The Houston Texans don’t need to “stop” James Cook.

They need to stop the CONDITIONS that allow James Cook to become dangerous.

The Buffalo Bills are bringing a NEW defensive identity into Week 1 — and it could create absolute chaos for C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans.

Jim Leonhard vs. Nick Caley is one of the most intriguing chess matches of Week 1. C.J. STROUD BOUNCE-BACK SEASON? John Hickman is breaking down EXACTLY why they’re so high on the Houston Texans quarterback heading into the 2026 NFL season — and the numbers tell a much better story than the noise around him.

When C.J. Stroud was kept clean last season, he completed 72% of his passes — good for the Top 12 among NFL quarterbacks with at least 200 passing attempts. He also finished with more than 2,200 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and just 3 interceptions.

So what went wrong?

The Texans constantly put themselves behind the chains, with nearly 49.8% of their third-down opportunities coming on third-and-long. Houston also ranked near the bottom of the NFL in yards per carry and rushing success.

That’s why this season feels different.

With improved offensive line play, TWO guards capable of making an impact in the run game, a more comfortable and decisive C.J. Stroud, and an offense that should finally have some consistency, the Locked On Texans crew believes Houston could look VERY different in 2026.

C.J. Stroud is betting on himself — and the Houston Texans quarterback could be making one of the biggest financial gambles of his career.

Reports indicate Stroud is comfortable playing out the 2026 NFL season without signing a long-term extension before Week 1. Houston has reportedly offered Stroud a contract worth more than $50 million annually, but the Texans QB appears willing to bet that another big season could push his value closer to $60 million per year — or even beyond it.

So… RIGHT MOVE OR WRONG MOVE FROM C.J. STROUD?

The answer isn't as simple as it looks.

Top-tier NFL quarterback contracts are projected to continue climbing, potentially surpassing $60 million to $65 million annually by 2028. And if the salary cap reaches roughly $330 million in 2028, elite quarterbacks commanding 15-20% of the cap could be looking at contracts right around the $60 million mark.

If Stroud's bet pays off, HE WINS AGAINST THE HOUSE.

But if it doesn't?

The Houston Texans hold all the cards.

And honestly, that's why I expect this betting year to bring out the BEST version of C.J. Stroud.

Forget the idea that Stroud needs to be put in a box and turned into a game manager. NO.

If C.J. Stroud is betting on himself, then Houston needs to LET HIM COOK.

The stats need to follow. The production needs to follow. The big plays need to follow. And if Stroud delivers the type of season many believe he's capable of, that $60 million price tag could become very real.

Houston Texans fans, the practice squad is officially set… but I’m not convinced Houston is finished making moves.

The Texans finalized their practice squad, and when I look at the back half of this roster, I see something interesting: flexibility.

Houston still has areas where it can get better — wide receiver, running back and edge depth — and I have a conspiracy theory about why some of these players are here.

I think the Texans built this roster with TWO things in mind:

And then there’s the tight end room.

With Brevin Jordan joining the roster and Marlin Klein showing real progression over the last month, is one of Houston’s tight ends suddenly expendable?

Maybe.

Or maybe I’m completely wrong.

Either way, the Texans have options — and that could be exactly what Nick Caserio and the front office want heading into the regular season.

I say NO.

But we haven't really seen a Keylan Rutledge.

Big Red brings versatility, physicality and the type of interior presence Houston has been missing. The question now becomes just how high his ceiling can go.

Could his floor look something like the good Shaq Mason years in New England?

Could his ceiling eventually resemble Landon Dickerson?

And what about Aireontae Ersery?

Is Ersery's progression discouraging? Maybe. But there's an important distinction between what we've seen from Ersery and what we're seeing from Rutledge — and that difference could tell us a lot about Houston's offensive line moving forward.
