Locked On Oilers - Daily Podcast On The Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers are navigating early-season roster turbulence, swinging a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins to acquire forward Filip Hållander in exchange for defenseman Spencer Stastney. With injuries mounting across the forward group, Stan Bowman leveraged defensive depth to add a high-motor, forechecking depth piece with second-round pedigree. Host Nick Zararis breaks down why Kyle Dubas was eager to bring Hållander into Pittsburgh's orbit multiple times and how Hållander's north-south, low-event style fits Edmonton's immediate survival strategy.

Following the Oilers' matchup against the San Jose Sharks, the show shifts to an honest retrospective on former top defenseman Darnell Nurse. We examine how rising salary cap scrutiny and modern fan access transformed Nurse’s 798-game tenure in Edmonton from a foundational pillar into an overpaid lightning rod. The discussion covers the fallout of his $9.25 million contract, the emergence of Evan Bouchard and Mattias Ekholm, and how Nurse's defensive instincts impacted Edmonton's recent Stanley Cup Final runs.

Finally, we analyze the Oilers' 4-0-1 start to the season under a heavily structured, low-event defensive identity. Nick breaks down Tristan Jarry's steadying performance in net, Devin Levy’s workload distribution, and how the team is surviving long stretches without key pieces. Plus, get the latest injury updates on Zach Hyman, Matthew Savoie, Jake Walman, and Colton Dach as the schedule begins to intensify

The Edmonton Oilers have faced an uphill battle through their first four games, dressing a piecemeal lineup loaded with questions across every position group. While the team holds Stanley Cup expectations, host Nick Zararis examines whether the roster's current utilization is setting up young players to fail. From over-relying on temporary fill-ins to juggling injured veterans, we break down why Edmonton's lineup remains a high-variance work in progress.

Up front, former Hobey Baker winner Isaac Howard finds himself trapped in a low-minute, fourth-line checking assignment that runs counter to his shoot-first offensive profile. Nick dives into why the Oilers need to determine Howard’s ceiling alongside elite talent rather than burning his organizational equity in survival minutes. Plus, we look at early bright spots like college free agent Owen Michaels and the cautionary tale of asking Colton Dach to do too much too soon.

On the blue line, a battle for the bottom pairing emerges between steady buy-low contributor Ty Emberson and high-upside project Shakir Mukhamadullin. We explain why Emberson’s defensive reliability earned him regular minutes over Mukhamadullin’s raw physical traits, alongside a breakdown of the Ryan Shea and Connor Murphy pairing. Then, we turn to the crease, where Devon Levi’s promising starts cannot mask the impending regular-season workload crisis facing Edmonton's fragile three-goalie rotation

The Edmonton Oilers battled back from an early two-goal deficit to secure a statement 5–2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard combined for 10 points to turn the tide after Anaheim struck twice on the power play early in the first period. We break down how Edmonton shook off last spring’s playoff heartbreak, solved Anaheim’s attack, and proved why their elite core remains the most dangerous trio in the NHL.

Between the pipes, goaltender Devin Levi delivered another steady outing, turning aside 29 shots and stabilizing the net when Edmonton needed it most. With Tristan Jarry watching from the bench and Frederik Andersen sidelined, we examine whether Levi has officially earned the starting reins early this season. We also analyze Edmonton's underlying five-on-five metrics, highlighting how a massive second period completely neutralized the Ducks' transition game.

Special teams remain a critical talking point as Edmonton rallied from giving up two quick goals to kill off five consecutive penalties. We address the Oilers' current injury crisis, evaluating how the lineup is coping without key contributors like Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Finally, we dive into early-season roster dilemmas, including Ike Howard’s fourth-line ice time and what adjustments Mike Babcock must make ahead of the next matchup

The Edmonton Oilers are seeing former 10th-overall pick Vasily Podkolzin take his game to unprecedented heights alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. After arriving in Edmonton via trade from the Vancouver Canucks for just a mid-round pick, Podkolzin has climbed from opening-night fourth-line obscurity into an indispensable top-six powerhouse. Host Nick Zararis breaks down how Podkolzin embraced a high-motor, hard-forechecking identity to earn serious organizational equity and cement his spot on the top line.

