Jeschonek takes you on a wild ride!
What did you love best about Sci-Fi Motherlode?
The stories were engaging and stayed with me. I loved the twists and turns. Jeschonek is a master storyteller, with a talent for surprise endings. Narration by Bill Lord was superb!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Smidgen the Snack Cake was definitely my favorite. I have a marketing background, and this story gave me chills. How much are we really being controlled in the marketplace? It was surreal, but also seemed a natural extension of where we're heading.
What about Bill Lords performance did you like?
Lord has a talent for changing his voice to fit the story and character. His every word is completely believable. Now, I can't imagine these stories without his voice.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The story about the serial killer was chilling, but also deeply human. Jeschonek finds the humanity in the most frightening characters and situations.
One of the Best Voice Artists I have ever heard.
Would you consider the audio edition of Sci-Fi Motherlode to be better than the print version?
Yes I would, Bill Lord brings life to the story with his silky smooth voice and animated delivery. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to him work his magic.
Have you listened to any of Bill Lords other performances before? How does this one compare?
This audiobook was recommended to me by a friend. I have not heard any of Bill Lord's other works, but I am looking forward to listening to his entire library - What a Talent!
    Outstanding Add to Your Collection
Would you listen to Sci-Fi Motherlode again? Why?
Yes. The very precise description of the action made it gripping. The crisp, clear narration makes the story come alive and compels me to listen.
What did you like best about this story?
    The narration of the action.
Have you listened to any of Bill Lords other performances before? How does this one compare?
    Yes. Best performance to date.
    I Hit the Motherlode!!!
If you could sum up Sci-Fi Motherlode in three words, what would they be?
Unexpected, Twisted, Out-There. I grew up thinking I didn't like science fiction. Who knew that it could be so much fun? Robert Jeschonek definitely has a creative mind and a twisted sense of humor. Between his clever writing and the narrator's brilliant interpretation of the characters, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this listen. In fact, I had a hard time hitting the "pause" button.

    A Thriller !!!
    Any additional comments?
I listened to this audiobook and it grab me and won't let go until I heard the end I wanted to learn what happens with Harry's nephew and family in Indiana and the difficult and deadly journey of Harry, Frank and Derrick to reach them. Lots of suspenseful moments.
    Very standard stuff
This listen was so run of the mill. Just very standard stuff as far as plot and character development. Nothing special here. Cliche' comes to mind. Didn't bond with any of the characters and was unable to become invested in the story. "I'm getting too old for this ****" was the favorite line of the tale and used far too many times. Skip it. Three stars was generous.
This audiobook is one that will grab you and won't
Tony Baker's Survivors of the Dead: From the Ashes was excellent. Mr. Baker very easily and vividly painted the journey taken by Harry Lancaster, Derick, and Frank in an exciting and detailed manner. From the moment Harry stepped from the apartment complex in San Francisco, he managed since retiring from active police duty and shooting his first zombies, it was a thrilling ride a mile a minute!
Struggling to reach the police department where he volunteered was intensely described so much so that I felt I was making the journey with him! The relationships that are built or already there are solidly built and powerful. Torn from wanting - needing - to help others, Harry reminds himself he's "just too old for this sh*t." 2.5 decades of service teaches Harry to be observant and he realizes the weakness of some of the zombies and uses it to his advantage.
The Clint Eastwood connection is strikingly strong - not only are there similarities between Harry and Clint (Harry loves the Clint Eastwood movies) but the narrator makes sure you "hear" Clint Eastwood whenever Harry speaks. Excellently executed!
Not only is the book seriously written (as is the case with most zombie books) the humor and connection between the characters is not forced but flows naturally.

    Horrible Writing
Would you try another book from Ron Foster and/or Duane Sharp?
This is almost unlistenable. The narrator does the best he can, but the writing is bad and the situations are laughable. I couldn't get past the first hour.
I need my money back on this one.
What could Ron Foster have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
    Read a different book.
Did Duane Sharp do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
The characters were different grades of cardboard.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment followed by desperation to get the earbuds out.
    A great compilation
This was a wonderful story! All the characters from the prepper trilogy are in here and many are featured in a novelette form that features and focuses on their thoughts and actions of surviving the disaster. Lots of humor and great insights and survival tips and tricks.

