If you could sum up Sulan, Episode 1: The League in three words, what would they be?

Possibly beats Divergent!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I really liked Gunner and Taro, but I guess Sulan is my favorite. Her character was very appealing to me. She's a petite genius who didn't want to be defined by that fact and desperately wanted to be tough and able to defend herself. She was relatable, humble, spunky and independant.

Which scene was your favorite?

I really loved the rooftop battle scene, surprisingly. I'm not a battle scene kind of person. I usually get lost in fight descriptions, but so many meaningful things were woven into this one. I could actually see the whole thing in my mind and was completely enthralled by it. Excellent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES!! Who needs sleep? Fantastic story and I may even listen to it again. I had to stop at one point and go look at the narrator's name just so I could remember her in the future. She's really good and deserves credit for her excellent performance!

Any additional comments?

I LOVED the world that Camille Picott created. It was very interesting. Futuristic, but realistic. Kind of exactly what you would logically expect it to be, but never imagine up on your own. It all made sense and seemed so possible. The author has her thumb on the pulse of world events and trends. That was obvious.

Captivating!

Sulan, Episode 1: The League is a different sort of book. I went in expecting a science fiction book but this one was just so much more. It just really caught me up in the story and I found myself completely in love with each step of the story.

The author did an incredible job with world building and character creation, along to go with a plot that was action packed and intense for the full last quarter. The entire novel was easy to soak in and never boring, constantly progressing with character growth as we learned about the world.

Sulan was an excellent character and while a bit too headstrong for her mothers liking, she makes sense.

The lead character was virginal - but her girlfriend took the cake. She was so delightful.

There were a number of places that moved me but when she had to go back in time to see herself die, well it was a trip for sure.

Agree with other review - something missing

I have to agree with the other reviewer I see here. It did feel a lot like something was missing, or not quite right with this book. I didn't dislike it as much as the other reviewer, but definitely was mystified by how it seemed to wander in terms of plot. It seems like there is a lot of character development in the begininning, in fact throughout much of the first half of the novel and then (without wanting to give any spoilers away) it becomes clear that such a large amount of development was needed, the characters don't seem to have the significant role we thought they would and it does not become the character driven story it seems to set out to be. So instead it is relying on the plot, which definitely is neglected in large portions and doesn't seem solidly constructed. I think the story tries to build tension, but somehow misses the mark... It might have helped to have more explanation of the situation on the moon - what is it, where from, why, how, etc... A bit more science, no matter how far fetched, could have helped this work of science fiction/horror.

That said, there is some scary stuff, and some interesting ideas, and personally I liked the ending and thought the narrator did a fine job... So it isn't a waste, just not a brilliant book... Somewhat entertaining, more or less, though flawed, I would say.

Incidentally, on an unconnected side note, I wonder why the other reviewer here apologizes for giving a bad review and claims it is only worth reviewing if you love a book. Granted, everyone seems to mark the review as "not helpful" if it crtitical and glowing reviews always seem better received (no one likes a critic) but I think that a bad review - or even a somewhat critical review, is just as, if not more, important than the good ones. No one likes to be disappointed with a book, and no one likes to feel they wasted a credit or their time... If you think there is a valid reason other than personal taste, or something that might steer a listener away from something they will not enjoy, or even just some insight into what kind of experience you had listening that may help people make better decisions, then do us all a favor and make your case.

perfect - just as described

More Cereal, please!

A great book. Well written, funny, lots of inside jokes that those of a certain age will get. Definitely a storyline that hasn't been beaten to death already - wildly inventive.

This is a good start to what looks like a very good series. This was another birthday gift for a grandson who is not much of a reader but he is making progress on this one.

Sorry, I was not impressed.

I'm sorry to say this story is quite far from the best writing I have read. This book did not have that "wow" factor for me, and I did not find many of the scenes or most of the dialogue compelling. In fact most of the dialogue was overly-simplistic and stilted. I found the narrative distracting at some points when all of the sudden some random fact is mentioned that the (reader) is just supposed to accept as truth when it's not integral to the story and is just inserted like a random detail. The whole premise of time-travelers, conspiracy, government agencies, rougue groups, and scientific experimentation in labs was just not well-formed and fleshed-out. I did not find it convincing. The book finally engaged me a lot more only as I reached the two-thirds or more point in the story. I stuck with it because I had paid for it and also because I don't feel right about reviewing anything I don't finish. I was rewarded with the last one-fourth of the story all of the sudden being a lot more interesting. We finally got to two scenes in particular that grabbed me and engaged my feelings.

