I participated in the Climate Marathon Virtual Run recently in October, where we were supposed to clock 42km for each week throughout the month. My ankle has been giving me problems for a few months already but I still decided to participate in the virtual run because bringing awareness to climate change is a meaningful cause to me. Even so, I was apprehensive, not knowing whether I can pull this feat off...

Many of us grew up with the mentality that doing well in school and getting a good job, earning a good salary equates to success. That's how our society and our environment shaped our mindset as we grew up. We learnt the concept of failure in school when failing exams resulted in negative consequences, such as additional supplementary lessons, getting enrolled in tuition classes, etc. We saw how the top academic performers were praised as the cream of the crop and the promise of having successful lives and careers as scholars. As a result, when we became adults, we become fearful of failing. We know the feeling of shame and how others will judge us when we "failed" in something. This fear ultimately caused many people to stay in their comfort zones, and not pursue their dreams. Some just give up too soon or find excuses not to continue after a few tries. Why? Because stepping out of our comfort zones bring unfamiliarity, and it doesn't always produce positive, desirable results at the first few tries! This feeling of unfamiliarity can be scary for some. 

Have we have forgotten how relentless we used to be when we were babies? We weren't afraid of falling when we were learning to walk. We tried over and over, that's why we gradually learnt how to stand, how to walk, and how to run. If we never dared to try, we will never reach our goals. This fear of failing has killed many dreams and limited the great potential of many people. Many die without even finding out what they are capable of.

I grew up as a typical Singaporean guy, who thought nothing more, other than fitting into societal norms. I had no dreams. I just thought it is normal to take the path taken by most: Finish studies, get a job, buy a flat, start a family, etc. I was simply existing. However, life threw me a huge curveball and my first job ended badly. That's SUPER PAINFUL. It created a HUGE hit on my confidence. Despite obtaining a degree with distinction, it didn't guarantee career success for me. I realized that life is much more than studying and getting employed.
