    Publisher's Summary:
Crystal Rain is the much-anticipated debut novel by Tobias S. Buckell, one of science fictions newest and most promising talents.
Long ago, so the stories say, the old-fathers came to Nanagada through a worm's hole in the sky. Looking for a new world to call their own, they brought with them a rich mélange of cultures, religions, and dialects from a far-off planet called Earth. Mighty were the old-fathers, with the power to shape the world to their liking - but that was many generations ago, and what was once known has long been lost. Steamboats and gas-filled blimps now traverse the planet, where people once looked up to see great silver cities in the sky. Like his world, John deBrun has forgotten more than he remembers. Twenty-seven years ago, he washed up onto the shore of Nanagada with no memory of his past. Although he has made a new life for himself among the peaceful islanders, his soul remains haunted by unanswered questions about his own identity. These mysteries take on new urgency when the fearsome Azteca storm over the Wicked High Mountains in search of fresh blood and hearts to feed their cruel, inhuman gods. Nanagada's only hope lies in a mythical artifact, the Ma Wi Jung, said to be hidden somewhere in the frozen north. And only John deBrun knows the devices secrets, even if he cant remember why or how!

Looooooooooong lead in before the action starts.
If you read any of my other reviews, you will quickly realize but I have a short attention span. Most of the books I enjoy start off pretty fast and that's needed to keep me interested. Sorry, I'm just one of those kind of people. This book almost lost me, but I'm glad I stayed with it because it was actually a pretty imaginative story.
The plot about humans who have settled on another planet far in the future only to be cut off from the rest of the universe because of an ancient war among other aliens is an interesting premise. These humans are nothing but pawns to a superior alien race and are being used like soldiers and slaves. They have developed more like the people of the Stone Age, but with limited technology. Their are guns, steam engines and blimps, but not much more than that despite their ancestors coming through wormholes in starships.
The world building and introduction to the various characters took a really, really long time to develop. During the first two thirds of the book you could only catch glimpses of where the story was heading. Those small glimpses were enough to keep me interested but just barely.
Crystal Rain had less science as far as science-fiction goes, and focused more on cultures and ancient beliefs. If it wasn't for Pepper, who is a complete badass, I probably would've bailed on this story before finishing it. But he was an intriguing character with high-tech bio enhancements which made him almost superhuman and immortal. This technologically advanced human working among "primitive savages" was an needed dynamic.
The narrator was incredible. I could listen to him read the phone book. His baritone was just plain manly and his mastery of Caribbean dialect was spot on. The one small issue I had with him was the difference between women's voices and higher pitched male voices was difficult to discern. That's nitpicking because overall he was terrific.
Now, my biggest problem with the book was what another reviewer also mentioned.

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
When the world first heard about the meteorites, it was already too late. Ten arduous years later, Mick and his small group of eight had adapted to the new way of things. With no clean running water, power, or forms of communication, the Earth went backward, taking with it almost everything they held dear. Survivors like Mick were forced to do the best they could with what they had. Because in the post-Impact world, alternatives were a luxury that no one could afford. Now a deadly virus threatens those who were unfortunate enough to survive. With the clock ticking down on their lives, Mick will navigate the deceitful webs spun by those that oppose his drive for salvation. And along his quest to prevent another catastrophe, Mick will rediscover what it truly means to be human.
Impetus does away with the genre's tendency to dwell solely on the catastrophe, to instead examine the very-real human experience and condition behind a world-changing disaster.

missed opportunity, but perhaps there is a second?
This seems to be the first audiobook by Scott M Sullivan on audible so I did not have any idea what to expect. The story is exactly as described in the blurb. The blurb probably oversells the story somewhat as it was really pretty simple good guy verses bad guy type affair with some tension thrown in involving the main characters kids. There is no great detail regarding the meteorites, not a lot of information regarding the decline of civilisation. I kept on expecting more information, perhaps flash back type chapters, something else to give more detail. I think this could have been achieved considering the audiobook is only 7 hours and 20 minutes in length. I don't want to sound as though I didn't enjoy the story, because in truth I did! But I get the sense it could have been a lot more. Perhaps the author has a second book coming?
The quality of the narration was good, no background noises or any other distractions. The narrator Tristan Wright has certainly been busy with titles on audible but mostly with shorter minecraft titles. I listened to most of the book at 1.25x speed and some parts at 1.5x speed. This did not distract from the listening pleasure and is an indicator to me that the narration was a little slow. So once again this fact impacts your $/per hour equation. I don't have a lot of cash to burn, and I hate it when I pay more than half of what I earn per hour to listen to a book!
    not bad
I really never got pulled into the story fully. The story was fun but not great. I am undecided whether I would buy the book again, whence 3 stars.

