  • 264: Attack Work-Life Balance and ATTCK Marketing
Today we discuss Work-Life Balance with the ATTCK Marketing man himself, Dennis Plucinik!

Dennis Plucinik, ATTCK’s founder, started his company with the goal of doing things right. He’d spent years in the digital advertising world, where work and personal life blend into one and “work hard, play hard together” means never leaving the office—and having colleagues for drinking buddies. He found himself wondering if a company with a different kind of work culture could succeed. An environment free from stressful deadlines, late nights, weekends, and the myriad other reasons why great people quit their jobs.

Quote: "If you like doing what you do, then you never work a day."

Dennis wanted to create a workplace where tasks get done during work hours only, and where employees don’t feel guilty for leaving at 6 PM. ATTCK takes on the projects that Dennis and the ATTCK team feel are best suited for them—projects that bring in more than just money.

    Top 3 Hot Points:
    1. A new way of organizational structure.
    2. Healthy lifestyle commitments and beating opioid addiction.
    3. Work-Life Balance, like what you do.

[spp-tweet tweet="How do you attack your own Work-Life balance?! ATTCK Your Marketing too! @DennisPlucinik "]

    Final Words:

How are people approaching their life? What do they want to get out of it? What I'm trying to do is just to be happy with the decisions that I make. I think that's an important set of principles to live by. So, you know, if you understand yourself, you understand things that make you happy, and what you really want out of it. For me, that's surrounding myself with people who produce great work. I absolutely love what I do. I think that's also very important to know.

It sometimes doesn't feel like work, right? But that's like the old cliche, it doesn't feel like work. If you like doing what you do, then you never work a day. It's not totally true, things get very difficult on hard days. If you find something that you're absolutely passionate about, it'll drive you through. It'll carry you through those hard times. So find something that you love doing and be passionate about it. It's not easy to do. It took me a long time to be able to do this.

It's worth it in the end.

On This Episode You Will Hear:
    • [spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction
    • [spp-timestamp time="10:00"] It's a very sort of flat organizational structure. So it's meant to say a couple of things. Everybody here supports each other equally. When you're focused on one person, the whole company is focused on that one person. It's a little deep. That literally was the theory before we built this. I love it. It's very creative!
    • [spp-timestamp time="20:00"] If I'm not sure about something or not confident I can carry it through, I won't do it. I don't gamble, I don't play blackjack or anything else. I think I gambled with the surgery I had, I most likely didn't need in the end. Turns out I didn't need it. But I couldn't gamble and did it anyway. I didn't want this to come up 10 years later and say, oh we actually didn't get everything and now you're gonna die. I just didn't want to gamble that. So that's sort of my MO, I've got to be certain about what I'm doing.
    • [spp-timestamp time="29:30"] I had some pretty serious neuropathy, which is nerve damage to your extremities, incredibly painful. The only solution was a couple of solutions that are not really perfect. The long and short of it is that as a result of the surgery, I ended up getting very quick addicted to opioids like within two weeks. So I have a really close experience with that and it's very scary. It was effective but it's incredibly addictive. I can see how it's such a huge epidemic because you can have easy access to that stuff.
    • [spp-timestamp time="40:00"] People who tie working success to the quantity of hours, I'm against it. There's quality versus quantity. Right? We have very specific ways of tracking progress and development projects. We get really nerdy on this idea. We use a system to track basically hours efficiency and call it a Velocity of Tracks that Delta. What you estimated your time would take versus what it would actually take.

  • 263: Endurance Psychology, Iron Cowboy, Mental Fortitude, and Free Solo
Today's Episode is a Part II from Dr. Megan Cannon's episode 261. We dig deeper into the Endurance Psychology Mindset, the Iron Cowboy, the Free Solo documentary, and more:

Megan has been working with many school sports teams on mindset preparation. Today we dig into the swimming team(s) and much more. She talks to our audience regularly, about many high-value topics such as health, fitness, mindset, and Sports Psychology. Specializing as a Sports Psychologist, Megan brings a wealth of mindset psychology and a whole lot more to our show. Listen in while we catch up with Dr. Megan Cannon Ph.D.!

Quote: He who has their why to live for can bear almost any how!

    - James Lawrence aka The Iron Cowboy

Today’s shorter podcast is a Part II, following our newer short form with Dr. Megan Cannon. She’s gotten busier, as have I, so we now are recording back to back episodes to be paired off of each other. Our new mindset pump format is trying to stay around 30 minutes or less. Let’s see how you, the listeners, like the performance and knowledge we can cram into these newer 30-minute episodes!

