Living for the Cinema

When this came out in 2003, it was marketed as “The Ultimate Romantic Comedy.”

The story takes place over the Christmas holidays in London and stars a who’s-who of top-flight UK acting talent including the late great Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Bill Nighy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Keira Knightly, and even a few notable Americans including Laura Linney and Billy Bob Thornton.  AND it was the directorial debut of Richard Curtis, screenwriter of beloved ‘90’s romantic comedies Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill….

Wow, how could this NOT the greatest rom-com EVER??

Let’s find out and also some hints below with a link to Screen Junkie’s “Honest Trailer” for this movie on YouTube…..

So just under thirty years ago, Tim Burton directed a sequel to his HUGELY successful Batman movie of 1989….and he made it even weirder….AND it’s a Christmas movie no less.

Just in time for the holidays, it’s time to revisit this bizarrely entertaining Bat-Sequel starring Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader, Michelle Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Danny Devito as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, and Christopher Walken as Max Shrek.

And don't forget that mistletoe can be deadly if you eat it….

‘Tis the season for holiday romantic comedies (not to mention those airing nightly on the Hallmark Channel) which also feature ALL of the cliches and rom-com tropes you have come to know and love!

Here's a Christmas movie that broke out last year for a few reasons:
1) it features an A-List cast, better production values (it’s actually shot on-location), and….
2) at its center is a lesbian couple played by Kristen Stewart and MacKenzie Davis.

Abby (Stewart) and Harper (Davis) – are in love and Harper is finally bringing Abby home to meet her parents for Christmas….or is she?  And of course, Harper hasn’t been honest with Abby OR her pretentious family and what results has often been described as the “Lesbian Christmas Version of Meet the Parents.”

Let's find out how this crazy holiday rom-com holds up against the rest!

“Football Week” continues with this football drama set in Alexandria, VA in 1971 and “based on true events.”

Starring Denzel Washington as Herman Boone, coach of the T.C. Williams “Titans” a varsity football team from the first racially integrated school in its district also fielding the first racially integrated football team in that district as well.

Needless to say, not everyone is getting along and racial tensions at the school and surrounding areas aren’t helping matters either.  But as you would expect, this team of Titans comes together under the fierce leadership of Coach Boone to have one more memorable season!

Directed by Boaz Yakin, this inspiring story also stars Will Patton, Wood Harris, Ryan Hurst, a very young Ryan Gosling, Donald Faison, and an even younger Hayden Panettiere.

What happens when you combine the talents of the director of "Top Gun" (Tony Scott), the writer of "Lethal Weapon" (Shane Black), with the star of "Die Hard" (Bruce Willis), and the producer of both "Lethal Weapon" AND "Die Hard" (Joel Silver)??

You get a dark, funny, and ultra-cynical buddy-action comedy, pairing up Willis’ grizzled, chain-smoking/borderline alcoholic PI Joe Hallenbeck with Damon Wayan’s fast-talking, pill-addicted disgraced former football star Jimmy Dix.

You also get loads of laughs and action all in service of a crazy plot involving the murder of a stripper and the escalating corruption of professional football.

It all adds up to a crazy time had by all...

WHO YOU GONNA CALL???

The director of this new Ghostbusters movie, Jason Reitman is actually the son of Ivan Reitman who directed the first two Ghostbusters movies.  This time around, he has given us a direct sequel to the original 1984 classic.

The action is now set in the Oklahoma country where the progeny of the late Dr. Egon Spangler has resettled in a country house and farm that he left them.  McKenna Grace stars as his granddaughter with Finn Wolfhard (of Stranger Things fame) as his grandson – Carrie Coon plays their mother and Paul Rudd plays a local teacher who befriends them as they all start to notice SPOOKY things around their house.

And Grandpa Egon also apparently left them loads of cool Ghostbusters gear including that famous “Ecto 1” car.  Needless to say, we apparently have a new generation of Ghostbusters on the case – let’s see how this one compares to the previous films and if ‘Bustin still makes us feel good!' 😉

Eddie Murphy plays the con-man Billy Ray Valentine and Dan Ackroyd plays a spoiled investment banker Lewis Winthorp – one is barely making it while the other is living VERY comfortably...

Let's see what happens when they…..trade places! 😉

Of course, they’re not doing this on their own – it’s all plotted by the evil and powerful Duke brothers played by Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche who also get help along the way from Denholm Elliott as a wise live-in butler and Jamie Lee Curtis as a hooker with a heart of gold.

If it all sounds silly and cliched, don’t worry because it’s not – as directed by John Landis, this was one of the smartest comedies of the ’80s featuring two comedic stars at the height of their careers.

WARNING- ONE SCENE WITH EXPLICIT LANGUAGE

Could this be the Best Thanksgiving Movie ever?  Well, it’s definitely a contender as written and directed by the late, great John Hughes.

It stars Steve Martin and John Candy as two mismatched strangers attempting to travel home to Chicago for Thanksgiving – along the way, they deal with a lot more than they bargained for traveling via all of the titular modes of transportation.  And there are plenty of mishaps involving cigars, credit cards, rental cars, and even pillows... It’s all very funny and heartfelt and in the spirit of what the holiday is all about.

SHOUT OUT to A.J. Chat Podcast - she will be interviewing Chris Candy and talking about this movie for Thanksgiving

After 5+ years of endless online discourse regarding this film’s quality and what it means, it’s time to revisit this superhero epic directed by Zack Snyder.

In case the title didn’t already convey this, this film presents us with a burgeoning conflict between Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) as they both attempt to protect the citizens of their respective home cities, Gotham City and Metropolis.

But throwing a monkey wrench into both of their plans are the machinations of the evil Lex Luthor played by Jesse Eisenberg and along the way, we also spend time with Lois Lane (Amy Adams) and a mysterious artifacts curator played by Gal Gadot….

When we’re not seeing disturbing images both on the ground and flashing (pun intended) through the mind of Affleck’s Bruce Wayne.  Let’s revisit what works and what doesn’t work about the film which launched a thousand “Martha” memes!

Contrary to what many believe, the Western genre is still alive….and thriving thanks to Netflix.

Here we have a good, old-fashioned tale of rival gangs, redemption, and revenge from a very talented filmmaker directing his first feature no less.

Directed by Jeymes Samuel, it stars Jonathan Majors, Zazie Beetz, Idris Elba, Regina King, Delroy Lindo, and Lakeith Stanfield – just a dream team of African American talent providing an underseen POV of how the Wild West really was.

There are musical numbers, shootouts galore, and loads of tense stand-offs – it’s time to find out the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of what makes THIS film unique! 😉