Through the early stretch of the season, the underlying 5-on-5 analytics highlight an explosive breakout in the making. Podkolzin ranks among the team leaders in shot attempts, scoring chances, and high-danger chances per 60 minutes while logging roughly 19 minutes per night. With defenses forced to commit extra coverage to McDavid and Draisaitl, Podkolzin is feasting on high-danger real estate and putting relentless pucks on net.

While a 23% shooting percentage will inevitably experience regression, increased ice time and superstar trust could propel Podkolzin toward a legitimate 25-to-30-goal campaign. We examine historical late-bloomer comparisons, analyze why buy-low wingers succeed in Edmonton, and ask whether Podkolzin is poised to become Edmonton’s long-term Zach Hyman successor

The Edmonton Oilers are three games into the season, and host Nick Zararis dives deep into the underlying advanced analytics to separate real sustainability from early-season noise. While small sample sizes can yield wild numbers, the early statistical trends for Edmonton’s core are impossible to ignore. From historic 5-on-5 shares to glaring lineup depth issues, we break down what is truly driving this team right now.

First, we dissect Evan Bouchard’s historic start, where his play-driving and blue-line vision mirror the cerebral control of elite defensemen like Adam Fox. With an 89% 5-on-5 goal share and overwhelming possession metrics, Bouchard is keeping Edmonton pinned in their ideal offensive game state. We discuss why his playmaking is compensating for early goaltending chaos and why a 100-point campaign should instantly place him in Norris Trophy conversations.

Next, the episode breaks down the deployment of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the top line under early coaching decisions. While loading up the two superstars creates an impossible pick-your-poison problem for opposing defenses—aided by Vasily Podkolzin's work on the forecheck—it dramatically exposes Edmonton’s bottom nine. We evaluate whether this top-heavy approach is sustainable long-term or if it forces the depth lines into situations where they are destined to get overwhelmed.

Finally, we run through quick-hit lineup evaluations, spotlighting struggles with Colton Dach at center, Kasperi Kapanen’s role, and Shakir Mukhamadullin’s growing pains on the blue line. Can Edmonton bank early-season points despite high-danger defensive leaks and an unstable penalty kill?

The Edmonton Oilers have kicked off their campaign picking up 5 of 6 available points, but the current formula is built entirely on pure survival mode. With significant forward injuries sidelining key contributors like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Zach Hyman, Matt Savoie, and Jason Dickinson, the lineup has been forced into extreme overexposure. Host Nick Zararis breaks down Edmonton’s 3–1 victory over the Seattle Kraken and explains why grinding out points against division opponents is essential while the roster resembles a MASH unit.

While Devin Levi delivered a steady 19-save performance and Connor McDavid continues his blistering early-season scoring pace, relying on elite star power to mask glaring depth deficiencies is not a sustainable playoff recipe. The bottom nine forwards are effectively functioning as three fourth lines, forcing fringe players and AHL call-ups into critical top-six assignments. In this segment, we examine whether new head coach Mike Babcock can establish structural defensive stability before the schedule ramps up against legitimate championship contenders.

Despite the chaotic forward permutations and defensive pairings, this injury crisis offers an unprecedented audition window for bottom-six forwards fighting to cement regular NHL roster spots. Additionally, we explore Evan Bouchard’s explosive early play and make the case for his potential Norris Trophy campaign if his offensive production keeps pace. The Edmonton Oilers outlasted the Vancouver Canucks in an absolute 9-7 barnburner to split their season-opening home-and-home series. Connor McDavid delivered a dominant five-point performance after a sluggish opening night, providing the high-end offensive spark Edmonton needed to rebound. However, surrendering seven goals to Vancouver exposes glaring early-season flaws that cannot become a habit against upper-echelon contenders.

A closer look at the underlying analytics reveals why Edmonton’s big lead almost vanished in the final frame. While the Oilers controlled possession early, Vancouver pushed back aggressively in the third period with seven high-danger chances to Edmonton’s zero. Between unstable defensive pairings and sub-.750 goaltending from young netminder Devon Levi, Edmonton's habit of turtling with a multi-goal cushion nearly turned catastrophic.

