Locked On Hornets - Daily Podcast On The Charlotte Hornets

On this episode of Locked On Hornets, Doug Branson and Walker Mehl dive into the ultimate question: who holds the most trade value on the Charlotte Hornets roster? The rankings are in—and while LaMelo Ball might still top the list, Brandon Miller, Miles Bridges, and Mark Williams all make strong cases. With Mark nearly netting multiple firsts and Miles on a team-friendly deal, the debate around spots 3 and 4 gets spicy.

We also explore the philosophical implications of trading LaMelo: would it accelerate a rebuild or stall it completely? Walker argues it could send Charlotte further into the second-inning metaphorical rain delay, while Doug wonders if trading for impact players could reignite the franchise.

On a feel-good note, the guys shout out Jaylen Sims, the Charlotte native and Swarm standout, who just signed a 10-day contract with the Hornets. It’s a local story you don’t want to miss.

Finally, mock draft season is alive and well—we break down our 10th one of the year and examine if prospects like Tre Johnson could be the shooter this team desperately needs.

The Supersonics could be getting their team back. What can they learn from the disaster that was the Charlotte Bobcats.

The Charlotte Hornets put up a fight against the Indiana Pacers but couldn’t overcome a turnover-heavy night, ultimately falling 119-105. Doug and Walker break down the ethical loss and highlight standout performances from Miles Bridges and Mark Williams, who delivered an unforgettable tip-in bucket that had Eric Collins (and us) losing our minds. Despite the loss, we saw the young core hustle hard, and Moussa Diabaté once again proved to be the Hornets’ most bang-for-your-buck baller—though his effort might be too much for a team leaning into the tank.

We’ve also got the latest on LaMelo Ball’s recovery: the Hornets announced successful arthroscopic procedures on both his ankle and wrist, with a full return to basketball activity expected in 4-6 weeks. What does this mean for offseason development, team chemistry, and LaMelo’s role next season?

Plus, we hit a new mock draft that sees the Hornets taking Ace Bailey at #3 and question whether the franchise is moving to the third inning… or still in a rain delay. We also tackle a Sicko Satchel question about how long fans can hang on and how history continues to sting. It’s all here: the good, the bad, the painful truth of Hornets basketball.

Injuries and poor team performance have thrust LaMelo Ball trade speculation into the forefront of national NBA conversations around the Charlotte Hornets. If they move on, who would be the top teams to watch? Walker makes the case that an intra-division trade with the Magic makes the most sense. With Orlando's lackluster offense and treasure chest of assets, could a deal centered around Jalen Suggs and draft picks tempt Charlotte into a franchise-shifting move?

Doug and Walker dive into why Memphis is NOT a good fit for a LaMelo-Ja Morant swap (spoiler: injury risk and off-court baggage galore) and explore other interesting trade partners like Houston, Toronto, and Brooklyn. Plus, Doug reveals which team he thinks has the leverage in any LaMelo trade conversation—Charlotte might not be under pressure at all.

Then, it's a trip into the Sicko Satchel, where listener questions spark a debate on the most critical offseason need: is it backup point guard, or is it finally time to find real shooting help? Finally, Doug runs a mock draft sim using The Ringer’s big board, and it lands the Hornets in a dicey spot at No. 4 overall—what does that mean for the Ace Bailey hype?

The Charlotte Hornets eked out a chaotic, wire-to-wire win over the Utah Jazz in what can only be described as the NBA’s version of a “toilet bowl.” Doug and Walker break down the mess and the moments of brilliance, starting with Miles Bridges’ quiet 26 points and Mark Williams’ near-perfect shooting streak. The guys debate whether Bridges should continue playing down the stretch or be benched to avoid injury during these sloppy, meaningless games.

Walker calls attention to rookie Tidjane Salaun’s electric night off the bench—perfect from three, full of hustle plays, and showing signs that the game is finally slowing down for him. Doug celebrates Salaun’s maturity and growth inside Charlotte’s player development system and draws a sharp contrast with the recently departed Kai Jones, who’s suddenly thriving in Dallas.

Then it’s mock draft time: the Hornets fall to No. 5 in the latest Tankathon simulation, prompting a fresh discussion on VJ Edgecombe’s rising stock. Is he the right pick over upside guys like Ace Bailey? Plus, Charles Lee is rolling out bizarre double-big lineups featuring Mark Williams and Jusuf Nurkić. Is this just tank season weirdness or something more?