    Sir Francis Drake in Space!
This is a future-age retelling of some of the adventures of Sir Francis Drake, with some of the experiences of Hawkins thrown in. One engagement, partway through the book, in which Captain Ricimer and party barely escape with their lives, is based on the engagement at San Juan de Ulua in September of 1568, in which the carrack Jesus of Lubeck was captured by the Spaniards, and Hawkins, in a smaller and handier ship, barely got away. There are equivalents to the Spanish (the North American government) trying to dominate all the worlds, Portugal (the Southern Cross confederation, which was granted some of the planets, by the equivalent of the Vatican), the New World (the interstellar worlds all claimed by Pleyal (the equivalent of King Philip), the leader of North America, and his Southern Cross allies), enslaved Blacks (the alien Molts), the Native Americans (the Rabbits, regressed humans from lost colonies in the interstellar reaches), and the Pacific (the Mirror universe, reachable only through certain hazardous routes). When I first read these, I wondered if we might see (for example) Martian colonists fighting a revolution against the North Americans, and taking up the role here of the Dutch separatists (but I was disappointed there). Author Drake, a Vietnam veteran, spends some time mentioning the psychological toll the action and killing takes on the men. (Different men seem to handle it in different ways, some becoming desensitized to a dangerous level, while others are visited by the ghosts of their victims when they try to get some sleep in their rack at night. There was no term yet for PTSD in Sir Francis Drake's time, but even then, I imagine that fellow warriors appreciated there were incidents their friend, just returned from the wars, did not wish to discuss. I would think in the future, there would be some provision to care for psychological casualties, but perhaps counseling was one of those things which became less popular when the previous human civilization collapsed?) While the story is derivative, it still remains interesting. (Of course, your mileage may vary -- I'm an SCA member and interested in the exploits of the English Sea Dogs, the Dutch War of Independence, the Spanish Armada, etc.) By the way, for the Spanish Armada (or its equivalent in this series), check the next book in the series, "Fireships".
    Wonderful
I read the second and third books in this series first and just got around to this one. It's a great opening to a wonderful trilogy.
    Elizabethan Privateers In Spaceships
This is the second book in the Reaches series. This book deals with Piet Ricimer and Stephen Gregg's supposed mission to the asteroid belt that really is a pirate raid through the breach. The breach is a dangerous passage through the Mirror, a block between our universe and another. The other side holds the treasures of the defunct empire, automated factories churning out the chips that hold civilization together. Gentlemen and aristocracy are the linchpins of the society on Venus.

    Best Sci Fi Fun anywhere!
Choose this and don't look back.
Daley was a consummate SciFi yarn spinner.
If your looking for fun, look no further!
    Love this book.
    Any additional comments?
Can't wait for the other two to make their way to Audible! This story is the perfect buddy adventure. If you have every had a wingman you could trust and would do anything for, then you will see echoes of it in this story. I totally disagree with the fellow who thought it seemed dated. Actually the technology has held up amazingly, considering how old these books actually are.
The narrator has a great voice, but the voices he chose for Alacrity and Hobart don't really work for me. A little nasal and better suited to a Raymond Chandler character, but not so bad that I didn't enjoy the book.
Hobart & Alacrity loose among the stars
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, this is a creative story with a clear 1970's SciFi feel. I'm not sure if it's the vintage feel or it's different take on humanity amongst the stars. Either way it has a light fun feel to it.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Requiem for a Ruler of Worlds?
One would be when they find out Tilly has a series of penny dreadfuls, schilling shockers planed featuring the fictionalized exploits of the duo. Titles like Hobart Floyt & Alacrity Fitzhugh among the slave women of the Super Nova. Definitely 70's and definitely light.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The dust up with Dincrist ending with the Greshams beast being drawn into the taxidermy robot. This highlights Dincrist as their nemesis. Dincrist as the interstellar shipping magnent, ruthless, entitled and barbaric. Definitely a David and Goliath match up with the added advantage of Alacrity persuing and falling in love with Dincrist daughter and only heir, Heart "The Non Pereil"
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Hobart said his good bye to Weir as he lay on the funeral pyre. Weir the ruler of nine star systems and thorn in Earth Services side who included Hobart in his will.
    Any additional comments?
It's a fun series not earth shaking but fun. Especially if you've read a bit of SciFi from the period.

