What would have made Einstein Must Die! better?

Where to start? Sophomoric writing, no historical accuracy about the era, historical figures, or situations.

What was most disappointing about Chris Kohouts story?

lack of any structural consistency in his plot or technology involved. Supposed to be set in the early 1900's yet the book begins with a sea-battle between a Ship of the Line and a Constitution class frigate. It gets worse from there.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Corey Snow?

I think he did the best he could with the material.

All of them.

Yeah. I know Steampunk has its own rules, but this book felt like it was written from a ninth-grader's study hall day-dream. Thank God for Audible's return policy.

story time!

The second book in the series, had the most going on. it was quite fast paced for my taste, with a lot to remember, and especially nice presentation idea for the past long gone. there are no significant time skips of the main story, so all of them go pretty much linear. but it was a memorable read in the end.

Hold on for a fun ride from start to finish

I enjoyed this book - put simply - it was really fun to listen to. I was not familiar with the Spirit of the Century game & other books prior to starting this one but had no problem following along. Khan & Bulls-eye are wonderful characters and they're dropped into a fast paced adventure on Mars. The planet was full of surprises and I loved the diversity of the Mars population. (How can one not like the idea of frogmen from Mars?)

Oliver Wyman does a wonderful job bringing the story to life with his performance.

Will I be reading more in the Spirit of the Century series books? Yes.

Will I be buying more books by Stephen Blackmoore? Yes

A Great Gem

Where does Khan of Mars rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This will be on the "frequently listened to" list, up there with Ready Player One, the Agatha H's and Fuzzy Nation as something to enjoy when I need a familiar tale.

Have you listened to any of Oliver Wymans other performances before? How does this one compare?

Oliver Wyman does a great job reading this. I love that he also did the Dinocalypse series because he keeps a great continuity in the universe. I'd happily seek out other books he's read

I practically did, between the audio and the ebook.

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to dive into the other Spirit of the Century books. There will be another Khan book, a Sally Slick novel, and an Amelia Stone, at least. I can't remember if there will be more but you can bet they will all find their way into my library, esp if Oliver Wyman continues to read them

Excellent fun for kids

Loved the book, was like watching at TV show with the amazing reading. Felt that some of the language was cliche and the analogies were well worn. IE "cut through them like paper." But this was not high art and, though predicatble, great fun. Stronger and more polished in the begining than toward the end.

Loved his other work...

If you're a "sit down and read the whole book in one or two sessions" kinda person, then you may understand it. I read it over a period of several weeks, and he lost me somewhere. When I read the ending it made no sense. Yet when I read Light, I not only got the ending, I was moved to tears. Maybe it's me.

Its Okay

I found myself reading a bit, growing tired of the vague and obtuse story line, reading some other book, then coming back and finally finishing. Yeah, John has a good grasp of the English language, and what is he trying to convey, a good story or a triumph of vagueness, in which to illustrate confounding aspects of the Tract. Interesting in some ways, frustrating in others.

Definitely rereadable

Loved "Light" the first in this series and "Nova Swing" was OK but needs another look after finishing on this high note... M J Harrison's style being kind of Faulkner-esk there's a stream of consciousness thing mixed with hard technology space opera is an acquired taste I guess but it hits the spot...highly recommended after starting at the beginning...

Quantum Poltergeists

After the introductory 'Light' and the dull 'Nova Swing', I expected the pace to pick up and the final part of the trilogy to result in a thrilling denouement.

Despite the fast pace of events from the present to the future and all other possible spatial and temporal dimensions, the ending was a damp squib.

So what was the Kefahuchi Tract? Can someone elucidate. Besides vomit, mucus, pointless sex, cats and a series of elevated rotating dead bodies not much seemed to happen at the end.

Despite the vast potential when playing around with quantum stuff this was a real let down!

Great book and so finely crafted.

M John Harrison's prose is so finely crafted that, as you read it, you know you're experiencing something extremely important. Empty Space is no different, and is perhaps near the pinnacle of his craft.

Good story. Hard to listen to narrator.

First of all, I am a *big* Charles Sheffield fan. I love his work so I was looking forward to listening to this book. That lasted right up until the first female character was voiced. The narrator uses variations on a 1930's Brooklyn housewife accent for his women. The president of the United States, astronauts, financial executives, high powered company directors, all have the same early 20th century New York working class accent. It doesn't work as well as you might think.

Very Enjoyable Sequal

Starfire is set 27 years after Sheffields novel Aftermath. In Aftermath, an exploding Alpha Centauri goes super nova. The various particles knock out all the electronics on the plant. That novel has all the moving parts, it threatens returning Mars Explorers, there is a rival boiling within the survivor group, person interest, political intrigue, and a dash of implied sex. I gave it good marks. At the end of Aftermath, we learn that the old second shoe is going to drop and threaten Earth in about fifty years. And, oh no, no one can quite figure out why Alpha whent all ballistic it was supposed to be impossible I smelled a sequel. Enter Starfire.

Through some prestidigitation, there is a life extending medical therapy (side issue) that allows numerous characters from Aftermath to be back in the saddle for Starfire. Some of our old pals are back like Oliver Guest, the serial murdered of 14 year old girls. Sheffeld actually does a great job making Guest into a sort of perverted hero go figure. Anyway, there are solid new characters and the story is gripping and holds your interest. If you liked Aftermath, then youll like Starfire.

One negative note, Gary Dikeos is AWFUL. Sheffeild, dude, you need to get another narrator. His voices are terrible. He makes one of the principally powerful women sound like a cross between Minnie Mouse and Betty Boop.

