Locked On Saints - Daily Podcast On The New Orleans Saints

With Michael Thomas, Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed on the roster, the New Orleans Saints have a dynamic trio of wideouts that could carry them through thick and thin. Even if an injury were to set in, the evolution and growth of the group would be hard to compete with along with quarterback Derek Carr, and the remaining skill position players.

Dennis Allen speaks on Jon Gruden's visit and Alontae Taylor breaks down the cross-training in the slot and his relationship with coaches Allen, Joe Woods and Marcus Robertson.

The New Orleans Saints defense, led by Demario Davis, Cameron Jordan and others are confident and plan to carry a lot of swag into the 2023 NFL season. Dennis Allen, Alontae Taylor and others want the handshakes, the trash talk and attitude that reflect a dominant defense and that's exactly the approach they should be taking on that side of the ball.

Breaking down the OTA lineups and post-June 1 names and transactions to keep an eye out for including Hunter Renfrow.

Expectations are high in New Orleans after the acquisition of quarterback Derek Carr and the return of wideout Michael Thomas. But those expectations are matched by some NFL experts as well like Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus. Trevor believes the Saints and Detroit Lions are destined for playoff appearances in 2023 and Carr is a big reason why.

Why Derek Carr’s struggles with the Las Vegas Raiders shouldn’t startle Saints fans for now, the importance of having familiar faces like Foster Moreau and potentially Hunter Renfrow in the mix and why Bryan Bresee will be the most impactful 2023 NFL Draft pick for the Saints thanks to defensive line coach Todd Grantham.

New Orleans also agreed to host a second round of joint practices this preseason, adding the Houston Texans to the list. What value these practices bring the Saints. What the additions of Jesse James and Jake Bargas mean for the team.

All that and more notes that you need to know from today's first day of Saints OTAs.

The New Orleans Saints can't expect their injury luck to turn on a dime, so keeping depth at quarterback behind Derek Carr is an absolute must. So unless the Las Vegas Raiders offer something outlandish, trading Jameis Winston makes absolutely no sense.

Alontae Taylor has a lot to benefit from learning to play the slot whether or not he stays inside or keeps on the perimeter. Hunter Renfrow trade watch is ongoing. Who would make the roster at wideout if Renfrow lands in New Orleans?

With New Orleans Saints OTAs in full swing for week 2, it was easy to see players that are separating themselves. Wideouts Rashid Shaheed and Chris Olave top the list. They and Derek Carr have quickly been building chemistry while A.T. Perry and Bryan Edwards won't allow themselves to be forgotten either.

Kirk Merritt and Alontae Taylor are both working at new positions. What challenges and purposes they face and serve and why the next week will be important for Merritt in particular. Attendance had a different feel on Tuesday as more players missed than the first week, but leaders like Demario Davis and JT Gray were present.

All that and more notes that you need to know from today's first day of Saints OTAs.

The New Orleans Saints still have not brought in a veteran linebacker. That could be because some vets are waiting for training camp to sign, but it might also be that New Orleans is encouraged by D'Marco Jackson's recovery and progress. If the Saints need another backer behind Demario Davis and Pete Werner as an off-ball linebacker, Jackson could be ready to give them what they're looking for.

How the Saints defense, Cameron Jordan, Tyrann Mathieu and Davis have led by example and can continue doing so. Will we see more Bryan Bresee and Isaiah Foskey at Saints OTAs?

Can the New Orleans Saints depend on quarterback Derek Carr's ability to elevate their offense and kick it into high-gear? He had some nice weapons with the Las Vegas Raiders last year, but the team couldn't win games. What separates Carr from the blame around the Raiders' shortcomings is exactly what will help him improve the Saints situation in New Orleans.

Bryan Bresee and Isaiah Foskey are effectively pro-ready in that they could take an NFL field today. But if they each improve a single, but important portion of their game, they'll debut at a whole new level in 2023.

All that and more notes that you need to know from today's first day of Saints OTAs.

The New Orleans Saints should absolutely try to team up wideouts DeAndre Hopkins and Michael Thomas. But there's one big road block in convincing him to team up with Derek Carr and the rest of the Saints' weapons. Are the Saints seen as Super Bowl contenders to Hopkins with him on the roster?

Jon Gruden's visit caused a lot of backlash and likely won't be worth it. But the idea of helping Derek Carr by adding Las Vegas Raiders concepts and revisiting previous Saints' schemes is a good direction. Just probably didn't need Gruden around to get that done.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr's ability to translate one offense to another will be pivotal to the success of the Saints offense in 2023. Why he, Cam Jordan and other veterans have placed such a big emphasis on OTAs and offseason work.

Head coach Dennis Allen believes Tyrann Mathieu may be ready to make another leap in the Saints defense and Foster Moreau speaks highly of Juwan Johnson and his leadership role.