    It could have been bloodier....
What disappointed you about Blood Red?
What a fantastic premise for a post-apocalyptic zombie novel. I gave it an extra star for that alone. It started out strongly; but unfortunately, the awesomeness of it was virtually lost in it's execution. This is a YA novel about Rachael, a 19 year old college student whose emotional development was arrested sometime during her sophomore year in high school (my guess). It turned out that there was not much going on in Rachel's head and she had the emotional tunnel vision of a child. Her decision making process was frustrating and nonsensical. Who walks into a post-apocalyptic Target for one item and leaves with one item? Rachel with one flashlight and the batteries she put in it. And the world was over, I mean apocalypse over.
Has Blood Red turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, I love a good post-apocalyptic and/or Zombie story! I prefer great, but I'll read a 'just good' one and enjoy it. There is a whole lot of dreck published in this hugely popular genre. I sift through a lot before I settle on one I'll think I'll like. This one was so well reviewed, I took a chance and missed.
What three words best describe Jessica Kaufmans voice?
Screechy, dog-whistle, headache (no joke). There was another 19 year old character whose voice was described as high-pitched in the narration, and Ms. Kaufman delivered. I thought I was listening to anime. Bonnie, a nurse in her late 40's with no backstory, spoke in a 'Mom' voice that I imagine is from 1950's, even with a sing-song cadence of 'Radio Days'. Nobody speaks like that, I wish they'd retire the whole matronly cliche voice for anyone who is either a mom at any age or is a woman over 40.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Annoyed at times and on the whole: Disappointment.
A new twisted look at zombies, er, no pun intended
I found this story to be a fresh take on a topic that is getting done to death by other authors... er again, no pun intended there!! This author's take is original enough and keeps you well on your toes the whole time. It's more of a feeling that something is coming that makes it scary, rather than filling pages and pages with gore and atrocities. There are a couple of heartbreaks and some very human moments when you feel for all of the characters. I'm not sure if another book is coming, but if there's I'll be sure to purchase it.
    No.
    Any additional comments?
This book sounded right up my alley, but once I started reading it was apparent it was clearly not for me.

An important time to think about.
Would you consider the audio edition of A Prepper Prepares for Christmas to be better than the print version?
While I love the print version of all of Ron fosters books, I really enjoy the audio versions. His narrator is fantastic and it brings the stories more to life!
    Any additional comments?
I love this because of the connection to Christmas. It's something I have thought about...wondering how these moments would be "celebrated" in such conditions. The book looks at it very well.
A season of holiday preparedness cheer
What did you love best about A Prepper Prepares for Christmas?
This I bet will soon be warmly regarded as the classic prepper Xmas tale. Ron captured the meaning of the holiday as well as how to prepare when disaster threatens. The characters are believable and the story is fun and filled with compassion and survival lore.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I like Boudreaux the Cajun for all seasons. He keeps things interesting with his antics.
Which character as performed by Duane Sharp was your favorite?
Duane actually sang the time honored Christmas carol featured in the book and did a amazing rendition that I will go back and listen to next holiday season.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    A Merry Prepper Christmas
    Any additional comments?
This book is about Christmas arriving post disaster but the storyline makes it a good read anytime!

    Great Book
Narration was great none better than Sean Runnette. He keeps the characters interesting even when there is a lull in the action.
    Ending Run, Fail
Hugely disappointed with this book, as I loved the first in the series. Runner had such good pacing and such diversity in the set of characters and its mission was a valiant one. 3/4 of the way through Logos Run the writing was on the wall that the book was likely not going to end well. What a disturbingly abrupt and unsatisfying ending, I wish I had stopped after book one. The performance was great across both books but the finality just left me disappointed in every way.

