Living for the Cinema

Happy 35th Anniversary to what is considered by many to not only be one of the seminal films about the Vietnam conflict but one of the Greatest War Films of All Time.

It was a major breakout for its creator Oliver Stone who himself was a decorated veteran of that war – for this film, he won both Best Director and Best Original Screenplay as he spent many years after returning home writing this screenplay.

This film mainly focuses on the story of newly enlisted Private Taylor played by Charlie Sheen and his evolving relationships with two very different senior officers of his platoon, Barnes played by Tom Berenger and Elias played by Willem Dafoe.  We follow these soldiers along with several others as they engage in on-the-ground conflict with the Viet Cong and eventually each other.  What results is an unforgettable drama loaded with unforgettable moments and images.

What happens when a local fraternity moves in next door to a young couple with a newborn baby?

Well, hilarity of course thanks to this raucous comedy from director Nicholas Stoller who had also directed past comedic gems including "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Get Him to the Greek."

Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne play the young couple and Zac Efron plays the hunky head of the fraternity – they all start out as friends but of course, things escalate once the frat parties start getting louder and louder.  It becomes FAMILY vs. FRAT, the ultimate battle!

Just under thirty years ago, three-time Oscar Winner Oliver Stone directed one of the most controversial major studio films of all time and it was about one of the most consequential events of the latter half of the 20th Century….the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963.

But it wasn’t just about the assassination of a sitting President, it was even more so about the CONSPIRACY behind that assassination and the investigation to uncover the truth about this conspiracy….or at least how Oliver Stone saw things.

And what resulted was a dizzying 3+ hour epic conspiracy thriller/courtroom drama featuring a high-powered cast including Kevin Costner, Joe Pesci, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, Gary Oldman, and too many other notable actors to mention.

Much of what was portrayed in this film was based on fact but much was also based on speculation – how much does this film blur the lines between those two?  It’s time to revisit one of the most influential films of the ’90s and how it still holds up even as just a movie…..

Eight thousand years into the future, the most valuable commodity in the universe is the Spice Melange on the desert planet of Arrakis, otherwise known as “Dune.”

Warring planets and factions will fight for control of it including the Houses of Atreides and Harkonnen – if this sounds familiar, that’s because it is the basis for the story of “Dune” the seminal 1965 sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert AND it was also the basis for a 1984 movie directed by David Lynch.

Well now, the talented French-Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve – the director of Blade Runner 2049, Sicario, and Arrival– has brought it back to the big screen and with a STACKED cast including Timothee Chalemet, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Zendaya, Jason Mamoa, along with several other notable actors.  Let’s see how this all translates to the big screen again, especially those sandworms!

As Halloween approaches, what better way to celebrate than to watch one of the more underrated horror films of the 1980s.

This is the story of Charlie (William Ragsdale), a mild-mannered teenager living in suburbia who lives with his mother – one day, two strange new neighbors move in next door and one of them seems to have some VERY strange nocturnal behaviors.  One of those neighbors happens to be the mysterious Jerry Dandridge played by Chris Sarandon and Jerry appears to be….a vampire...

What follows is a scary, tense, and funny vampire tale featuring TOP-flight creature effects and a nice supporting performance by Roddy McDowall as the host of a late-night horror anthology  show known as ”Fright Night.”

Tom Holland (no not the one who plays Spider-Man) both wrote and directed this movie before making a splash just a couple of years later directing the first Child's Play.

Just in time for Halloween, let’s review one of the craziest horror thrillers from the ‘90’s which came out almost thirty years ago and was directed by the Master himself Martin Scorcese….as his follow-up to a little film called Goodfellas.

It stars Robert DeNiro as ex-con Max Cady who is out for revenge against the attorney Sam Bowden who failed to keep him out of jail 14 years earlier played by Nick Nolte.  Sam’s wife and teenage daughter also get put in harm’s way, they’re played by Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis – everyone just brings it with lights-out performances as both Lewis and DeNiro were nominated for Oscars at the time.

Come out, come out wherever you are!!!

Michael Myers is back in Haddonfield and guess what he’s doing? Well, the title kind of gives that away but beyond him, also returning is Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode along with Judy Greer as her daughter Karen – Laurie is still recovering from the brutal events of the previous film as this movie picks up literally RIGHT where that one left off.

As a result, several of the local townspeople are on the hunt for Myers as he continues his rampage of death throughout their small town – they’re lead by Tommy Doyle played by Anthony Michael Hall, remember him?? 😊

David Gordon Green also returns as director and takes us through a carnage-filled journey through both the past and present – let’s see how this holds up compared to the surprisingly strong Halloween reboot-quel (?) from 2018!

1996 was one great year for movies including a big studio RomCom starring George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer which came out just under 25 years ago.

They’re playing mismatched (or are they?) Manhattanites racing around the city, juggling work commitments and kids….all the while falling in love? 😊

Michael Hoffman directs this breezy, funny romp featuring two movie stars at their peak!

Well, it’s finally here….the final James Bond starring Daniel Craig, and wow does he go out with a bang!

The story kicks off with 007 retired living with the lovely Madeline played Lea Sidoux but of course….the criminal underworld comes calling as he once again gets enmeshed with the terrorist organization SPECTRE lead by Christoph Waltz’s Blowfeld along with a mysterious new villain Safin played by recent Oscar-winner Rami Malek.

Also back along for the ride are Bond’s “Scooby gang” including Jeffrey Wright, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, and Ben Wishaw…in addition to a new OO7 played by Lashana Lynch.  Cary Joji Fukunaga directs this epic conclusion to the Craig Bond Saga and what results is an epic-length review including major spoilers, so be warned!

Twenty-five years ago, this small indie neo-noir grabbed the attention of both critics and cinephiles by announcing a talented new duo of directors….the Wachowskis.

Three years later, they would direct The Matrix, and of course, the rest of the world noticed them after that blockbuster!

Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly star as two neighbors who fall for each other…only one of them is living with a local gangster played by Joe Pantoliano who just laundered more than $2 million in mob money.  And what results is tense, twisty, sexy, and probably one of the best thrillers of the ‘90’s!
