Not quite Harry Potter- but a good magical story :)
The New Savants is a story about young people with special abilities brought together to be trained to use them for good. I thought this was a well written story- and I really appreciated that it was an exceptionally "clean" story. I read a lot of teen lit and I enjoy books about gifted or magical teenagers but I get annoyed when authors include too much bad language, unnecessary violence, or teenage angsty romances. This book had none of those things- just a good introduction to this new series. I gave this 4 stars because I thought the build up to the story took a little longer than necessary- but I'm hopeful that with the backstory out of the way the next book will be more fast paced and a 5 star read :)
    Great idea, plot, and setting
This is a great start to a series, and I hope sequels will soon available, because I'd love to know how the story goes on! True, this is completed, but there is potential for at least one sequel.
It's a wonderful YA story, with magic, and children and youths who are different from what is generally accepted as 'normal'.
The idea is great, and I was hooked from the first to the last sentence -- and I'm way past the YA age!
I imagine this could be a great hit with boys and girls: there's young people who don't belong, who have to hide their special gifts, and suddenly, they realize that they are not alone, that there are others just like them, and that their various skills are useful -- even needed--to protect the society that doesn't want them.
Martin Hillier did a fantastic job narrating the story, he's certainly a narrator to look out for.
The story is fast paced (and much too short, I could have gone on listening), yet there's some character development, at the end of the book you have a clear idea of who is who and what the protagonists' strengths and weaknesses are.
I really hope there'll be sequels.
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audio book by the author, narrator, or publisher.
A fresh take on a classic story line
For lovers of authors such as Rick Riodern this is a must listen.
The moral dilemmas and the feelings of isolation and desire to be accepted are told in a powerful yet entertaining fashion.
This is a must listen for all of those who want to be sure of an entertaining and fun listen.

    An Amazing Sequel
Would you listen to Deny again? Why?
I am already listening to this book again with family. It's for exciting and encouraging. The whole series is a favourite.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the plot twistyness and the way it shows the web of lies spying tends to weave. I also like the interplay between Leith and Renna. Liking each other bu not admitting it.
And I loved the Blade Trainee Jamie Cavendish.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Hard to say. There's a heartwrenching scene that ends with a note of joy that I love so much.
And there's a fun scene where Leith sneaks into Sierra Manor to warn Lady Lorraine.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
When you lie about death, it has a way of coming back.

    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of the "gritty near-future dystopian tale" (Booklist) Hit comes the thrilling sequel about an indentured assassin fighting to survive in a world of anarchy.
The hit list was just the beginning.
    Time to strike back.
After faking her own death to escape her term as an indentured assassin for Valor Savings Bank, Patsy is on the run with her boyfriend, Wyatt. All she wants to do is go home, but that's never going to happen - not as long as Valor's out to get her and the people she loves.
Left with no good choices, Patsy's only option is to meet with a mysterious group that calls itself the Citizens for Freedom.
Led by the charismatic Leon Crane, the CFF seem like just what Patsy has been looking for. Leon promises that if she joins, she'll finally get revenge on Valor for everything they've done to her - and for everything they've made her do.
But Patsy knows the CFF has a few secrets of their own. One thing is certain: They'll do absolutely anything to complete their mission, no matter who's standing in their way. Even if it's Patsy herself.
Delilah S. Dawson brings anarchy and high-octane drama to the next explosive level in this sequel to the "practically movie-ready" (Kirkus Reviews) novel Hit.

young adult dystopia packed with action
Picking up moments after the conclusion of the previous book, Hit, Strike finds Patsy Cline and her boyfriend, Wyatt, on the run with a truckload of laptops containing information on Valor Savings Banks conspiracy to buy out the United States government. They run headlong into the arms of the underground rebellion, the CFF Citizens For Freedom and its militaristic cell leader, Leon Crane. The CFF is composed of those few who are aware of Valors takeover and the demise of US democracy, and their plan is to fight back, no matter the cost. Joined by a handful of other teens on the run from Valor and united by their recent shared history as indentured assassins for the New World Order of Valor Savings, Patsy soon discovers that the CFF has secrets of its own.
As with Hit, author Delilah S. Dawson tells a hard-edged story of young adult dystopia packed with plenty of action, thrills, and more importantly, believable characters. Patsy and Wyatt are a great couple, and its fun to watch their relationship deepen, while Patsy grows into her role as a leader as their circle of friends expands. Theres plenty of paranoia to go around, especially as the teens find their world turned upside down more than once across the duration of Strike, and Dawson presents plenty of solid world-building to flesh out Valors history and plans to take over the nation.
One of the elements that I appreciated the most in both of these books is the setting of rural Georgia. While the threat of Valor is nation-wide, Dawsons choice to place the start of a financial takeover dystopia in the suburbs and backwoods locales of her own backyard in the South provides a brilliant bit of scenery, and a much appreciated change of pace from the usual big-city areas these types of stories are typically set-in. It also helps give Strike a fun little bit of Red Dawn flavor!
Returning to narrate is Rebekkah Ross, whose performance here is a great as it was the first time around. If you liked her work in Hit, and I most certainly did, then youll do just fine with her second turn with these characters in Strike.