    Top 3 Hot Points:
    1. Endurance Mindset Psychology
    2. The Power of Your Why
    3. Powerful Mindset Shifts

[spp-tweet tweet="He who has their WHY to live for can bear almost any how! @ironcowboyjames  You Too Can LIVETHEFUEL! #ironcowboy @drmegancannon "]

    Final Words:

I don't think we can beat anything outside of the iron cowboys quote of "He who has their why to live for can bear almost any how". That, I think encompasses not only the pushing through the pain, the power of the mind, the mental preparation and just the power of giving that attention to mindset and that preparation. That component of things whether it's pushing through a big business project, making a big decision, or pushing through pain at a race or in a practice. If you have identified why and "what am I doing this for", you really can withstand so much more. It's just the power of that mind motivation.

Our Skiing Themed Wedding of Heliskiing, Backcountry Cat-Skiing, and more in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada:

This is a quick and short, special podcast episode to reflect on our return from our #HELIYES heliskiing wedding. That's right, I actually got married! Dr. Kristen Fenstermacher VMD of All Points Equine and I, Scott Mulvaney of LIVETHEFUEL said "I DO" the only way we know how... on an adventure skiing in the Canadian Rockies baby!!!

Live The Fired Up Epic Life! - Quoted: Scott Mulvaney

    Top 3 Hot Points:
    1. Our ski wedding hashtag is #HELIYES
    2. We highly recommend backcountry skiing!
    3. RK Heliski and Great Northern Snowcat Skiing are epic!

    Final Words:

I've been ripping the lid off here this year, we've got my first book coming out soon, a little story of some of the lessons I learned from the Hotshot Wildland Firefighting world. So that'll be coming out when I can get it there. I'm still finishing editing on that, so that's taken longer than I expected.

On This Episode You Will Hear:
    • [spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction
    • [spp-timestamp time="04:00"] We're not all hardcore skiers, it's all about that deep, fluffy, amazingly powdery snow. That was the theme of our wedding, it was hey guys, let's go have an adventure. Let's do some heliskiing. Let's rock out and have a good time.
    • [spp-timestamp time="09:30"] We rocked out some serious old school and amazing onesie ski suits. Mine was three different shades of purple and blue. I'm quite proud of it and I'm not getting rid of it. I spent $150US on eBay for that bad boy and it is in mint condition.
    • [spp-timestamp time="10:45"] So we went skiing for a couple of days after heliski and then we had a Snowcat skiing trip booked, which was awesome! Normally they're actually using them to groom the ski slopes or open up remote mountain roads, but they actually mount big metal boxes on the back of them and so you can carry people. So instead of flying you into the backcountry like we did the first week. We had them drive us up into the backcountry in and around where they were based in a remote part of British Columbia.
    • [spp-timestamp time="15:30"] Luckily my lung and rib muscles held up and I was able to do a lot of crazy stuff. I was not at my full physical fitness level but still pulled everything off that I could. Now that I'm back, it's time to do some riding because I got some training ahead. Come this July I'll be doing my first 100-mile mountain biking race of all things, the Wilderness 101 aka W101.
    • [spp-timestamp time="17:00"] The wedding ring I bout is a black zirconium, wrapped in elk antler bone, inlayed with a ring of brown teak wood. I got this from manlybands.com

    3. The Mental Game Plan.

[spp-tweet tweet="Get your Mental Game Prep going! You Too Can LIVETHEFUEL! @drmegancannon "]

    Final Words:

I think it's just starting to pay attention to your mental game plan. That doesn't start the day of trying to do an Ironman, I'm not going to just go do that tomorrow, right? I'm going to train and I'm going to prepare. As long as you're doing the physical preparation, think about the mental preparation and not only those things from what we've discussed of sleep and making those unknowns, known. Even on that day of competing or whatever business you are doing, have that mental game plan and preparation there as well.

    • [spp-timestamp time="15:30"] There's the Parkland Swimming Team vs the Parkland area Swim Club team, two different things. Then there is the Nazareth teams, they have a high school program but then they also have a club program as well.

Helping Companies and Individuals Tune In ToLifter Leadership:

From TEDx Hong Kong to his home in southern California, Paresh Shah loves to

help others see the light of Lifter Leadership. Lifters can be anyone from the receptionist that brightens everyone’s day, to the call center rep who knows exactly how to listen and make an angry customer a raving fan, to senior executives and CEOs who understand that by aligning purpose with profit and consciousness, they can create 10 times the performance relative to peers, according to the Harvard Business Review.

