Locked On Yankees - Daily Podcast On The New York Yankees

The New York Yankees traded Jordan Montgomery for Harrison Bader in 2022, and now Montgomery is pitching well in the playoffs for the Texas Rangers. Could he reunite with the Yankees? That’s one of our Fanmail Friday questions for this week. Stacey and Steve also discuss a possible Kim Ng-Yankees reunion, whether or not the Yankees have shifted their focus, i.e., player development, and Trey Sweeney’s future role with the team. Plus, do any front offices use analytics as an excuse for why trades don’t work out, and Stacey and Steve give their picks for breakout player in 2024. Then they talk about NLCS Game Three between the Diamondbacks and Phillies, which was one of the more exciting pitching duels so far in the playoffs and one of the more exciting endings so far in the playoffs, with the Diamondbacks walking off and winning a game at home to prevent the Phillies from going up 3-0 in the series.

The New York Yankees have two Gold Glove finalists for 2023! One is not too surprising, Anthony Volpe, and the other one, Anthony Rizzo, pretty surprising, given he only played in 92 games. We review their numbers and their fellow finalists’ numbers and figure if either one of them has a chance. Spoiler alert: We think Volpe has a shot. Then, we discuss the trade rumors/scenarios surrounding Gleyber Torres. Should the Yankees do it? Could the Yankees do it? When would be the time for them to do it? And what would that mean for the team? What would/could they get for him, and which team would want him? And finally, we discuss Game Three of the ALCS between the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers. Don’t forget to leave your questions for Fanmail Friday in the replies to the pinned comment below!

The New York Yankees had a rough 2023, but we’re going through all the good stuff because there was some good stuff! Gerrit Cole! He’s probably winning a Cy Young, and he had an amazing 2023. Gleyber Torres! He was pretty much the only consistent guy on offense all season. Aaron Judge (when he was playing)! He had that amazing series in Toronto and broke the Maple Leaf! Or that game against the Angels with the home run and the home run-robbing catch against Shohei Ohtani! We had German’s perfecto, Stanton’s 400th home run, Rizzo before his injury, and Jasson Dominguez hitting his first MLB home run against Justin Verlander and helping the Yankees sweep the Astros. The Yankees effectively ended the Red Sox’s playoff chances. Plus, the performances of Clarke Schmidt, Randy Vasquez, Jhony Brito, Michael King, the bullpen as a whole, Clay Holmes’ bounceback, Anthony Volpe, and the kids in the Minors! See? We can be positive! Then we discuss what’s happening in Miami with former Marlins’ GM Kim Ng; Nestor Cortes gave an interview (he’s also doing an alternate NLCS broadcast with Pedro Martinez and others on TruTV) and talks about some stuff, including riding the NYC subway and reveals something about Wandy Peralta. And finally, we talk about the NLCS; how about them Phils? Incredible.

The New York Yankees had a bad year in 2023, and many things went wrong for them, starting in Spring Training and continuing through until the end of the season. Stacey and Steve go through everything. All the injuries, the inconsistent performances, the player regressions, the players who shouldn’t have been playing and who were finally DFAd, Giancarlo Stanton, Carlos Rodon, Luis Severino, the nine-game losing streaks (kidding, there was only one of those) and so much more. Then the Athletic did a Yankees fan survey, and we go through the surprising and not-so-surprising results of that survey. What was the most disappointing aspect of the team? Which free agent should they go after? And which Yankees free agent should the team bring back? And finally, we talk about the ALCS and how the Texas Rangers are on a roll at the right time and the NLCS, which has started off in an interesting but not too surprising way.

The New York Yankees could have Bryce Harper, and Harper was on the Pat McAfee show on ESPN talking about how he grew up a Yankee fan and idolized guys like Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, and Derek Jeter. But the Yankees, according to GM Brian Cashman, already had six outfielders and didn’t need Bryce Harper at the start of the 2019 season. So Steve and Stacey played a game of what if. What if the Yankees did get Bryce Harper? Which subsequent moves wouldn’t have been made? Which trades wouldn’t have happened? How would the Yankees have performed in the playoffs from 2019-2022 if Bryce Harper was a Yankee? Then, they discuss an article written by Joel Sherman, who compares the current-day Houston Astros to the dynasty-era New York Yankees. Is he right? Stacey tries not to get sick when comparing the two teams. And finally, the Astros are taking on the Texas Rangers in the ALCS, and Jordan Montgomery pitched a gem for the Rangers. Montgomery has been pitching well so far in October for the Rangers. Are Yankee fans happy for him? Stacey is. Then Stacey and Steve discuss the NLCS and how they think it will go.

