Locked On Yankees - Daily Podcast On The New York Yankees

The New York Yankees dropped their game on Tuesday to the Mets, 5-4 in Port St. Lucie. Stacey recaps some of the action from the game including Tanner Tully’s performance, a couple of good plays by Anthony Volpe and an interesting interview in the booth of Brian Cashman. It was an ESPN game so the big guns were there, including former Yankee and Met David Cone who was in the booth. Then, the Yankees made more roster moves and sent Spencer Jones plus three others down to minor league camp. It’s not a surprising move, but Stacey goes through his spring numbers. Yes, you can be excited about the future, but it’s not the near future. Bleacher Report ranked the Top 10 MLB aces. Guess who was number one? It’s a Yankee. And finally, Stacey consulted with ChatGPT and asked what makes a successful Yankees season and discussed the two squads from the past 15 years that fit the description and wonders if 2024 can also fit that description.

The New York Yankees are in full swing at Spring Training and only three weeks from Opening Day. So of course, media outlets are trying to predict the 2024 roster, including the lineup, rotation, bullpen, and bench. Brendan Kuty and Chris Kirschner of The Athletic revealed their Yankees roster, and Stacey discussed it. One part of it flummoxed Stacey, and Stacey wants to know how you feel about Kuty and Kirschner’s lineup, specifically. Then, the list of the Top 30 Yankees Prospects was released by MLB Pipeline. Stacey tells you who made the list, who made the biggest jump, who had the biggest fall, and some of the grades that scouts gave out. And finally, Stacey would like to re-introduce herself to everyone. How long has Stacey been hosting the show, where did she start, and what did she study in school?

The New York Yankees played three games over the weekend, and they lost two out of three, but don’t panic; it’s only spring training. On today’s episode of Locked On Yankees, Stacey recaps the weekend, which saw Gerrit Cole’s first Spring performance, Juan Soto crushing the ball, Marcus Stroman showing why the Yankees acquired him, and Nestor Cortes making strides. Then Stacey wonders if some overreacting is warranted during Spring Training and tries to figure out what you should be paying attention to during games in March. And finally, the Yankees made some minor moves as the roster takes shape because Opening Day is less than a month away and the Yankees may be facing an old friend when they head down to Mexico in a few weeks.

The New York Yankees play baseball in the Bronx and on today’s Locked On Yankees, we say goodbye to Steve. And in his final Fanmail Friday, Steve answers some questions (and so does Stacey) about MLB collusion, possible trades/signings to make before Spring Training ends, and DJ LeMahieu being a key to the Yankees' success in 2024. Plus, Steve is asked if he’s become a Yankee fan deep down inside after covering them the past two seasons and what’s caught his eye so far in Spring Training. Steve also answers a question about his ultimate career goals, his favorite minor league ballpark food, and more. And in our last segment, Steve says goodbye to Locked On Yankees and our awesome audience.

The New York Yankees had an off day on Wednesday, but there are things to discuss, like Juan Soto being an MVP candidate. Is that too much to expect from Soto in 2024, or is it a fair challenge for the outfielder? Soto also did a Q&A with The Athletic (linked below) in which he talked about a few things, but Stacey and Steve focused on some of his answers. Like how he was used to batting third but was batting second in 2023 with San Diego and how he wishes he could have stayed in Washington. Then John Smoltz was on The Michael Kay Show discussing Soto and his spot in the Yankees lineup, and Steve had some thoughts about what Smoltz said. And there are some injury updates from Spring Training and a small move was made for a backup infielder.

