Locked On Panthers - Daily Podcast On The Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers cut its roster down from 80 to 53 players on Tuesday afternoon. Julian Council provided his takeaways from the initial 53, including what surprised him and what fans should expect the Panthers to do as the waiver wire has several players that could interest the organization.

Panthers GM Scott Fitterer was active on Monday night trading for Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Laviska Shenault while also trading away offensive lineman Dennis Daley to Tennessee, who was a likely roster casualty. Julian makes sense of both decisions. Have the Panthers potentially gone overboard in the amount of draft picks that they've traded away the past two seasons?

Plus, Baker Mayfield is upset about how the Cleveland Browns treated him on the way out and somehow that's become national news.

The Carolina Panthers closed out the three-game preseason slate with a 21-0 win against the visiting Buffalo Bills. Newly-minted starting quarterback Baker Mayfield impressed with two touchdown passes as the offense looks to get up to speed before the season opener vs. Cleveland.

Unfortunately, the Panthers were unable to come out of the night injury free as kicker Zane Gonzalez (quad) and backup quarterback Sam Darnold (ankle) were both carted off the field.

Where do the Panthers go now in acquiring a kicker? Could the loss of Gonzalez play a major factor in the season?

PJ Walker appeared to be the odd-man out a week ago but now with injuries to both Corral (season-ending) and Darnold, does Walker ascend into the backup role?

Plus, the Panthers defense looks dominant, are they primed to be the top unit in the NFL?

The Carolina Panthers welcome the Buffalo Bills in their preseason finale at home on Friday night. On Wednesday, Bills head coach Sean McDermott announced that most of his starters, including Josh Allen, won't play on Friday night. Despite that news, Panthers head coach Matt Rhule is planning on playing newly named starting quarterback Baker Mayfield and most of his starters in the first quarter through parts of the second. Can Mayfield and the offensive unit find a rhythm and improve communication against the Bills second unit?

The Panthers have found it challenging to keep the receiver and tight end room healthy throughout camp. One player who has stepped up in the absence of Robbie Anderson and Terrace Marshall is Shi Smith. Rhule has spotlighted Smith's camp on multiple occasions and has said that Smith is competing for a starting spot. Is it now a certainty that Shi Smith will be on the initial 53-man roster next Tuesday? Could the Panthers possibly keep 7 receivers?

Plus, Shaq Thompson revealed that he was playing through a "bone-on-bone" knee injury throughout the 2022 season. Thompson also vouched for former App State cornerback Tae Hayes to make the roster, noting that he could "count on him". Could Hayes steal the final roster spot in the secondary? Might the Panthers decide to keep 10 secondary players?

The Carolina Panthers got off to a roaring start in 2021 starting the season off 3-0 thanks to a soft schedule and some injury luck. Looking at the Panthers first three games Julian Council thinks it's feasible that the Panthers could repeat a 3-0 start in a do-or-die year for head coach Matt Rhule.

Despite the 3-0 start in 2021, the Panthers proved to be pretenders instead of contenders. Julian explains why he doesn't think that will be the case if the team is able to get off to another flying start in 2022.

Plus, Terrace Marshall missed practice again on Tuesday. Is there concern for the second-year wide receiver?

Matt Corral heads to IR as the Panthers cut the roster down from 85 to 80.

The wait is finally over! Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule announced to the media on Monday that Baker Mayfield will be the team's Week 1 starter against Mayfield's former team, the Cleveland Browns. Julian Council breathes a sigh of relief and explains why this was always the case.

Now that Baker Mayfield is the starter, what does this mean for Sam Darnold? Will Darnold now be traded? Will Darnold ever get an opportunity to be a starter in the NFL again? Julian outlines the cold, hard reality that Darnold faced on Monday and where he goes from here.

Now that Baker is the starter, what is the ceiling for the Carolina Panthers in 2022? Could this team contend for the NFC South crown? Julian explains why he's all-in on a Year 3 turnaround for Rhule and the Panthers.

Plus, Shaq Thompson returned from the PUP list on Monday.

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule told reporters on Saturday that rookie quarterback Matt Corral is likely out for the 2022 season due to a "significant" Lisfranc tear.

What does this now mean for Corral's future in Carolina? Will Corral be healthy enough next season to compete for the starting job? Is it in the Panthers best interest to draft a QB in the first round if Baker Mayfield doesn't turn out to be the long-term answer at QB?

Should the Panthers coaching staff be blamed for the way they handled Corral's early development? Julian Council believes that this injury could've possibly been avoided had the coaching staff done a better job at putting Corral in a position to have success.

Will the Panthers now only keep two QBs or will PJ Walker fill the third QB spot?

The Carolina Panthers fell, 20-10, on the road in New England as the team highlighted the 2's and 3's in the second preseason game of the year.

While Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield both sat out the contest, PJ Walker and Matt Corral rotated quarters Friday night. Julian Council provided his thoughts on Corral's outing along with Walker continuing to be offered an "audition" for the other 31 teams.

Ickey Ekwonu and Brady Christensen were among the few starters who played on Friday night. Ekwonu had his share of struggles allowing back-to-back sacks early in the game. Ekwonu also had protection issues in his brief outing last week against Washington. Should there be any concern about Ekwonu at left tackle this season? Julian discusses the value of Ickey getting meaningful snaps during the preseason and why Panthers fans need to be patient with any growing pains.

Plus, an injury update and two players who stood out on Friday in New England.