Lifter Leadership is what organizations have been waiting for to motivate today’s unengaged worker, innovate to solve some of our biggest problems, avoid being disrupted and serve a demanding set of customers and workers with high standards for integrity, authenticity, and value for all humans on the planet.

Paresh is the Lifter behind this movement.

A classically trained chef and a graduate of the Institute of Culinary Education, Jennifer is also a certified yoga teacher, a certified Reiki practitioner, and a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. She is the best-selling author of 50 Shades of Kale and The Healing Slow Cooker, among 22 other books.

She has also generated thousands of articles, blog posts and recipes for publications such as SELF, Yoga Journal, Health Monitor, Parents, Prevention, In Style, People, First For Women, AOL/Huffington Post and Livestrong and currently works as an integrative health coach through her program Just Eat Smarter.

Quote: Do one thing every day that scares you. - Jennifer Iserloh

In addition, she has worked with both integrative and functional medicine doctors to produce their books and healthy eating programs, learning the science behind healing foods.

After graduating with honors from the Institute of Culinary Education in 2003, she worked in kitchens throughout Manhattan as well as interning with cookbook authors like Tyler Florence of the Food Network where she learned recipe development first hand.

Shortly after, she pursued a career as a private chef for the following three years and worked in the homes of exclusive clientele such as Annie Leibovitz, Susan Sontag, and Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld. Throughout her hectic restaurant and private cheffing career, she maintains a strong yoga and meditation practice which enabled her to stay strong in a highly competitive field.

Searching for a spiritual practice where she could incorporate her knowledge of healing foods and specifically cooking technique, she was led to investigate the wonders of ancient alchemy.

Through alchemy, and her studies with the Alchemy Guild, she shares her knowledge on how to combine spiritual practice with activities in the kitchen and beyond.

Apart from her books, television appearances and writings, Iserloh continues to empower people to take a greater role in their holistic health and enjoy life more.

    Top 3 Hot Points:

    2. The Healthy Balance of Alchemy
    3. Superfood Cooking and Slow Cooker Fun

[spp-tweet tweet="Working with Superfood Nutrition with Body and Soul Alchemy with Jennifer Iserloh! You Too Can LIVETHEFUEL! @livethefuel "]

    Final Words:

I just want people to have to be able to heal themselves, people that are suffering, need to understand that you have to heal holistically to really heal properly. So that's why Mind-Body Medicine is such a huge platform for me, and why support functional and integrative medicine.

I work with these amazing healers and doctors. That's what I want to teach people because I didn't really heal from my illnesses until I heal them in the body and the emotions that are in the mindset. When you do that, you adjust your energy, everything goes up so that you can follow what your life's purpose is. and, or just, you know, have a happy family life. Just enjoy your life.

People are starting to understand that this is what lifestyle medicine is, it is for medicine as holistic health. But you just have to make sure you're doing it the correct way, that you're not giving weight to one more than another. In traditional medicine, they think it's all about the body. Now, with what we've learned through science, spiritual practices, mindset, the special plant foods, I call the plant healers that heal people, it's got to be done in tandem. You gotta have each part equal, you know, equal player and band-aids.

He's so brilliant he's like you are with the doctor of the future and he says it over and over and over again. He's totally into the hardcore geek out stuff but he's really into the mindset. One, just as a heads up for future info coming up, I'm going to meet with the Fit Chick, Selene Yeager of Bicycling Magazine. Selene is one of those chicks that I've known for many, many years as long as I've been in the Lehigh Valley.

I thought of this as we were talking day and I would say, "GET OUT OF YOUR OWN HEAD". That's my big comment for today, "GET OUT OF YOUR OWN HEAD. We sit around and worry about the 10,000 things going wrong. Take the steps and do the two things you know you can do right. Don't engulf yourself in all of the bullshit that's going on. There's so much of it. Trust me. I could talk for 10 podcasts in a row about some of the stuff I got going on.