The New York Yankees are still connected to Blake Snell. We’re two weeks into Spring Training, games are being played, Opening Day is a month away, and Snell is still unsigned, but the Yankees seem to be the only team that has made an offer. Stacey and Steve discuss how ludicrous it is that after all this time, Snell is still unsigned but also linked to the Yankees. And adding fuel to the fire, so to speak, is Juan Soto, who played with Snell in San Diego and spoke about how great it could be to have Snell on the Yankees. Will it happen? Probably not, but they had to talk about it. Then, Anthony Rizzo, who is looking to rebound from his injury-shortened 2023, spoke to Meredith Marakovitz of the YES Network about the injury and about how good the Yankees lineup can be in 2024 now that it’s more balanced with the addition of Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo. And finally, what are Stacey and Steve’s expectations for the 2024 Yankees? They talk about Aaron Boone, the rotation, the pen, and the offense. You can leave your expectations in the comments below.

The New York Yankees don’t have a great track record regarding how they treat some of their prospects. Last season, Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza were battling for the starting shortstop position, and Volpe won it out of Spring Training, with Peraza starting the year in Triple-A. But now, in 2024, it seems Peraza might not even have a chance to make the roster as a backup infielder, according to quotes by manager Aaron Boone in an article in The Athletic (linked below). Stacey and Steve discuss the Peraza problem, which is self-inflicted not by the player but by management. Then, Nestor Cortes had his first outing of Spring and felt good afterward. It seems he revealed something about how bad his condition was last season in an interview with Meredith Marakovitz of the YES Network. Stacey and Steve talk about the revelation and discuss Nestor’s outing. And finally, Stacey and Steve talk about Trent Grisham, the forgotten man in the Juan Soto trade. He also talked to Meredith Marakovitz of YES and explained how he’s happy to be with the Yankees and how he understands and accepts his role on the team.

The New York Yankees have played three games so far in Spring Training and on today’s Locked On Yankees, Stacey and Steve tell you their three biggest takeaways from those three games. The Yankees so far are 2-1 in Spring Training games. They won Saturday 22-10 against the Tigers, and number one prospect Spencer Jones had a big game. On Sunday, the Yankees split their split-squad games. They beat the Blue Jays in Tampa and lost to the Phillies in Clearwater. More importantly, Carlos Rodon made his first Spring start and looked better than he did in 2023, and Juan Soto showed Yankee fans why the Yankees traded so much for him. Then, the Yankees have a new analytics guy named Aaron Leanhardt, who has quite a resumé. Stacey and Steve discuss the Athletic article about Leanhardt (linked below) and his addition to the coaching staff. And finally, Steve has a big announcement.

The New York Yankees are about to start playing Spring Training games and it’s Fanmail Friday! Stacey and Steve answer your questions about Aaron Judge’s proclamation that the Yankees have another move on the way; which teams around baseball do we think will be surprises in 2024—both positively and negatively, is it too early to be excited about Nestor Cortes’ spring so far, and how much better can Clarke Schmidt be in his second full year as a starter. They also answer questions about concerns about the bottom of the lineup, which cities they’d like to see MLB go to next on their world tour, what a Clay Holmes extension could possibly look like, who will emerge as the high-leverage multi-inning relief guy in the bullpen, will Volpe develop into a solid leadoff hitter and what are the top three things they’re looking for this weekend during the Yankees’ first games of Spring.

New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge spoke to the media at a press conference in Tampa this week, and he was asked about the addition of Juan Soto, where he’d like to bat, and how his toe is feeling. Stacey and Steve react to some of Judge’s statements, including a soundbite in which he discusses how he likes to pick the brains of his teammates, pitchers included. Then, an article about DJ LeMahieu on The Athletic talked about how LeMahieu prepared for 2024 after a not-so-stellar 2023 in which he struggled for most of the season. According to the article, the veteran infielder only took a few days off after the season ended before he got back to work. Aaron Boone and Aaron Judge both praised LeMahieu and have high hopes for him. Stacey and Steve discuss if it’s too soon to give LeMahieu the leadoff spot (as Boone said in the offseason) and wonder if he can have a bounce-back season. And finally, Stacey and Steve talk about some odds and ends from Spring Training, including Nestor Cortes feeling good after throwing a bullpen, Austin Wells catching Gerrit Cole’s bullpen session, and Gleyber Torre saying he wants to be a Yankee for life.
