The Carolina Panthers report to Training Camp at Wofford in five days. Ahead of the season, Julian Council lists several young players who need to take the next step in order for the Panthers to have a major bounceback season in 2022.
ESPN ranked Carolina 31st in their NFL Future Power Rankings 2022, projecting all 32 teams for the next three seasons. ESPN cited the concerns at QB and head coach for the reasons their so low on Carolina. Julian Council tries to wrap his mind around why the national media has relatively ignored the progress to the roster and coaching staff additions that should set the Panthers up for more success in Carolina.
One of the main reasons the national media is selling Carolina heading into 2022 is the job status of Matt Rhule. Julian believes that that's not a good enough reason to bail on the Panthers. Are people overvaluing the importance of Rhule?

The Countdown to Training Camp continues as the Carolina Panthers are one week away from their first practice of the 2022 season. Julian Council goes back through the Panthers offseason providing his grades for the organizations coaching hires, free agency signing, draft, and trades.
Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer recently took a closer look at the Panthers trades the past offseason for Sam Darnold, Matt Corral, and Baker Mayfield, as the organization continues to aggressively pursue a franchise quarterback. By using the draft value chart, Breer presents an argument that the Panthers haven't overspent for any of the quarterbacks they've traded for. Does this justify the team's actions?
Plus, the Panthers unveiled new black helmets that'll debut in Week 10 vs. the Atlanta Falcons. Will the Panthers fully change their uniforms?

Former Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart sent out a tweet over the weekend expressing his belief in the 2022 team. Stewart tweeted, "just had an overwhelming feeling that the panthers are going to shock the world this year!!!! #KeepPounding". Can the Panthers shock the NFL world in 2022? Julian Council explains why he doesn't think it's all that crazy of an idea.
If the Panthers are in fact going to "shock the world" they'll first need to take care of business in the NFC South. Where do the Panthers stack up in the division? Is a 4-2 division record the floor? Has Carolina finally surpassed New Orleans? Have the Panthers closed the gap on Tampa Bay?
Plus, what will define a successful season in 2022 for the Panthers? Is it playoffs or bust? Julian explains why he thinks the playoff drought needs to end to look fondly back on the 2022 season.

Steve Ruiz, an NFL writer for The Ringer and a Carolina Panthers fan, returned to Locked On Panthers to react to the Baker Mayfield trade with Julian Council. Does Steve believe that Mayfield can make the most start in Carolina? Do the Panthers have a long-term plan at quarterback? Is the roster in a position to make a jump in 2022?

The Carolina Panthers brass has said all offseason that they need to do more to help incumbent starting quarterback Sam Darnold. General manager Scott Fitterer has rebuilt the team's offensive line, extended the top receiving threat, DJ Moore, and added competition to push Darnold in Baker Mayfield. Considering that Fitterer has done all of those things to help improve Darnold and the quarterback position overall, would it be a bad thing if Darnold ends up beating out Mayfield?
While Darnold and Mayfield will battle for the starting job, rookie quarterback Matt Corral will be reduced to a third-team, developmental role. While this could be the best thing for Corral long-term, is there potential negatives to Corral not getting first and/or second-team reps in 2022? Can the Panthers develop Corral enough this fall with him playing behind Darnold and Mayfield?
The Panthers have checked nearly every box this offseason. The lone box that remains unchecked is signing a veteran edge rusher. Fitterer provided an update on the situation of Carlos Dunlap, who visited the team back during mandatory minicamp. With or without Dunlap, has this been a successful offseason for Carolina?

Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer and new Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield both met with the local media on Tuesday to discuss last week's trade.
Fitterer, in his conversation with the media, detailed the team's months-long pursuit of the former No. 1 pick and why he felt that the time was right to add Mayfield to the team's quarterback room. Fitterer maintained that the starting job isn't Mayfield's, instead that the competition between him and Sam Darnold is "open". Are the Panthers truly committed to staging a QB competition between the two?
Fitterer also revealed that the team is taking a "short-term view" when it comes to Mayfield's contract and not committing to him beyond this season. At least for now. Julian Council explains why this viewpoint highlights the larger issue with the Panthers going back to the QB well for the third straight offseason.
Mayfield also met with the media detailing his tumultuous offseason while insisting that there is no animosity between him and his former employer, Cleveland. Yet, Mayfield expressed a different tone in an interview on Panthers.com. Either way, Mayfield recognizes that Carolina presents him with a fresh start and a chance to compete. Can Mayfield make the most of his new opportunity?
Multiple reports have suggested that the Browns felt that Mayfield lacked maturity. There have been several examples of Mayfield having a fallout with his head coaches. Will this trend continue in Carolina? Could Mayfield's competitive nature be a positive for the organization?

The Carolina Panthers addition of Baker Mayfield presents Matt Rhule's third Week 1 starting quarterback in as many seasons. Mayfield also presents the best opportunity for the Panthers to be successful in 2022. What should the expectations be for the Panthers now that Mayfield has arrived? Are the Panthers a playoff team with Mayfield under center?
Mayfield's addition to the roster in the immediate term should spell the end for P.J. Walker. Sam Darnold is likely the next quarterback to depart Carolina. Although, unlikely to leave until after the 2023 season thanks to his large contract. Rookie quarterback Matt Corral's future is more stable but his chance at starting in 2023 could be impacted by Mayfield's success or failure this season. If Mayfield performs to the level of his 2020 self, who lead the Browns to a playoff victory, what should the Panthers do? Would one season of success in Carolina warrant a long-term deal?
Plus, how Mayfield's presence can be beneficial to both the Panthers defense and his backfield mate Christian McCaffrey.

New Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield was provided a lifeline last week when the Panthers traded for the former number one pick. Mayfield will be fighting for his career in Carolina in 2022 while also trying to save the career of his new head coach, Matt Rhule. Can Mayfield save Rhule's job?
The arrival of Mayfield puts into doubt the future of not only incumbent starting quarterback Sam Darnold but of rookie quarterback Matt Corral. Corral now will almost certainly use 2022 as a "redshirt" season before possibly competing for the job in 2023. Is this the best thing for Corral? Had the Panthers been able to trade for Mayfield the night they eventually traded up for Corral would he be a Panther?
Robbie Anderson has had an interesting offseason, from commenting on the Panthers quarterback situation via social media to contemplating retirement to recently calling out his doubters on Instagram Live. Anderson's past comments on the Panthers interest in Mayfield could possibly create an issue between him and his new signal-caller. Will the two get on the same page prior to training camp? How much of a concern are Mayfield's past feuds for Carolina?