The New York Yankees have some things to decide this offseason. And in our Fanmail Friday episode, we were asked about the future of Brian Cashman. Will he have a shorter leash? Who do the Yankees go after in free agency? What are their needs? Did we see the AL East’s playoffs implosion coming? Does the Fall League give any guys an opportunity to be invited to Spring Training in 2024? Is there a way to give Giancarlo Stanton a different contract? One of our viewers came up with an interesting idea, and we discussed the possibility. And then we talk about the playoffs. The Championship Series is set on both sides, with the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers squaring off in the AL and the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks facing off in the NL. We talk about Philly’s performance against Atlanta and wonder if they’re the team of destiny this season.

The New York Yankees need some help this offseason, but should they trade for Juan Soto? He’s always one of the names mentioned in tandem with the Yankees, so Stacey and Steve decided to go through what the Yankees have and what the Padres need to see if a trade could work. If it did work, would he even stay with the Yankees once he was traded or would he dip and sign elsewhere in free agency? And there are other questions like, would he even help the Yankees? Is he enough to make them contenders? Or would he be wasted? Then, Stacey and Steve talk about Hal Steinbrenner’s quotes about the Yankees audit that took place over the past week. Does it mean anything, or is it just a performative act that won’t yield any real change? And finally, Stacey and Steve discuss the playoffs. The Phillies beat up the Braves, the Orioles are swept out of the playoffs, and the Astros are still annoying.

The New York Yankees are entering the 2023-24 offseason with many questions that need to be answered, and we’re asking one of our own: Should the Yankees rebuild now? We go through all the scenarios and types of rebuilds by talking about examples of recent rebuilds/retools by other teams like the Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, and Chicago Cubs. We also take inventory of what the Yankees have and what they need to determine if a rebuild is a good idea or if they missed the boat. We try to come to a conclusion, but it might not be as cut and dry as some fans think it is. Then we discuss the playoffs, which have seen some exciting results thus far, and we talk about whether or not we’re fully invested in this year’s games or not.

The New York Yankees have the most arbitration-eligible players in all of baseball this offseason. What does that mean, and what will they do about it? What is arbitration, and what does it mean? Steve explains that, and then Stacey and Steve try to predict who will stay, who will go, who will get a raise, and who will get a big raise. There are 17 players—six position players and 11 pitchers, and they go through everyone to try and figure out what the Yankees will do. They don’t have a crystal ball, but they do their best. Comment below on what you think the Yankees will do with these players. Then Staceu and Steve talk about the playoffs and how crazy they’ve been so far. The Phillies and Braves! The Orioles and Rangers! The Dodgers and DBacks! The Twins and Astros! Some series aren’t going quite as some people predicted, and others are slightly shocking.

The New York Yankees traded for Giancarlo Stanton before the 2018 season, and at the time, it was such a Yankee thing to do. Get the reigning National League MVP, who hit 59 home runs the previous season, and pair him up with another giant in the lineup who could have won American League MVP that same season with 52 home runs. It seemed like a match made in heaven. But now, as we head into 2024, we’re left to wonder, is Giancarlo Stanton the biggest bust in Yankees’ history? We go through the numbers so far and talk about how some numbers (batting average) have taken a steep dive while other numbers (strikeouts) are increasing. We compare his contract to others in the Yankees' recent and not-so-recent past, and then we wonder if Stanton can bounce back. And if he doesn’t, how long should the leash be? What’s the limit? When do the Yankees decide enough is enough and cut ties? It’s a deep dive, so grab a drink and a snack, sit back, and be sure to comment below with your thoughts about Giancarlo Stanton’s Yankees’ tenure so far and what you think the future holds for him.
