Do you know somebody that has hurt themselves playing touch footy or volleyball on the beach? What about throwing a ball or a frisbee for the dogs? Is this person you?
Would you be able to react to a threat rapidly, and escape potential danger by jumping out of the way of an out of control vehicle, or sprinting away from a would-be mugger?
You don't need to be an athlete to reap the massive benefits of speed and power based training...and you also don't need to dedicate entire training sessions to it.
Simply add it to the end of your warm-up, as a transition into your main exercises in your already established training regime.
Use it or lose it.
This principle states that if you don't practice something, or use a specific ability, you will lose the ability to do that thing. We don't stop moving when we grow old, we grow old when we stop moving.
Thank me later!

"I shouldn’t be in the position I am right now."
The odds were stacked against me:
● Poor family on welfare, eldest of 6 kids, parents didn’t work, abusive step-dad, no electricity or running water for a 6 years period of my life
● Caught up with the wrong crowd, stealing, drugs, skipping school
● At 14 years old, I sat on a bus for 3 days with $50 in my pocket, to travel to the next State over West, to begin a new life in the workforce - 2000

I have just returned from a three week road trip around Thailand.
I covered roughly 5400kms in my car over the last few weeks, and in this episode, I reflect on how grateful I am to be able to travel within the country, cover the sites and experiences that I encountered along the way, and how I always appreciate getting home into my own space, and the environment I've created to be able to live my best life.

I've had so many great conversations with friends and colleagues about what we see happening in the fitness industry, and thought to myself, "I wish we would have recorded that."
...So that's exactly what the Coaches Corner is about.
Join me for the third part of a conversation I had with my mate Marshall, of Anvil Training and Development, as we discuss how important it is to understand where you are in the "Four Stages of Learning" model, to allow you to train, and reinforce good quality movement patterns.
Please note that the original conversation went for about 75 - 80 minutes, so I recommend listening to the entirety of the conversation as I drip feed it over the next few weeks, to understand the full context.

"I hit rock bottom in my early twenties after succumbing to drug addiction, but managed to set myself straight after finding a sweaty salvation in the Muay Thai training camps of Thailand. Since those demon days I have gone on to climb the highest mountain on 6 continents, brave minus 60 degree temperatures in Antarctica, and have been held captive in the jungles of West Papua. I have witnessed death before my eyes on the highest peaks and have healed my mind with an ocean row across the Atlantic Ocean, setting a new world record.
In a recent expedition, I dragged a cart containing all of my food and water across 1800 km of the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, becoming the first Australian male to do so. I have found comfort in suffering while on adventures and it feels as if I have lived ten lifetimes, yet I am only just getting started."
Luke Richmond is a coach, an athlete, an adventurer, and a two-time author.
In this interview, we discuss his journey through life, including service with the Australian Army as an infantry soldier, battling drug addiction, training and coaching in Thailand, and his many adventures and expeditions that have seen him face more adversity than most people will ever experience in their lifetime.
Luke is the author of two books:
One Life One Chance (which is his life motto)
Vodka and Sandstorms

This time six years ago I was hiking the Annapurna circuit in Nepal. Just a couple of days prior to flying to Nepal, a freak blizzard hit and hordes of hikers got caught at Thorung La pass at 5416m. Due to altitude sickness and other reasons, some of these people pushed on to descend the mountain, and basically walked into the storm.
43 people lost their lives.
It was surreal to be in the same location just 2 weeks after the tragedy, dealing with my own altitude sickness whilst descending down the mountain, passing packs and clothes and other belongings of those who perished.
Off in the distance was a helicopter struggling through the thin air at that altitude, which I had assumed was helping with the recovery effort. We found out later that day that the helicopter was there to retrieve a hiker suffering from altitude sickness, who later died.
Due to the uncharacteristic blizzard for that time of the year, the pass had been cut off just days before we summited, and there was snow covering everything. The scenery was stunning and there were not many hikers to share the trail with.
These unique, yet unfortunate circumstances allowed me to be one of only a few people to hike the circuit and see the beautiful landscape with an unusual amount of snow on the ground for that time of the year, making for an absolutely stunning backdrop that constantly took my breath away (literally and figuratively).
To this day, this was one of the most impactful and beautiful places I have visited.
It is crazy to think that the very thing that caused so much sadness and grief, was also the very same thing that made this such an amazing hike for those that followed.
RIP to those who were lost on the mountain.
Shout out to the amazing people in our group that I was fortunate enough to meet, and share the beauty of the Himalayas with, in one of my most memorable and favourite adventures.

First of all, apologies for the audio quality in this episode.
I have just embarked on a three week road trip around Thailand, and unfortunately, had to record this episode whilst I was driving out of Phuket, (where I live) whilst it was hammering down with rain.
I do bring some quality content however, on some of the most effective techniques that I've used over the many years of travel, to keep myself in shape, whilst on the road, using minimal equipment.

In this episode, I speak with athlete, coach and adventurer, Elise Richmond.
Elise has worked in the fitness industry since 2009. Her career in personal training has taken her around the world, and provided the opportunity for her to pursue her own athletic endeavours.
She has dabbled in body building, is a 2 x CrossFit Regionals Athlete, has crossed Mongolia's Gobi desert on foot, Kayaked Australia's largest river, the Murray river, and has just returned from cycling across Australia.
Elise and I speak about numerous topics, but everything comes back to living a life of minimising the bullshit, and creating your own memories, stories and individual journey that bring you fulfillment.