The audio production was sorely lacking. The narrator's normal voice was fine to listen to, but the voices he did for some of the characters were completely annoying. The MC's best friend and science-geek is made to sound like he has a septum problem or very heavy sinus congestion (bad cold), and a supposedly highly-educated and highly-esteemed scientist-doctor is voiced to sound as if he's a simple-minded ghoul that belongs in one of my other favorite series. I cannot imagine how anyone thought that was a good production choice. Wrong!

What an Aptly Named Disappointment.

What an aptly named disappointment. If you're looking for a continuation of all the wonderful things happening in the first two installments of this series, than be prepared to get nowhere fast.

Normally I write a brief summary of the book and then an evaluation but I am truly at a loss for a real concrete storyline. Yeah Aden got somewhere with the souls in his head but Showalter spent a majority of the book on Aden's new alter ego and complete character reversals for our two main couples. Everyone changed so drastically so fast that I found myself wondering who are these people and where did the wonderful characters I loved so much go?

When I first picked up Intertwined I was blown away, I mean vampires, werewolves, witches, necromancy, a couple of interesting wildcard paranormals and two love stories, this book has everything I love about the genre. I invested in this intriguing story and got involved with these characters. I looked forward to the continuation of these books every long year. And now I feel like the author just trashed everything I invested in.

I think Gena Showalter is the truly twisted one here. To wait a year for a book that makes me think even the author wasn't happy with the direction so she went completely insane with the characters, extra light on the storyline, and destroyed everything just so she could have a do over.

This book is about 98% filler. I get the idea of Twisted, but with a weak storyline and without the anchor of the characters and romances the fans have grown to like it became muddled and confusing at times. Showalter let go of everything all at once so it was hard to hold on to the bits and pieces I came back for. Just when I find a familiar character or relationship, it's pulled out from under me and I'm left flailing for some point of interest. Twisted was executed poorly and was an unnervingly drastic change from the previous books. I wish the author would have just kept the important parts, left out the weird character developments, and moved on with the story.

As for the audiobook version I was really confused because the main lead character is a guy but the narrator for some reason is a girl. She didn't have any range either.

Sleeping Beauty Sci-Fi Edition

This is a hard book for me to review. Although it is a very light and enjoyable listen it also has some depth and layers to it that will absolutely break your heart.

Its a great story with tons of action and so many twists and turns that I didnt see coming. Not to mention it has a killer ending. Yes folks, this book actually has an ending!

If like YA books like Cinder or Under the Never Sky then you will enjoy this one too.

Amazing Story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

At first, I wasn't such a fan of the narrator. Her voice seemed very old and adult for a 16 year old girl. But as the story went on, I became very drawn to the story.

It was extremely romantic - especially her romance with her first love. So be sure to bring along some tissues when you listen. The end is incredibly tear jerking. There is a sweet ending, or as happy as it could be given the situation.

You can really feel for her sadness and everything that she has lost.

I really enjoyed it, and this is the first YA novel that I've read in a while that actually made me cry.

Haunting, Beautifully Written Story!

This is a superbly written, bittersweet story that has moved and affected me like few others. The characters are full and complex, breathing and coming to life from the pages for us, the reader. I fell in love with Rose and Xavier, and am awed by the author's potrayal of the love between them. The nuances of her writing are sheer art and poetry, unique and fresh amid anything else I've read. She makes your heart ache for the consequences of choices and time lost between them. She makes you feel the characters' emotions and struggles, both internal and external.The ending is mostly satisfying, and completely bittersweet at the same time. For me, the change in dynamic made the relationship between the two main characters a lot more awkward at the end than it was in the beginning. That seemed so unfair, (for them!) but also resonated pretty realistically with me (true to life if such a thing happened in our real world) and I felt the author handled it with grace and good taste. This book is begging for a sequel...and I would have one main question: Can there possibly be more for Xavier's future?...

Brilliant

Absolutely fabulous book - not one to put a big smile on your face, but does ask some big questions. I found it quite difficult to read at times due to the trials and tribulations that some of the characters go through.

The narrator is absolutely fabulous, I really can't say enough good things about him, every voice is differentiated, and at times it's difficult to believe they're all coming from one person. I'd personally have him do all books from now on!

If you've read the knife of never letting go, get this book! It's an amazing sequel. If you haven't read the knife of never letting go, get over there and get it, then come back for this. I'm hooked! Off to read monsters of men.

Keeps the story going

With the characters from the first book and a few new ones the story develops into a battle between fanatics. The theme being you can't trust warmongers - on any side.
