Locked On Brewers- Daily Podcast On The Milwaukee Brewers

Craig Counsell announced Corbin Burnes is the Brewers Opening Day starter for April 7th at Chicago, as the Cy Young Award winner earns his first nod to lead the rotation. Dom and Vinny had been alluding to this for the last week, granted I think we could all see it coming after the award was announced. But let's take a dive back into his insane 2021 season clicking around Baseball-Reference and Baseball Savant.

We begin half of our NL Central preview as well, reminding you of the offseason moves of the bottom two teams in the league, the Reds and the Pirates. What's to be expected of them this year? How did the Brewers do against them last year? Everything you need to know ahead of Opening Week!

Corbin Burnes took the ball on Monday afternoon and reminded the Giants and the rest of the National League why he's the reigning Cy Young Award winner. The ace struck out eight over five innings of one-run ball. He's gotta be a lock for Opening Day starter right? Dom and Vinny discuss the fact that the abbreviated spring training has impacted all starters, but Corbin doesn't seem to be phased.

Also, MLB Network's annual "Top 100 Players Right Now" list began with #100-#81 ... and there were two Brewers present on the list, but also one egregious error. Tune in to find out!

*EDITOR'S NOTE* This episode was already recorded and edited before the Albert Pujols news broke late last night. We will have reaction for what it means in tomorrow's podcast.

It's shocking to think there are just ten days and nine games left of Spring Training before Opening Day! First, Vinny and Dom react to Brewer's Principal Owner Mark Attanasio's comments this past weekend on the budget of the team and the current state of the payroll.

Then they discuss where Tyrone Taylor can fit on this roster with his massive performance so far - even with Keston Hiura and Andrew McCutchen hitting well in camp.

The third installment of the season preview continues with a closer look at the infield unit, which is one of the more set-in-stone units of the current Brewers team. Dom and Vinny marvel at the thought of Adames and Tellez finally getting the chance to play everyday for the Brew Crew and what their production could look like. They also remind you that Kolten Wong's got dad strength now, and he's a sharpie at the top of the lineup for Craig Counsell.

There is also a ton of versatility with this group: guys like Mike Brosseau and Jace Peterson come to mind for their key contributions off the bench. What will their roles look like with the DH in the NL and far fewer opportunities to pinch-hit?

Finally, there is a new top 30 prospect list from MLB.com, and they've crowned a new number 1 prospect in the Milwaukee organization. Who is it? Listen to find out!

A crazy thought: two weeks ago, we were still in negotiations for the owner's lockout ... now we are two weeks away from Opening Day! Dom and Vinny do a light diagnostic check on the club as it currently stands after a week of Cactus League play.

They also touch on the wacky game against the Reds last night which included Keston Hiura's second homer of the spring, and Tyrone Taylor going yard. Corbin Burnes started the game as well and the guys remind fans to never freak out at pitcher lines in spring training.

The Brewers added to their radio booth this past offseason with the hire of Josh Maurer and he sat down to introduce himself with us. Josh spent the last eight seasons as the voice of the Boston Red Sox AAA affiliate (Pawtucket & Worcester) in the gig that's heralded in the Minors as the best team at producing big league talent on the air.

We chat with Josh about his first impressions of the Brewers, his career background, preparing for a broadcast, and of course his first interactions with Bob Uecker.

Four games into Cactus League play, it's hard to believe we are nearly a quarter of the way done with the spring circuit. Adrian Houser's first outing in 2022 was a perfect one... no really it was perfect! Nine up and nine down for the Brewers right-hander. Dom dives into the numbers of his goals for the 2022 season to be a key contributor again for the Crew.

The offense continues to roll for Milwaukee, posting 13 runs last night in Scottsdale against the Giants. Willy Adames connected on his first homer of the spring as well, and Dom explains why its especially a welcomed sight for Crew fans.

Also we cover the headlines of camp: Luis Urías's injured quad, Lorenzo Cain's debut, upcoming starters, and position battles.

The Brewers opened Cactus League play with a 2-0-1 record thanks to some potent offense and dominant pitching, but may have lost one of their key contributors for Opening Day. Luis Urías injured his left quad on Saturday against the Rangers, and Craig Counsell provided an update on his condition ahead of Sunday's game.

On a brighter note, Sunday was Freddy Peralta's spring debut and he was dominant against the Padres. He allowed just one baserunner on 40 pitches working into the third inning. He also shared his goals for the upcoming season.

Finally a light mailbag episode touches on Kolten Wong's future as a Brewer, and the guys explain why he's worth a ton more now than what he's signed for.

Spring Training games officially begin today with the Brewers headed to Glendale to visit the Dodgers at 3:05 PM CT. Minor League lefty Ethan Small will get the start in the lid-lifter for the Brewers, and it leads to a conversation about how important innings will be in this condensed spring.

Also, Vinny and Dom breakdown where there could be position battles and what is left to be decided for the roster ahead of Opening Day in just 20 days.

They close the pod updating MLB.com's new Top 100 prospects with two Brewers representing on the list, including a friend of the program!

Programming note: beginning next week, we return to five days a week for our schedule!

The Brewers pitching staff was so ridiculous last season, Joey Votto said it was the best pitching staff he's faced top-to-bottom. That includes the bullpen, anchored of course by Devin Williams and Josh Hader. But as the guys go through each of the candidates to help out the bullpen this season, is there an argument to be made that the 2022 team is better on paper?

Also, the guys were recording during the Freddie Freeman rumors escalating ... so no one is really surprised to wake up to him heading to LA. However we were VERY surprised at Kris Bryant joining the Rockies??? Lots to react to on the transaction front as well.
