Locked On Twins - Daily Podcast On The Minnesota Twins

The Winter Meetings are in full swing as rumors and reports come flying out of San Diego. The Twins are very much involved as Carlos Correa remains their No. 1 target. In a surprising development, Dan Hayes reported Monday that the Twins are "open" to trading Luis Arraez for impact starting pitching. Let's break down everything going on in San Diego, including Trea Turner's 11-year, $300 million agreement with the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Minnesota Twins certainly have quantity when it comes to starting pitching for the 2023 season. Sonny Gray, Tyler Mahle, Joe Ryan, Kenta Maeda and Bailey Ober round out what should be a deeper group with Simeon Woods Richardson, Josh Winder and Louie Varland ready to step in when needed. The Twins still lack power at the top, which is why these starters make sense via trade this offseason. Let's dive into the market and assess the likelihoods!

The Minnesota Twins have work to do before they can field their team on Opening Day in 2023. They need to add talent to a group that won only 78 games in 2022 WITH Carlos Correa in tow. The offseason is likely to heat up this week at the Winter Meetings in San Diego. What can we expect from the Twins as the pressure cooker turns up on Correa's market and their need for improvement? Let's break it down! Plus analyzing Joey Gallo's market and fit with the club.

The Minnesota Twins front office often makes surprising decisions every offseason. Following the 2019 season, the club traded away top pitching prospect Brusdar Graterol for Kenta Maeda. After the Covid season, they brought in Alexander Colomé, whose advanced numbers showed cause for concern. Following the lockout, Carlos Correa became a Twin and the team parted with both Josh Donaldson and Mitch Garver in separate trades, mixing up the infield picture almost entirely. Do Derek Falvey and Thad Levine have more surprises up their sleeves? Like a signing of Michael Brantley or Cody Bellinger? Let's dive in.

The Minnesota Twins could use another quality right-handed bat in the outfield. Byron Buxton is a powerful force when healthy and in the lineup, but the Twins need insurance and a right-handed bopper in addition. Luckily, there's a free agent who makes perfect sense for the Twins this offseason. Let's break down Mitch Haniger's game and compare it to another less-seamless fit in J.D. Martínez. Comment your thoughts below on both of these right-handed sluggers!

The Minnesota Twins are in need of a competent catcher to pair with Ryan Jeffers for the 2023 season and beyond. Both Gary Sánchez and Sandy León are entering free agency after poor offensive seasons, opening up major holes behind the dish. The best free agent on the market is former Cub Willson Contreras, who may cost more than what many teams are willing to pay for a 30-year-old defensive question. Should the Twins get involved? Plus, Jim Pohlad hands off day-to-day operations to Joe Pohlad and José Abreu signs with the Houston Astros.

The Minnesota Twins, arguably in need of a starter better than Sonny Gray, could be a suitor for NPB star Koudai Senga. Senga, 29, posted an outstanding 1.89 ERA with 159 strikeouts in 148 innings in 2022. Senga has a fastball that reaches 100 mph and a nasty splitter to boot. Will Senga be the steal of the MLB offseason? Should the Twins get involved? Are they likely to be involved in this market? Plus, Jameson Taillon and his fit as a potential upside play in free agency. Let's dive in!

This Minnesota Twins regime has handed out only one multi-year deal to a starting pitcher: Michael Pineda. They've strayed toward the one-year deals, presumably reducing risk and avoiding landmines. Free agent starter Andrew Heaney enjoyed a breakout season in 2022 but was greatly limited by injury, perhaps dampening his value on the open market. Does Heaney fit the philosophy of this Twins front office or is he too much of a risk? Let's break it down plus the case of fellow lefty free agent Sean Manaea.

The Minnesota Twins entered this offseason with more starting pitching depth than Derek Falvey's front office has had since they were hired following the 2016 season. Even then, the Twins lack upside and have plenty of questions in the rotation with Tyler Mahle, Sonny Gray and Kenta Maeda dealing with injuries in 2022. Would free agents Chris Bassitt and/or Nathan Eovaldi solve the Twins' upside problem? Let's diagnose the case and figure it out!

As has been documented at length, the Minnesota Twins haven't had a clear ace on their pitching staff since Johan Santana won two American League Cy Young Awards in the span of three seasons. The Twins are in need of a horse to lead their staff in 2023 and beyond. Is former Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giant Carlos Rodón that guy? Let's analyze Rodón's potential fit in Minnesota and whether the Twins should pursue him again this offseason.