And did you know? This win marked the Hornets' first wire-to-wire victory of the season—and their first season sweep of Utah since 1995. All that, plus a mini Hornets history lesson and Doug’s disdain for April Fool’s jokes.

On this episode of Locked On Hornets, we react to the breaking news that LaMelo Ball is officially out for the season after undergoing ankle and wrist procedures. With his injury history piling up, the crew asks a tough question: have we seen LaMelo’s last game in a Hornets uniform? Doug and Walker revisit LaMelo’s up-and-down fifth NBA season, from his All-Star caliber start to his efficiency issues and the growing concerns about his ability to be a true No. 1 option. They also draw historical parallels to other Hornets legends like Larry Johnson and Kemba Walker whose careers in Charlotte were also defined by injuries and pivotal decisions.

Beyond LaMelo, the conversation shifts to the Hornets’ current tank race position and how they stack up against other teams in the Cooper Flagg sweepstakes. Doug unveils his latest mock draft projection, with a simulated lottery landing the Hornets the No. 2 pick and a shot at Rutgers’ Dylan Harper. Could Harper and LaMelo coexist in the backcourt?

Plus, a surprising moment from the Raptors game: Mark Williams uncorks his inner Dirk Nowitzki with a pair of sweet fadeaways. Could we be seeing the birth of a new offensive weapon? All that and more in today’s episode.

Cooper Flagg put on a Sweet 16 showcase for the ages, dropping 30 points with elite two-way play that left no doubt about his top draft status. Doug Branson and Walker Mehl ask the biggest question in Charlotte: if the Hornets land the number one overall pick, would you trade it—even for a haul? The guys weigh what it would take (Brandon Miller? Three firsts?) to move the needle and why the answer is probably still “no.”

Finally, the boys ask a tougher question—what if Charlotte doesn’t get the top pick? Should they trade up to get Flagg, even if it means surrendering major pieces? And what’s the history of trading up for #1 anyway—does it work out?

Whether it’s Flagg-mania or fit debates, this episode is a must-listen for draft junkies and Hornets faithful alike.

The Charlotte Hornets officially broke ground on the Novant Health Performance Center, and the Locked On Hornets crew was on hand to take it all in. From legendary Hornets like Muggsy Bogues and Kemba Walker to current decision-makers and media, the Uptown event was buzzing with optimism. We talk through what this $150 million investment actually means for the team’s ability to attract talent. Can a premier practice facility really lure free agents, or is it more of a symbol of organizational commitment?

Doug shares his take on why the Performance Center matters—and how it's already helping shift the franchise’s “cheap” reputation. We also relive some hilarious weight room stories, from Kemba’s days of cramped lifting to Walker’s surprise interaction with Kenny “The Gap Man” Gattison and a side convo about the saltwater tanks of Boston.

Then it’s MOCK DRAFT time. Doug simulates the lottery and, well… ouch. The Hornets slide to sixth, and we talk about one potential pick: Lithuanian point guard Kasparas Jakucionis. He's getting comparisons to Lonzo Ball, can the Hornets justify the fit next to LaMelo Ball?

It was a loss, but was it a good loss? The Charlotte Hornets fell to the Orlando Magic 111–104, but Doug and Walker argue this might’ve been an "ethical" loss with long-term benefits. Charles Lee kept rookies like Nick Smith Jr. and Tidjane Salaun in the game during crunch time, prioritizing development over a meaningless win. The guys debate whether that’s the right move and praise the young core’s fight despite some late-game struggles and more abysmal officiating.

LaMelo Ball showed real poise and aggression, finishing with 21 points on 13 shots—despite getting hammered without a whistle. But should Charles Lee finally get a tech and stand up for his star? Doug thinks so, and the hosts discuss how coaches send messages to officials with more than just their words.

Doug also shares his latest mock draft pick, revealing why he’s IN on Ace Bailey—despite his inconsistencies—and what makes this draft so tricky for Charlotte. They also go full Severance mode with a game of "Innie or Outie" to decide which players they're irrational buying in on and who still needs to prove something.

Finally, Walker reports live from the groundbreaking of the Hornets' new 160,000 sq. ft. practice facility. Will this new investment finally translate into wins, or is it just window dressing? It’s all here on a jam-packed Locked On Hornets.