    • [spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction
    • [spp-timestamp time="09:30"] Black Ice Adventures. This was a bad one, I laid off the gas and was going to go through it pretty mellow. When I hit it, my truck disappeared literally the ass started coming around. In my pickup, Steve's both arms went, one grabbed the console, the next one is out the window. I got the infamous Willie's in my stomach.
    • [spp-timestamp time="15:00"] This day being a like a chronic reader and whatever, I still am yet to figure out 100%. Anybody looks at overweight people and thinks they have a weight problem, an eating problem, whatever. Quite often it's not. That's not the problem. That's the solution to their problems.
    • [spp-timestamp time="18:30"] Along came this event called the Wilderness 101. When I first started reading about this I thought you had to be a special kind of idiot to even consider this. A long long time ago when I was hardcore, it might have been as far as 10 years ago, it was a Leesburg Bakers Dozen Race.
    • [spp-timestamp time="25:00"] Sharing the right stories, maybe they could click with some people, clearly, that clicked with him. He just needed a goal.
    • [spp-timestamp time="30:00"] Wilderness 101 continued. I know exactly the first hill and every one thereafter for the next 40 some miles. I have a much better understanding as to the type of training that needs to be involved.

    Final Words:

I'd like the listeners to go to TerryWahls.com/diet and get that one-page handout that is a really great summary of the key concepts of the Wahls Diet. You can put that on your refrigerator and they'll help you restructure your approach to food and what this really is.

A goal of nine cups of vegetables/greens, sulfur-rich, color-rich, and some clean meat. A lot of great oil such as olive oil or flax oil hemp oil but this is a great pyramid to get you started in terms of how to think about food.

On This Episode You Will Hear:
    • [spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction
    • [spp-timestamp time="05:00"] I have multiple sclerosis. diagnosed in 2000. Being an academic Doc, I sought out the best people got the best treatments and ended up converting into the progressive phase of the illness. By 2007. I couldn't really sit up anymore. I was struggling to walk, had severe fatigue, brain fog and I had severe episodes of trigeminal neuralgia. That is terrible pain and that's when I had started after four years, in my wheelchair, doing my own research on the basic science what I could do. I started with supplements to support my mitochondria, which helped reduce my fatigue a little bit, I adapted the Paleo Diet really soon after.
    • [spp-timestamp time="06:00"] I discovered the Institute for functional medicine took their course under protection had a deeper understanding of what I could do more supplements. Then I had this really big aha moment. I should redesign my diet based on the supplements based on the ancestral health principles on functional medicine. So it's still a paleo diet but much less meat, more vegetables, and it was dramatic the speed of which my pain resolved. My mental clarity resolved, my fatigue resolved, I began walking again. I would ultimately go back to biking and was able to do an 18.5-mile bike ride 12 months after getting up out of that wheelchair.
    • [spp-timestamp time="10:00"] There's an excessive level of toxins which might be solvents, pesticides, or heavy metals. Then there's a hormonal imbalance, so that's true if you have depression, psychosis, schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, early cognitive decline dementia memory loss associated with diabetes. Also, memory loss associated with mercury poisoning or chronic fungal poisoning.
    • [spp-timestamp time="15:15"] The best test is a test that can look at your species plus the genes plus all the metabolites plus your DNA to tell you can you run all the chemistry that needs to happen? A lot of detail, that's a lot of detail commercially, those products aren't yet readily available.
    • [spp-timestamp time="21:00"] In 2020 we will be analyzing our data, comparing the impact of adopting the Wahl Diet or a highly structured Paleolithic diet. This looks like a little less meat, many more vegetables, sort of a hybrid between Paleo and Mediterranean.
    • [spp-timestamp time="30:00"] People are afraid to state that you can reverse disease. What is your position? So my position is the root cause of much of the chronic disease, whether it's diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, mental health issues, this is this cellular dysfunction. So if I provide nutritional support at the cellular level, it can be hard to predict how much repair is possible.
    • [spp-timestamp time="40:00"] The internet is a wonderful tool. It helps us learn more rapidly, both the good, wonderful things and unfortunately, some very terrible, hateful things as well. It allows change to happen much, much more rapidly. It amplifies human nature, the wonderful parts of human nature and the less wonderful parts as well.
    • [spp-timestamp time="50:00"] If your physician is not fired up about you eating more vegetables... get a new one. If they aren't fired up about you wanting to move more... fire them.

    Final Words:

First, I think if you're listening to the podcast, you probably have an interest in health and performance and being the next level you wouldn't be otherwise you'd be watching something distracting. So first I want to honor that.

Second I want to say is be willing to experiment, be willing to take steps you can always on to nowadays you can usually find someone that's already been down that pathway that you want to experiment with and you can see if that works for you. I think that's a great tool.

Third, always keep learning because the game keeps changing all the time.

