Locked On Saints - Daily Podcast On The New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints running back Kendre Miller doesn't make the cut in the final 53-man roster projection after a strong showing by Jordan Mims, James Robinson and Jacob Kibodi throughout the preseason.

Khalen Saunders dealing with a calf injury and will miss a couple weeks, that pushes rookie Khristian Boyd right up to the top 0-1 tech spot while adding similar versatility to Saunders to move up to 3-tech when needed. Dallin Holker still seems safe at tight end, Rico payton makes the cut and the Saints change punters moving on from Lou Hedley and rolling with rookie Matthew Hayball.

What the New Orleans Saints will do at QB2 between Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler behind Derek Carr still remains to be seen, but Rattler has earned the gig. Looking at some in-depth analytics and the tape it is hard not to think that Rattler deserves to get those practice reps to develop and that he wouldn't give the Saints the best chance to win in case of a Derek Carr Injury.

Jacob Kidobi, Jordan Mims and James Robinson showing that the Saints' offense may not take too long at all to get under their belts. The passing game will have to match their tempo for success. Why Trevor Penning's performance against Titans was not confidence building.

The New Orleans Saints backup quarterback between Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener may have finally seen some separation. But that may not end in Rattler winning the backup quarterback job. After an incredible dime to WR Equanimeous St. Brown, the focus with Rattler should be much grander than backup QB behind bona fide starter Derek Carr.

Jacob Kibodi makes a name for himself in an wild and incredible day for the running back. Rico Payton shines again and the Saints may or may not have helped themselves on the offensive line.

New Orleans Saints' 53-man roster projection leads off with Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler battling for more than just a backup quarterback role behind Derek Carr.

The Saints' offensive line depth is under the microscope, Kendre Miller's status is also a hot topic, and the wide receiver competition is intense, with Bub Means, Kevin Austin Jr. and others  making a strong case for the fifth WR spot, but the final preseason game could be a game-changer.

On the defensive side, Rico Payton's injury might open the door for Shemar Jean-Charles at CB5, while Jonathan Abram is projected to start at safety alongside Tyrann Mathieu.

The New Orleans Saints offense with Klint Kubiak at the helm will benefit from the return of Juwan Johnson. He and Derek Carr will need to rebuild their connection, but Johnson should be of value in a ton of key areas in 2024. His ability to stretch and attack the middle of the field will be a welcome boost. His yards after catch ability will as well with more YAC yards in the last two years than Rashid Shaheed and more on average than Taysom Hill.

Johnson and Foster Moreau along with Dallin Holker (if he's healthy enough to make the roster) have the versatility to help generate a lot of wrinkles and eye candy for Kubiak's offense.

The New Orleans Saints offense needs its run game and its offensive line to lead the way, but if Derek Carr and Chris Olave are clicking, things get even better. How Carr and Olave looked in Saints training camp day 20 should give some hope for the better. Spencer Rattler the victim of another tipped pass and Jake Haener keeps finding big plays.

Paulson Adebo returns to practice and the offensive line competition continues to heat up.

The New Orleans Saints haven’t sugar-coated the frustrations with second-year running back Kendre Miller’s injury concerns. He has yet to participate in a training camp practice or preseason game since the first day of camp, where he left with a hamstring injury during individual drills. The talented TCU prospect now has competition with Jordan Mims, James Robinson and Jacob Kibodi. But how can one compete without being on the field? The challenges are mounting and the options are limiting when it comes to Miller and the Saints.

The Saints’ new wide zone scheme has evolved over the course of camp and the preseason. Camp position battles at LG, RT, S, and WR continue as Trevor Penning is challenged by Oli Udoh, Johnathan Abram Jordan Howden and Will Harris continue to battle next to Tyrann Mathieu and Kevin Austin Jr. may be losing ground to Bub Means at wide receiver behind Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed.

Follow the show: Locked On Fantasy Football – Daily NFL Fantasy Football Podcast

Sporting News.com's Vinnie Iyer and NFL.com's Michelle Magdziuk compare and contrast their contrarian running back rankings vs. consensus for 2024 fantasy football drafts, including who belings in the top tier behind RB1 overall Christian McCaffrey (if anyone) beyond the Falcons' Bijan Robinson. Also Vinnie explains why he's got Jahmyr Gibbs and Derrick Henry higher on the next tier ahead of Kyren Williams and Saquon Barkley. Then find out why Michelle and Vinnie differ on several RB2 options such as Rachaad White and Zamir White.