Review: I picked this up for $1 because of the cover. It looked so ridiculous. Turned out, the story was intriguing, with odd twists and turns. The idea is simple: corporations battle in simulated conflict, with a pre-negotiated agreement of what winning means and what the winner gets. As two corporations, a Communications firm and an Oil company battle it out, the outcome has repercussions for the entire world.

First, the tech is awesome. The idea of kill-suits and time-stamped bombs â war without bloodshed. The characters, each active in a part of the whole, collide in the end, and see the whole for what it is. For some, it means wealth and power â and for others, it means death.

Fast-paced, with lots of turns, it kept me hooked. The characters are bit shallow, but defined enough, and there isnât enough time to really develop them. The story moves quickly and some of the details are left out, but given this is based on a short story, it makes sense. I recommend as a fun read, with some depth. The book is slightly terrifying in that it could happen - someday our corporations could take over the world, issue their own currency, and make governments obsolete. Itâs not unthinkableâ

Asprin's War books at their best

I have read Asprin's amazing "Myth" and "Thieves' World" series, and compliment him greatly on these fine works. One day, I was reading a list of Asprin books and saw "Cold Cash War". Normally a fantasy lover, I expanded my horizions and decided to see if this science fiction/war novel was any good.

Boy, was I suprised. Asprin amazes me with grim detail and cultural changes in his "corporate world", where the country is run by feuding businesses. With mercenaries and Japaneese samauri, these corporations battle the US government in the ultimate battle for business freedom. Not for every Asprin reader (especially not a lighthearted one), but an intriguing book for any techno or war fan. The only depressing thing about it is that Asprin never wrote a sequel.

Predictable is not a bad word for me

Predictable is not a bad word for me. I hate stories that throw in a "twist" just because they can. I got this whole series because they are a good tale of men in combat with the family life of a soldier thrown in to boot. great books.

Good Military Science Fiction

Military science fiction. It's part of a series and is a pretty good read. The author has a definite grasp of military tactics and incorporates them into his plots well.

Great Book

Early military SF that set the standard for folks like Weber. Totally worth your time but, start with the first book in the series....it is worth the ride.

It's in the combat...

Look, if you are looking for a great story, with evolving characters, then look further. In fact, Shelley's Buchanan Campaign is far better for those things. Shelley is not the world's best writer but when he writes what he knows there is a lot in there. He knows small units tactics. He knows light infantry. His descriptions of combat aren't the best but aren't totally unbelievable. The disappointments in this are: 1) this is the first book in the series where he even mentions that the DMC has tanks and artillery, but they make no appearance, which is strange since even a platoon of armored vehicles might help a lot on a contract; 2) the enemy here are highly-developed, with a large air force, and their is mention of heavy equipment, but it also makes NO appearance (both sides have whole regiments of infantry involved in the combat, but only the enemy manages to muster a handful of light mortars! ); 3) the whole concept of a benign military regime on Dirigent is downright silly; 4) at times the technological superiority of the DMC is inexplicable. Mr. Shelley, please use your knowledge of light infantry to show us what happens when the armor shows up. It would make a pretty exciting story... But if you like to read about combat, you will still enjoy this book.

Fun but still not as good as book two

In Masks of the Martyrs Jack Chalker brings his strangely fun space swashbuckler to a close. Hawks and his crew of pirates/revolutionaries must take the last two rings and shut down Master System all while dodging the tyranical computer's minions as well as those who would use the rings to rule humanity themselves. We find out more details about the pirates of the Thunder, Chalker again puts them in a really bizarre situation in order to get ring four, and there is lots of fun to be had in the heroics and space battles.

This book falls short in that the end was something of an anticlimax and I did not find myself really caring for the the characters I followed through the four books. Somewhere about halfway through I began to feel detached and a little bored at times. However, Chalker came through with some memorable moments and truly inventive situations that kept me going to the end.

Five Stars

Don't let the cheesy artwork on the cover throw you off. This is solid Sci Fi writing!

Enjoyed the whole set

you need to read the whole set to get sense of the story (four books in total )to me it is a good read

Sea folks vs. settlers

The Seas of Emathe is an unusual novel. It's open at both ends and leaves much to consider in a story about our type humans settling on an alien world and sea-living humans already there adapted to the planet. Its unclear how long they've been residents.

The settlers are there to mine and harvest a drug, Mylanar-g, in a plant which helps starship pilots use the starways again for traveling in their globular cluster . They live in a few settlements on the coastline and harvest the seas. The Nale'nid, as the sea dwellers are called, have powers which our people do not. They are seen as aggressive and do damage to the ships, people and our settlements.

There are three main characters: Seth, a starship pilot, with a crew and mission from the central government to investigate the disturbances which threaten the colony. Lo'ela of the underwater people who out of innocence falls in love with Seth and becomes a leader to encourage her people to understand and work with the settlers. Racart, a settler friend of Seth is taken by the Nale'nid, loses his fear and becomes enamored with their society in the underwater cities.

The story splits between two scenarios. The settlers and most starfarer mission folks and the Nale'nid with Seth trying to figure out what to do. The settlers eventually sent an armed harvesting fleet to get the sea dwellerâs attention and accidentally(?) kill two at home. The Naleâid, with Loâelaâs leadership and Sethâs guidance help work to bring the two sides together. Peace, cooperation and potential power result.

This novel makes you think. It's basically an after armageddon story with interstellar flight powers dividing then join the two races. Great read.

Focus and Flux and Merpeople

Great start to a interesting story line. Space travel reminiscent of Dune spice navigators. Telepathy by possibly humans living under a sea. Definitely worth the read.

The author's descriptions have power, but a story of educated barbarians with advanced technology versus noble savages with magical powers is a tired trope.