Then the final piece I would say is don't underestimate the power of fixing your digestive system. My business partner is a ketogenic guy, I'm a vegetarian, we're both as far off the spectrum of mutual formats or dietary choices. We're dietary agnostic, and what I mean by that is that I think that everybody should choose the diet that works for their lifestyle, their genetics, and epigenetics. Remain flexible enough that they're willing to spend a bit of time experimenting with other things in order to see if there's something they might be able to add from some other perspective as opposed to narrowly attacking other people because they're doing something that's right for them, which I think is so asinine.

On This Episode You Will Hear:
    • [spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction
    • [spp-timestamp time="10:00"] The good news is if you're not happy with where things have led you to this point, all you have to realize is that you need to take yourself and the seed of potential and plug it into a different environment.
    • [spp-timestamp time="20:45"] What's interesting is almost every person that I've interviewed, has produced something really cool or has gone through some sort of extreme challenge or transformation in their home life.
    • [spp-timestamp time="30:00"] There is significant evidence that we've got major issues right now. For example, 12% of the hospital visits right now are related to gastrointestinal illness.
    • [spp-timestamp time="39:30"] I think the Surgeon General said that 90% of the illnesses that are being treated in hospital today's are actually lifestyle-related illnesses. The problem is that the environment is so toxic to that person and that person is so poorly educated in fact, he's indoctrinated into beliefs that were guaranteed at this dysfunctional level of health or certainly what they're capable of. Plus, that there's almost no hope for that individual unless they want to make radical statements and follow people who are willing to go out and fail and try these other things and come back and say, hey, look, here's what I learned about this, try and avoid this.
    • [spp-timestamp time="52:30"] In order for me to overcome my physical challenges, I had to correct my gastrointestinal system. I had created inflammation following a bodybuilding type diet.

Reconnect with nature. We are animals that are built to connect to the surface of this planet and the sun. That’s what drives every single program in you. You have a Doctor in you that was put there by mother nature. That Doctor is all your bodies semiconductors. All you have got to do is get out of the way of your beliefs, culture, society, civilization, friends, and family. Block a lot of that. Once you become aware of that and get out of the way, reconnect with nature and watch the doctor inside of you perform what it is capable of.

On This Episode You Will Hear:
    • [spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction
    • [spp-timestamp time="05:00"] It was hard back in the beginning because most people thought I was absolutely crazy. When I started this, a lot of my colleagues thought it was nuts.
    • [spp-timestamp time="10:00"] I pay attention to our species, their mitochondria right here and in our hearts. I want you to think about all the death and destruction that's going on around us. The number one causes of death in the United States are tied to the brain and the heart.
    • [spp-timestamp time="15:00"] You can see a guy who's physically fit, a perfect example we can use is Kevin Cottrell. When I first met Kevin, Kevin was extremely fit but had big-time health challenges. If you look at his hormone panel, it was destroyed. Why was it destroyed when the guy looks exactly like you know, an Adonis.
    • [spp-timestamp time="20:00"] The visual system turns out to be the single most important part of the mitochondria x existence. That's what I teach people.
    • [spp-timestamp time="25:00"] That's when I took a trip to Michelangelo's David, because it was on my bucket list. I looked up at him and I looked at my fat ass and I said, what's the need for perfection and me? It dawned on me right away, it was circadian biology. David was created 500 years ago where there was no electric lights, there was no internet, there was none of that.
    • [spp-timestamp time="31:00"] My big frustration is in my paradigm in medicine. People are not ready for this. Why? The system is set up to take care of sick people. They don't want to build healthy people.
    • [spp-timestamp time="35:00"] He was doing deadlifts and his spine completely fractured! You know why that happened? Go back and look at every video that you've ever seen of that cat online. He was always indoors.
    • [spp-timestamp time="40:00"] Hydrate your mitochondria. Everybody uses seven to ten devices that are bi-directional microwave devices. So that's the reason why you can be buck ass naked in Los Angeles and your vitamin D will never go up. Because to actually make vitamin D, your mitochondria have to make water.
    • [spp-timestamp time="45:00"] We're going to be able to augment the mammalian battery. This is going to be huge for people, you're going to be able to help performance, especially for you CrossFit guys. So our whole idea was really based around guys like you, if I told you that you can go do a bench press, and I can I add 20% of your weight within three or four weeks, you'd be like, come on, dude!
    • [spp-timestamp time="50:00"] When I teach people, I teach them to focus on the mitochondria and living as a Mitochondriac vs a Biohacker. Every Biohack that I do now is based around mitochondria.
    • [spp-timestamp time="1:02:40"] Most of the people in medicine don't even know about the history. This is the cool part about quantum biology because guess what, 10 years ago I never knew about that and when my mitochondria recovered in my brain, I started to really think well.
