The gracious God is also a God who will punish the guilty. But his punishment of the guilty is not distinct from his graciousness and love. He doesn’t love with one hand and punish with the other. In Ezekiel 18:23 God says that he takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, preferring they turn from their ways and live. Even when his justice demands punishment, God desires to show mercy. And in his grace, he is patient toward us, not wanting any to perish (2 Peter 3:9).

God is set apart by His Holiness more than by any of His other perfections. God uses the term “holy” in many ways: with it, He describes Himself; Lord Jesus used the word; the third person of the Trinity holds it in His title, Holy Spirit. All persons of the Trinity ascribe themselves to be holy.

The wisdom of God is seen in His providence—the way He rules and governs His universe and accomplishes His purposes through it. The greatest manifestation of the wisdom of God is in redemption, and through this, He solved the problem of satisfying both His justice and His mercy. God’s knowledge is intuitive and not obtained by reflection or deduction. The Lord did not create this universe and then look out upon it and reason from His creation to the knowledge of it, or indeed of anything else. Intuition is knowledge that He possesses eternally as the Divine. He needs not reason conclusions because He knows all of the conclusions that there ever could be.

God is an unchanging, immutable being. From a theological standpoint, this means that God can have no new attributes. The incommunicable attributes stress the absolute being of God, because only He has those attributes. The communicable attributes stress His personal nature by which He enters into relationships with us. Our state of existence will be determined by whether God’s life is inside or not. The location of someone’s eternal existence is what separates the saints from the unbelievers. Nevertheless, both shall live forever because all will have an endless existence. However, this is not eternity, because when we say that God has eternity, it means He has no beginning or ending as humans possess.