    The clock is ticking...
I flew through this story. There were many things to like about it. For starters, the future world that the author creates is very realistic and interesting. The descriptions of the technology and landscapes compared to the world now were really well written. The representation of characters was also refreshing. We had 5 main characters and 4 of them were from different cultures. The story itself was really fast and full of intrigue. The premise was awesome and usually I don't listen to time travel books that move forward only back in time. There is so much to like about this book past and future that I fear I don't have enough room to speak about it. I liked how the morals and ideals of the author were present in the future and the way the story plays out is simply amazing. The narration was amazing as well. Erin Spencer is quickly becoming one of my favorites. This was my second performance by her and she keeps getting better. This is a great coming of age tale, with a lot of mystery and intrigue, sprinkle a little love and you got the making of a great series. Nice job. I recommend this one for sure! Sometimes the truth should be kept secret, muah haha
    Very entertaining, fast-paced read!
Really good read/listen, ladies and gentlemen.
Elena has an eidetic memory, no job prospects because no one wants to hire young inexperienced Mexicans even to a sh*tty restaurant, and only two months before she is forced to the streets from her foster home. And all she wants is a decent future. A university degree, a job as a social worker, that sort of thing... Then comes an offer she can't refuse - a ridiculous amount of money for one day of work in a confidential, super secret project in a powerful corporation.
Saying yes means meeting another 4 participants with their unique talents - Trent with his lockpicks, a mechanic, Chris, a young genius, Adam and an incredible artist, Zoe, who can draw from memory in minute detail. Saying yes means going into the future for 24 hours and reporting back everything they would see or hear or do.
There are only two rules: get back to the portal in time and do not look up what would happen in your own future. *smirks* We are talking about a bunch of 17-year old! When do they ever follow rules?
Things go wrong from the very beginning in a futuristic city of Los Angeles. The team is forced to look into their future, and what they find shocks them to the core.

    Language: English
    Release date: 03-24-16

    Publisher's Summary:
Laney Harris thinks there might be monsters in Fairy, Texas.
    She's right.
When her mother remarried and moved them to a town where a date meant hanging out at the Sonic, Laney figured that "boring" would have a whole new meaning. A new stepsister who despised her and a high school where she was the only topic of gossip were bad enough. But when she met the school counselor (and his terminal bad breath), she grew suspicious. Especially since he had wings that only she could see. And then there were Josh and Mason, two gorgeous glimmering-eyed classmates whose interest in her might not be for the reasons she hoped. Not to mention that dead guy she nearly tripped over in gym class.
Boring takes on an entirely new dimension in Fairy, Texas.
If she's going to survive in this small town, she'll have to learn to wing it.

