a wooden nesting doll. A compulsory attribute of all Russian homes which is as sacred to a Russian as the American flag to a U.S. citizen. When Russians are unhappy about the state policy, they burn MATRYOSHKAS, not flags.

KONTRACTNIK - any non-conscript soldier in the Russian army, typically a corporal or a sergeant.

Way Ahead of Its Time

At half the length of your standard thriller, but with the full count of plot, movement, and tension, Enemy Within is a rare phenomenon -- an airplane read that sticks with you years down the line. This special thriller repeats that sort of seeming contradiction from front cover to back. First of all, ATF Special Agent Wade Stuart (how's that for a good Mississippi boy name?) is a remarkable character who manages to come off fresh and yet still make us comfortable with him fast, to the point that we think we've known him a while. The plot of a Mississippi-based militia actually threatening the foundation of our country seems hard to swallow when I write it, but, believe me, it seems real enough at 40 pages in that you probably aren't putting the book down after that. I don't want to give away my favorite part of the book, but I have read countless thrillers in my life, and there is a surprise in this book that I have never seen elsewhere. And it doesn't involve gadgets or anything else like that. It's a full head-spin for us and Wade Stuart... I'm not going to give it away. But the cool thing about the surprise is that the book isn't written simply to justify it. It isn't the main villain and it comes off as incidental, but it jarringly reveals the world we're in. I just got finished reading Vince Flynn's "Pursuit of Honor." Good stuff, but, honestly, Phillip Thompson does better. The southern setting and the easy protagonist set this apart.

An unlikely hero is found in Wade Stuart.

You can't help but compare this novel to Tom Clancy's works. In which case, "The Enemy Within" is much easier to chew. Wade Stuart is written as a more down-to-earth character than other political or military thriller characters written in the past. Like Clancy, Thompson knows what he's writing about, but he brings it down to a very accessible level that anyone -- even I -- could understand. His detailed description of militia activities in the modern-day South throughout the story really makes you wonder "what if." The ending seemed a bit hurried, but that could have been due to editing constraints from the publisher. If he continues with this character as he promises, it's clear that Phillip Thompson has the right stuff to make Wade Stuart a hero for everyone.

Enjoyable-technically and historically accurate

A scaled down Clancy, with a more likely hero. You root for Wade Stuart because you can relate to his angst. He's just a "good ole' boy" trying to do the right thing, no matter the cost. He is ruled by integrity and steeped in the traditions of the Marine Corps. Author accurately portrays the infighting of the Marine Corps and its recent evolution. Style is direct and concise. Pace is good, although I wanted more and more--what was Wade like as a kid? Look forward to author's next release and more on Wade.