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 71 votes
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The Silicate War has been over for 15 years, and the tension among the dominant galactic races is growing. Many fear that the Umblegarri, the ancient alien race that ushered humanity into the interstellar galactic community during the Silicate War, have been targeted for conquest by the Crax and their allies.
It's no longer speculation. The invasion is underway and Kra finds himself strapped to a hospital bed, critically injured and surrounded by hostile corporate lawyers, high-ranking military and intelligence officials, ambitious members of the criminal justice apparatus, and an Umbelgarri diplomat. All are demanding answers or their pound of flesh.
Krakista Keesay, a Class-4 Security Specialist, doesn't have the answers they demand. Why did he sabotage a top-secret research facility? What was he doing on a quarantined planet? Why did he set up the civil transport Kalavar for destruction? Is that all? Not even close.
Kra turns to his only option: Allow his brain to be hooked up to an experimental device so that he might prove his innocence. Or lose his mind.

Would you listen to Relic Tech again? Why?
No because I never listen, read, or watch a audio, book, or movie twice. But I thoroughly enjoyed this story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Kra Kessay a character grounded in old world morals and survival techniques who survives in a future world of technology
Which character as performed by James Conlan was your favorite?
I did think Mr. Conlan's voice was a bit too formal in some action parts of the story. Hence only a four star rating.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Difficult to do with any audio book. I listen in my car while traveling
    Any additional comments?
I read another review that panned Relic Tech rather badly. In my opinion the reviewer was completely wrong. The story concept of a warrior armed with only a shotgun and pistol against future laser and energy pulse weapons is a brilliant concept. It gives the listener something to be grounded in. Lets face it, inner galactic wars is not a realism many of us can believe in so the entertainment aspect is what we're left with. The other reviewer stated the concept was unbelievable. As if inner galactic wars is believable. I read and listen to stories to be entertained. This story is entertaining. Mr. Ervin's ability to weave a tale is extraordinary. In a make believe world he made totally unbelievable characters come to life.
    Really Enjoyed the story .
One of the better fiction books I have enjoyed this year. I look forward to book two of the series. ..
It is like the story missed a soul.
Krakista Keesay, a Class 4 Security Specialist, find himself strapped to a hospital bed and accused of crimes against humanity. The worst part is that he doesn't remember a thing, and the only way to defend himself is using a procedure that could fry his brain. But he has no choice. This will be the beginning of the Crax wars.
The premises of this book were great. Our main character is accused of something he is sure he did not do, but as he does not remember anything, they will have to use a dangerous procedure to fill in the gaps. I think the intrigue was well built, and I felt quickly interested in what could have happened to Krakista onboard the Kalavar.
There are a lot of characters in this long book.

Also while at school, Ian was awarded The Lord Mayors Prize for English, in a competition open to all the schools in London. His first published stories appeared in the late 1980s, but it was not until the early 2000s that he began to pursue writing with any seriousness, joining the Northampton SF Writers Group in 2004 after being introduced to its chairman, Ian Watson.

Full sails in a thin milieu...
It's interesting how an author's work can strike a positive chord in some, and in others, a severe dissonance.
Think before you react on my statement. Consider a few of YOUR favorite authors - You love their work, while other people loathe them. Ultimately, it's about an author's words reaching out to YOU, where YOU live, and a literary connection is birthed, a relationship between inspired writing and your personal taste.
How does this diatribe regarding style and preference fit into this review?
In the case of this particular work of Ian Whates, this simple literary rule will predominate for both its listeners and readers, and here's why:
Descriptive expression is so important for successful fantasy or scifi writing, because you're asking the reader or listener to suspend disbelief, and journey into the author's work in good faith.
Mr.Whates excels in plot and character communication and interaction. However, while he has built a FASCINATING milieu, bursting with astounding potential, the descriptive necessities of the world he's created could be more detailed. Despite this weakness, this is out of the box creativity personified - The potential here for great storytelling is superb, to say the very least.
That being established, if you enjoy urban fantasy, with a mixture of originality, steampunk, magic, intrigue, and interesting dialogue, you'll enjoy this audiobook, as I did, and you'll forgive the less descriptive narration. However, if you like rich, deep, lengthy descriptions of the author's literary world he or she has created, a solid focus on setting the milieu, such as Jordan does in his "Wheel Of Time" series, you may NOT fully enjoy this author's first work in the series.
As to why I like this work, it's very original on a number of levels, and if followed through appropriately by Whates, it has the tremendous potential to become a fantastic launchpad for future works.