With key regulars like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Zach Hyman, and Matt Savoie sidelined by early injuries, the Oilers must adopt a more disciplined, grinding identity across the bottom nine. Surviving this high-scoring chaos buys time, but sustainable success requires far more structure as the schedule intensifies. The Edmonton Oilers have run headfirst into a catastrophic early-season injury bug that threatens to derail their Stanley Cup aspirations before October even wraps up. Host Nick Zararis breaks down the crushing absences of key contributors Zach Hyman, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Matt Savoie, and Jason Dickinson, highlighting how losing three top-six forwards exposes the roster's razor-thin depth. Without viable, NHL-caliber replacement options waiting in the AHL system, the front office’s high-stakes "Last Dance" roster construction is facing an immediate stress test.

While it is easy to hit the panic button just one game into the regular season, this early adversity will reveal the exact character and mental toughness of this locker room. Drawing parallels to historical dominant regular season squads like the 2019 Lightning and 2023 Bruins who crumbled under playoff pressure due to a lack of adversity, Nick evaluates whether surviving this brutal stretch could ultimately forge Edmonton into a more resilient playoff squad. However, treading water will require Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard to carry a monumental load until reinforcements return.

Tune in to discover why the Oilers' margin for error in the Pacific Division has vanished overnight and whether these injuries were an avoidable consequence of relying on older or injury-prone veterans. From line-rush scrambles to tactical minute management, this episode covers everything Edmonton must do to stay in the postseason hunt before American Thanksgiving.

The Edmonton Oilers opened their season with a wild, chaotic 6-5 overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks, proving that while regular season hockey is back, serious questions loom. Host Nick Zararis breaks down an opening night filled with mixed emotions, highlighted by Evan Bouchard’s historic 5-point performance—the first NHL defenseman ever to record an opening-night hat trick and five points. Despite Bouchard's heroics and a late third-period push by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl to salvage a loser point, Edmonton spent 45 minutes looking completely out of sync.

The biggest flashing red light from game one was between the pipes as Tristan Jarry endured another brutal outing. Allowing six goals on barely one expected goal against, Jarry continues a troubling multi-year trend of severe inconsistency and unplayable stretches dating back to his Pittsburgh days. With Freddie Andersen sidelined until at least December and Devin Levi untested as a heavy-workload NHL starter, the Oilers' goaltending depth is already reaching an alarming tipping point.

Beyond the crease, structural breakdowns and baffling roster usage were on full display under Mike Babcock. Down key pieces like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Matt Savoie, Edmonton ran disjointed line combinations, including head-scratching top-six minutes for Alex Formenton while former first-round pick Ike Howard was buried on the fourth line. We examine why the Oilers' shortened training camp and lack of defensive cohesion contributed to this clunky start, and whether this slow-start habit will derail Edmonton's championship aspirations

The Edmonton Oilers are officially back for Opening Night, but this roster enters the season facing immense uncertainty and major early-season adversity. Host Nick Zararis breaks down why the first month could feature another rocky start as the franchise navigates a massive roster turnover under general manager Stan Bowman. With crucial injuries mounting and key players sidelined, can Edmonton establish a baseline level of consistency before falling behind in the standings?

Between the pipes, Freddie Andersen is out until at least December, throwing the crease to Devin Levi and Tristan Jarry. Meanwhile, forward Matt Savoie is sidelined for approximately eight weeks, opening up a top-six winger competition and leading to controversial warmup line combinations alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. We break down how head coach Mike Babcock’s lineup philosophy impacts younger prospects trying to break through into everyday roles.

Despite the defensive overhauls and early roster turnover, there remains a narrow, high-upside path for Edmonton to make another deep postseason run. In a favorable Pacific Division, having the absolute best high-end talent in the world gives Edmonton a puncher’s chance against anyone in May and June. Nick outlines what the team must prove across this 84-game schedule to peak at the right time and chase a Stanley Cup