    Great YA story
I received this book for free for an honest and unbiased review
I like Margo's style of writing. The pacing was good, there was action, love, mystery snarkiness and paranormal -- everything I love!!
So Laney's mom gets remarried to John and now Laney has a new step dad and a stepsister who she can't stand, not to mention that her mom goes out of town a lot so she's stuck with them for long periods of time.
2 guys start to become really interested in Laney (Mason and Josh) but for romantic reasons or other??
Laney starts to notice strange things at her new high school in Fairy Texas starting with her counselor who had rancid breath, we soon find out why and what these people are and the plot they play with Laney and the Journey she goes on. This seems like a one and done book but I would love it if they made a sequel or a series. I would read them all.
The narrator did an amazing job, especially for having to read for teenagers. I would also listen to this narrator again too.
I would recommend this book and author to my friends
    Happy Reading/Listening!!!
    Something's Strange In Texas
Margo Bond Collins has written a superb story! I really enjoyed this story. I am quite sure that this will be the only story in this series because of the ending. It didn't have any cliffhangers so I assume this is it. If I were the author I would've taken this story much further. This story could've made a great series. I liked that she used a dual POV as well. I really enjoyed it from start to finish!
The narrator, Melissa Moran kept me immersed from start to finish. I did have a little problems with her female voices, like the female couches voice. I'm not sure why it needed to be so manly but it didn't hurt the story at all. I will be looking for other stories that this narrator has done. Overall, I give it a 5 star rating!
Interesting & different twist on Fairies,or Demons
Which character as performed by Melissa Moran was your favorite?
I loved Laney as she's the voice of the story. But I look at the overall story telling with the characters by the narrators.
Melissa displays all emotions with enough emphasis that we feel them in the voice of Laney and others. Laney's sarcasm feels so genuine as if slips off the tongue of the narrator. Melissa has to have a strong southern accent to fit a book placed in Texas. She does. Not all characters have the accent and those that do, she shows the influence of the southern swing of their voice.

War rages everywhere, and Morgan is caught in the middle in the haunting conclusion of The Internment Chronicles, from the New York Times best-selling author of The Chemical Garden trilogy.
The city is falling out of the sky. Morgan always thought it was just a saying. A metaphor. The words of the dying. But as they look up at the floating island that was their home, Pen and Morgan make a horrible discovery - Internment is sinking. And it's all Morgan's fault.
Corrupted from the inside by one terrible king and assailed from the outside for precious resources by another, Internment could be destroyed because Morgan couldn't keep a secret. As two wars become one, Morgan must find a way to bring her two worlds together to stop the kings that wage them. Or face the furthest fall yet.

    Love This Author!
I love this author, although she is an "acquired taste." After reading The Chemical Garden series, I had to have more and found The Internment Chronicles. Ms. DeStefano is a brilliant wordsmith. She also has a knack for allowing the reader to be fully immersed within the protagonist. She does it gradually, however, until you are so invested in the main character that you have to follow the story through. It seems to happen around midway through the second book for me. This kind of characterization takes time and pages, but it is worth it. So many dystopian authors feel like there has to be an incident or cliff-hanger every chapter to keep you reading... It makes for some excitement but, like popcorn, you put it down easily once you are over-filled. Don't take me wrong, this author is not boring by any means; her style is just a bit more patient and realistic. It took me an entire week to get over finishing the Garden series; the characters would not leave me and I mourned them. Now that I have finished Broken Crowns, I know that I must also process losing these people, as well. Ms. DeStefano never takes the easy way out; she examines humanity full-on, blemishes and all. I cannot wait for her next book!
    I love this series
I love this series. Lauren DeStefano is one of my favorite authors - I loved the Chemical Garden's series and this one did not disappoint. I finished the last book in a night, I couldn't put it down!
    Five Stars
Another great read. I can't wait for the next â
    Three Stars
Good book but open endings drive me nuts.
    Good conclusion!
    3.5/5 stars
Broken Crowns is the final book in The Internment Chronicles trilogy. There will be some spoilers from the first two books.
This trilogy is narrated by Morgan, a teenage girl from Internment (the floating kingdom in the sky). She and her friends left their home and went to the ground (as they call it).
This book picks up right where the last book left off. On the ground there is still a war between the kingdoms of Havalais and Dastor. There is still no word from Internment (floating city in the sky). King Ingram (king of Havalais) left and took Princess Celeste with him. Pen had discovered that Internment's soil contained the Phosane the King needed.
In Broken Crowns Pen discovers something new and this discovery plays an important part in the final book.
When I started this final book I really wanted to know what was happening on Internment. It is hard when Morgan is the only narrator. Because everything we learn must come from her perspective.

A Good Story That Needed a Different Narrator
I've listened to other work by EMILIE J. HOWARD and I like her writing. FAOLAN: THE YOUNGER YEARS was a good story but hard to follow because of the narration. I think a female reader would've been better for this, especially if this is the beginning of a new series. It may be better to read the physical book.
NICHOLAS SANTASIER'S narration was fairly monotone and with misplaced voice inflections it made this hard to follow. He has a deeper voice and his female impressions didn't resonate well. I suspect he would be good in a different setting using his natural voice. I felt lost throughout most of the story.

