Locked On MLB - Daily Podcast On Major League Baseball

2023 has arrived. One MLB fan base will look back at this year as a magical one. And perhaps a long suffering fan base will have their pain eased.

Several years ago, Sully created the Suffering Index as a method to quantify which fan base has been going through the most and the least amount of agony.

With some adjustments over the years, the formula takes into account length of waiting for a title, the close games that slipped away and losing seasons endured since the last title.

Cleveland fans... look away.

Below is the updated formula for the Suffering Index.

(Number of Years Since a Team’s Last World Series Title)

+ (Number of Years Since a Team’s Last Pennant ÷ 4)

+ (Number of Years Since the World Series Title BEFORE the Last one ÷ 8)

+ (Number of Years Since a Team’s Last Post Season Appearance ÷ 16)

+ (Number of Deciding or One Game Playoffs LOST since last World Series title x 10)

– (Number of Deciding or One Game Playoffs WON since last World Series title)

+ (Number of sub .500 Seasons Since Last World Series Title X2)

+ (Number of 100 loss Seasons Since Last World Series Title X3)

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in the middle of their greatest run in franchise history. But there is an aura of disappointment over the franchise as they only have one title to show for their many wonderful seasons.

And now with Trea Turner leaving, the team is going through a bit on an identity shift.

Jeff Snider of Locked on Dodgers joins the show to talk about the glory years of the past and promise for the future.

The Mets are spending too much...

The Orioles are not spending enough...

The Red Sox are spending on the wrong people...

The Braves are signing too many players to team friendly deals.

It is hard to please ANYONE this off season. And Millard Thomas of Locked on Diamondbacks joins the show to help propose contract term limits and a salary floor.

Today's episode is a crossover discussion with Jeff Ellis and Justin Lada of Locked On Guardians talking about the Cleveland Guardians offseason. We get into the next wave of young players coming for Cleveland.

The discussion continues with wondering what, if any, moves Cleveland should make to add to the team and if they would pursue a Red Sox star at the trading deadline.

Merry Christmas! Or for those of you who do not celebrate Christmas, Happy Rickey Henderson's Birthday.

On this Christmas morning, Sully remembers his favorite presents of the past, including a cherished Baseball Encyclopedia that he received in 1981.

Plus, he read throw a wish list he created in 2019 for the things he wanted to see happen in baseball in the 2020's. Some have already been checked off the list. He was reminded of that list by friend of the podcast Marcell, aka "Cubs Fan with an 8."

But the very fabric of baseball and how rosters are constructed would have been very different if not for the rulings of arbitrator Peter Seitz.

He helped strike down The Reserve Clause that bound players to teams indefinitely and on this day in 1975 began the free agency era.

What are the Red Sox doing? That seems to be the refrain of Boston fans everywhere. In 2018, they won the World Series (albeit in a shady manner) with a core of home grown star players.

By 2022 and 2023, more of those players were playing in Los Angeles than in Boston and Rafael Devers will no doubt be the next star to go.

Lauren Willand of Locked on Red Sox joins the show to wonder how the big budget Red Sox suddenly made so many decisions based on frugality.

Do NOT sleep on Carlos Correa!

24 hours ago, he was about to be introduced as the face of the Giants for the next decade and a half.

We woke up this morning to see he will be spending 12 years with the New York Mets.

It has been a dizzying few hours and your pal Sully has not even shaved yet!