Very unusual story that grips you from the outset
I can virtually guarantee that you will never have encountered as odd a story as this. I couldn't put it down, because the setting was so peculiar, and because I had no idea what was happening. This may not sound like much of a recommendation, but trust me - it's addictive!
I have read all three volumes of the trilogy on my Kindle, so I was interested to find out how they would work as audiobooks. The answer is, very well - with a couple of reservations. I was surprised to hear an American reader, because the narrator clearly appears to be English (English slang, referencing UK TV shows, Guy Fawkes etc). The reader also puts rather odd stresses on words and sentences at times. However, he does a very good job of giving the characters different voices, and I enjoyed his performance overall.
Do give this a try. You may never have heard of the writer, but don't let that put you off. If you like inventive, speculative fiction with a dystopian twist, this is one you'll love.
I received a free copy of the audiobook from the author, but this is an unbiased review.

    worth every penny
I had come across this book and after some contemplating I purchased it and have never regret ed it. the story is completely original and fast paced. looking forward to the next book.
Dark urban fantasy with a slow but steady pace...
It's building up slow, but soon enough you start to engage into personages' lives, especially, Zeika, Monjo, Caleb, and, I even found some sympathy and understanding for Ezekiel, the killer. The perspective is good, by taking major personages perspective and narrating from their point of view. They start to feel real and the characters didn't have exaggerate traits (as in some other stories) and their actions feel so human and understandable. Only some small twists at end felt overdone, were not clear and seemed a bit artificial. But it also may very well be a good starting point for a greater and longer story. The author tapped the potential of a great and long series, and although the world seemed confusing and unclear in the beginning, over time I could feel the great potential and draw the grand picture, all pieces falling together and the world started feeling so real, so alive and so dark at the same time. If you like stories that are long-dragging, slowly building up, but with giant worlds, with several story lines and keeping up with many details, while building the whole thing together and if you're fan of apocalyptic world or urban fantasy stories than this story is definitely for you !!!
I liked it a lot and now I'm waiting and wanting for more, for developing of all this and the culmination in the following books.
Side note: no need to buy the two separate books (volumes). This one is fine.

    Love this series!!!!
Another great Victor Tookes adventure from Allmond and Bretz!! I'm flying through this series. I actually finished it this morning but jumped right into the 5th book and didn't get to the review of book 4 until now. One big improvement I noticed from book 3 to book 4 is how the writers are getting better (more imagination, clever, grammar, etc...) and I can see them "grow" right before my eyes! I'm so ecstatic because these are really terrific stories and I'd hate to see them get poor reviews because of the lack of editing or immaturity early on. Right from book 1 I could see the potential that this story had and now I'm on book five and its only getting better.
Congrats to Kirk Allmond and Laura Bretz for continuing with their ideas and writing so well together!! I can honestly say, I will be very sad when I'm finished with the, What Zombies Fear, series!!
Great story + amazing characters = Excelent book
What Zombies Fear are unusual zombie books. It is not only about a brief survival, but about redemption and victory. We have good and well developed human characters struggling just to avoid being infected; amazing protagonists who rely on love and on their own humanity to keep fighting the creatures, and we have not only zombies, but also zombies. While the superpowers add new possibilities it is how the characters relate with each other what really makes the series what it is: An epic tale about friendship, love, and zombies.
Fracture is the best one so far. Mr. Allmond has grown as a writer and the book is well paced, alternating epic fights with deep introspective moments. It shows how easy humans can turn into monsters only to satisfy their own needs. And how real heroes will always fight for what is right. Waiting for the next one. Keep them coming Captain!
Short read but lots of action
This book was proofread much better than the previous books in the series. There were still some typos, so if that is a real issue for you be prepared. The book was also really short. And it lacked a recap of the events up until that point which was a bit refreshing.
This book was also action packed, and brought on some interesting twists, that kept it original and exciting. I really enjoy the directions the writer is taking this series and I am looking forward to the next book to come out.

At Last - The Elephant in the room is recognized!!
Would you try another book from Kirk Allmond and Laura Bretz and/or Victor Bevine?
Possibly. Either their writing has improved greatly since the first book or my expectation has lowered enough to happy listening to the story.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Once I allowed myself to be OK with superheros and talking zombies I thought that aspect was a nice change. I did not like how the characters could kill thousands of zombies one second and then run from 10 the next.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
It was ok. I had some difficulty with knowing which character was talking because they all sounded similar.
Do you think What Zombies Fear 3: The Gathering needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes.- there already is one. Author has found his steam and there is more story to tell.
    Any additional comments?
Considerable improvement from the first few books.

The Flash, Hulk, Punisher, and Night Crawler fight
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would not have called this a zombie book. The concept of powers from a bite is interesting but I would have used "infected" instead. Still a few too many stretches of faith and how the ignorance of yesterday is "figured out" without any real problem solving - but the second book is better than the last.
Has What Zombies Fear 2: The Maxists turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. It feels like a super hero book not a zombie book.
Did Victor Bevine do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
He did better story telling than the last book. I still had some difficulty relating to the characters - they seemed one dimensional.

    Any additional comments?
I am still going to finish the series. Perhaps if they were bundled together I would not feel as if I was wasting a credit on a 6 hr book..