    Enjoyable and Informative
I have to admit I didn't know much about Viking Mythology (other than the basics) but I learned a lot and enjoyed this story. Faolan seems like a spunky girl from the very beginning and we follow her as she grows. Emilie J. Howard is an author whose work I really like, and I'm sure the other books in this particular series will not disappoint. The narrator did a pretty good job with different voices - not the best, but certainly not the worst I've heard.

    Members Reviews:
This is pretty darn good story
This is pretty darn good story, and it flies along at a nice fast pace. I'm not exactly sure how to rate children's stories, whether based on my own image of what a children story should be (I don't really have a clear idea of that, I never read books of this nature when I was a kid), or compared to the historical, theological, or generally more adult themed books I normally read. Neither seem very fair, so I went with what I think it deserves for what it is: 4 stars for good, clean, fun.
Jet's story continues, there are more children being kidnapped, hence, more children to rescue. With the help of his friends, Balance (an alien computer), and some cool tech inherited from his grandfather, he does just that.
Meanwhile his father - long believed dead - has gone to Balance's home world to recover from some old injuries, and check things out in the hopes of bringing his family as well. There are the obvious themes of good and evil throughout the book, but there is a lot of Christian analogy in the scenes that take place on Balance's planet. It's rather pretty well done, not very subtle, though it might go over the heads of younger children. We also get more back story for Balance and Serenity and their relationship.
Our villain, Dr. Drexler suffers from Evil Overlord syndrome, he can't stop monologuing, sees his enemies as puny weaklings, and hires idiot minions.
The production quality is fairly average, there are a couple places where the narrator whispers, and the overall sound of his voice changed a bit, but on the whole, it's consistent. Every word is easily understood. No music.
The writing is rather of the sensational style, which works pretty well for a children's story, and Ray Greenley amplifies it. I'm still not sure how I feel about his narration. His voices for minor characters get a little repetitive, though I never lost track of who was talking. He does a good job keeping all the characters distinct, but a couple of his voices are on the weird side.
All in all, I'm still up for finishing the series.

    Publisher's Summary:
The children of dragons and humans, the dracons, control eighty percent of the world's governments. Humans worldwide are either subservient or prey. On the small vacation island of Mabi, humans call for war.
Sixteen year old Dakota Kekoa lives a double life. By day, she pretends to be a human to infiltrate Mabi Academy, a 'humans only' high-school. At night, she works as a henchman for her draconic mafia family, utilizing her ability to steal and manipulate emotions.
When Dakota's human friend is kidnapped, she takes on the mission to find her. This is not just any mission though; she is diving head first into the escalating conflict between humans and dracons. As more girls disappear and some are discovered dead, Dakota realizes her first honorable mission may also be her last.

    Great start to the series
A fast paced, captivating story set in a very unique world. Dragons have broken through from their fire realm and bred with humans to create Dracons, who have various magical aspects and now rule most of the world, but conflict with the humans is about to erupt. The strong female lead, Dekota, is easy to connect with and the authors writing and great narration allows you to feel her struggles, sorrows, fears and heart. She is willing to fight to protect those she cares for and her unique ability with souls adds a interesting aspect to the story. In some ways she is somewhat of an anti-hero as she works as an enforcer for her "crime lord" Grandfather, spying and manipulating souls but you still cannot help but like and empathize with her. Wyvern, the half-dragon male protagonists, is somewhat of a controlling jerk, but them again he is not human. His character grows on you as the book progresses and I found myself routing for him at the end of the book. While his attitudes and actions are ultra domineering, he still accepts and listens when Dekota takes a stance (even though this is in opposition to Dragon ways.) While a love triangle does exist in this book it does not overwhelm the plot but rather it adds to the intrigue. I enjoyed all the characters in this story, many of which had novel and unexpected aspects and the narration fit well with their personalities and enhanced the overall story. This well written and narrated book has many twists in the plot that keeps you turning the pages. I will look forward to the continuation of the story in the next book. I received this audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review
the storyline was dynamic and exciting.

It features 16-year-old Dakota Kekoa as she navigates the politics of the dragon, dragon-blooded human or Dracon, and human communities. While only 16, Dakota, a Dracon, has been working undercover for her grandfather, a powerful Dracon and businessman, to infiltrate the human community by pretending to be a human student at a high school. The rest of the time, she uses her Dracon-given powers to manipulate the emotions of her grandfathers enemies to bend them to his will. In addition to these responsibilities, Dakota assumes the responsibility of both providing for her wayward, human mother and sisters as well as keeping their need for support a secret from her Dracon grandfather.
