The Cleveland Browns are close to picking their starting quarterback, but the reality is Shedeur Sanders is the only right option and Deshaun Watson made that even more obvious this weekend when he flamed the Browns fanbase for how he's been treated and took zero accountability for the turmoil he's experienced over the past few years. Another quarterback battle to watch is in Atlanta where the Falcons have not been impressed with Tua Tagovailoa so far, but now Michael Penix returns to full action and can make this a real competition over the next three weeks. The Minnesota Vikings ended their battle weeks ago, choosing Kyler Murray, but they have totally failed to give him adequate reps to get ready for the season ahead. For younger passers, the Pittsburgh Steelers have a very important depth fight happening between Drew Allar and Will Howard, but after Howard's poor showing this weekend, it could be over. Finally, the Las Vegas Raiders thought Fernando Mendoza might be ready to go, but after a rough outing, maybe it is time to pump the brakes on that.

The Cleveland Browns have mistreated Shedeur Sanders from the moment he was drafted so it should be no shock that he was not given a fair shot at the starting quarterback position. Sanders will get his chance to start this weekend, but will not be flanked by the starters when he faces the Buffalo Bills, like Deshaun Watson got to experience. The former coach of the Browns, Kevin Stefanski, is not dealing with a much better situation as he now leads the Atlanta Falcons. Whether it be injuries or poor play, nothing is going right for the Falcons as of late after they got smoked by the Indianapolis Colts in a scrimmage this week. The Chicago Bears put up 37 points last week and looks to keep rolling as the Cincinnati Bengals look to get their well-regarded offense off the ground. Finally, two interesting games for quarterback purposes. The Baltimore Ravens against the Minnesota Vikings, and the Pittsburgh Steelers against the New York Jets. How much of Lamar Jackson and Kyler Murray will we see in the first game and then which young quarterbacks out of Will Howard, Drew Allar and Cade Klubnik will perform best?

The NFL season draws near and it is PLAYOFFS OR BUST for many teams. This includes essentially every team in the NFC East with the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Washington Commanders all looking to get back into the dance, but the Giants shouldn't be judged quite on that scale just yet. In the AFC, the Indianapolis Colts have tremendous pressure from ownership to get to the postseason this year and that is quite the tough task in a competitive AFC. An AFC that includes both the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens who cannot afford another miss. Finally, back in the NFC, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are all in for 2026 while two teams in the NFC North, the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings, view themselves as potential division winners, not just playoff attendees.

The New Orleans Saints took Jordyn Tyson in the first round of the NFL Draft with the risk that he would get injured as he has many times in his college career and with a few weeks until the season, Tyson is now set to miss multiple months with a hamstring injury. With other weapons, the Saints will likely lean on their own reserves, but getting some outside help would be smart if they are able. The New York Jets are also dealing with an injury, a groin strain to Breece Hall, but with the injury expected to be short-term and lower expectations, the Jets can be patient. The Indianapolis Colts aren't being patient as they finally address wide receiver with veteran Keenan Allen. This is a smart move as the Colts are in playoffs or bust mode. In the AFC South, the Tennessee Titans are in an urgent mode to be more competitive and that's why they urgently need more from Cam Ward, who struggled in his first preseason showing. Likewise, the New York Giants also need more from Jaxson Dart, who did not play a clean game in his first action either. Also in the NFC East, the Dallas Cowboys should continue pushing all in for this core's window as they now have the talent to actually compete.

The Los Angeles Rams are the clear favorites in the NFL and they are about to get deadly as Aaron Donald appears to be near a come back. As one of the best players of all time, Donald will certainly strengthen the front, but whether he returns or not, let's all hope the decision is made soon. The Seattle Seahawks made news over the weekend when they made Devon Witherspoon the highest paid corner in the league, but the champs need to hope the talent they lost can be replaced even if they keep their studs around. Rookies are getting the spotlight in the preseason, but we won't see Jeremiyah Love for a while after the Cardinals overworked him leading to an injury. Dezhaun Stribling is another NFC West rookie that got run in the preseason opener, but Stribling was fantastic and may be proving his doubters wrong. Finally, the New York Jets have some life with Cade Klubnik at quarterback and the Miami Dolphins are seeing some receivers step up.

New York Giants shake up their roster culture as John Harbaugh demands every player—no matter their draft status—earn their spot. Is this accountability the spark the Giants need for long-term success? Meanwhile, Pittsburgh Steelers’ young quarterbacks shine under Mike McCarthy’s system, but key questions linger about how Aaron Rodgers will take over and shape the offense.
Elsewhere, Ty Simpson’s impressive preseason debut for the Los Angeles Rams silences doubters, while Kyler Murray secures the starting job for the Minnesota Vikings amid a bumpy competition with J.J. McCarthy. Plus, the Atlanta Falcons’ pass rush takes a hit with an eight-game suspension for James Pierce and a season-ending injury to Jalon Walker. Nick Cattles and Tony Wiggins break down these major moves, contract storylines for Christian Gonzalez in New England, and how late roster shuffles could define the NFL playoff picture. Can these teams meet sky-high expectations or will setbacks derail their season?
