Subscribe to our sister podcast Husman FC here or on any podcast app of your choice by typing it in the search bar!

This week, Nicola was joined by football historian Chris Lee from Outside Write to discuss the intersection of football and politics. Our interview centers around his most recent book Defiant: A History Of Football Against Fascism.

Chris takes us on a journey from Italy under Mussolini (8:10) to debunking myths about the politics behind El Clasico in Spain (25:30). We then hear the remarkable story of how a team that now sits in the third division of the Portuguese pyramid helped to bring down the Salazar dictatorship (38:30). There is also talk about South America (44:47) and an infamous Death Match in Ukraine (47:55).

You can find more content from Chris Lee on his website, Outside Write, here. And, if you would like to dive deeper into everything we've covered on this episode, checkout his full-length book here.

  • 40. Bready For Anything With The British Sandwich Association

On this episode, the guys welcome a very special guest as part of their ongoing investigation into sandwiches.

First though, Neil provides an update on spending his Thanksgiving in Turkey of all places, including a general vibe check and a sandy take on their coffee (1:00). Along the way, they manage to uncover a potential ongoing conspiracy at Big Orange Juice (5:40). Is there such a thing as orange juice with natural pulp or have we been trolled all along?

Then, for the meat between the two loaves of bread of the episode, Nicola interviews Jim Winship, the CEO of the British Sandwich Association (17:54). Jim and Nicola postulate on the size of the UK sandwich industry, its origins and future before diving into what all the listeners want to know: is a hotdog a sandwich? What about a burger? And will LIP be the podcast of choice for next year's Sandwich awards (SAMMIES)? Tune in to find out!

They round things off by calling a recent winner of the SAMMIES to continue building their network in the industry (50:30).

  • 38. Is A Hot Dog A Sandwich?

Listeners, this week is all about you! The vibes are as mundane as they will probably ever get as Neil and Nicola dive deep into our mailbag for listener inspired postulations and do their best to resolve some ageless debates.

First, an old loyal listener of the podcast comes with some pungent feedback and allegations geared towards Neil's recent performances on the podcast (4:40). Will this motivational Sir Alex-like figure ever reveal himself? Or will their anonymity live to see another day?

Then, they tackle a postulation which is very much the bread-and-sausage of LIP: Is a hotdog a sandwich (8:50)? Nobody holds back as official definitions are dissected, historical context is ruminated on and, ultimately, a unified theory is somehow reached. How does a hamburger fit in? And what about this weird, and somewhat vulgar, French-Danish innovation for holding the hot dog?

In another critical postulatory segment, they are asked which way they hang the toilet roll (27:00)? Neil reveals what a stickler he is for bathroom rules and Nicola provides a definitive answer based on a a patent from 1891.

Finally, a chaos agent cracker-maker provokes a postulation on the trials and tribulations of buying clothes for men (37:45). Can Neil fit into any t-shirts well? And what is Nicola's tactic for buying clothes for his wife without her having to return them?

Thanks to everyone that submitted something to the mailbag, we'll get around to more as we approach the 1 year anniversary of LIP!

  • Husman FC: Morocco's Atlas Lions

Here is an episode from our sister podcast Husman FC: a podcast for football nerds by football nerds. Make sure to subscribe to it's own feed if you like what you hear!

Chaos reigns supreme as the guys have a lot to catchup on following a big Champions League week. Roy breaks down Arsenal's chances to go through following a great Martinelli showing versus Sevilla (5:30). Then it's over to the San Siro where an inconsistent Milan side finally scored a goal (7:20). What is the general read on Pulisic's start at Milan? There is, of course, airtime given to the current toxic environment at Manchester United following a wild night in Copenhagen (16:58). Is Jadon Sancho really eating lunch by himself and what does Gary Neville have to say about it?

Then the core segment is all about the cult Morocco team that shocked the world a year ago by making a run to the semifinals of the World Cup (25:28). Following an emotional reading from Nicola, they go match by match through their historic achievement (30:30). Are their tactical masterclasses under-appreciated? And what exactly happened against France (51:45)?

  • 37. Mind Your Language

After a brief parental leave-induced hiatus, the entire LIP cast is back with a banger! In light of Nicola's new responsiblities, he ruminates on whether diaper changing could be the next big olympic sport (1:15). Should we differentiate between singles and doubles? Do we even need spectators due to the inherent high pressure?

Then, there is a special announcement about the growth of the LIP Podcast Network (3:02) before diving into our mundane postulation (4:45). Which LIP host is most likely to shamelessly dog-ear his books? What books should this be allowed for and when should a bookmark be leveraged instead?

Finally, our main postulatory episode is all about language (13:30). Our deep-dive sees us pass through what the most difficult languages we have learned are (15:40), some of our favorite language related party tricks (19:30) and what the studies say about the benefits of language learning (24:30). We then round things off with a quiz to test whether we can tell what language is being spoken totally out of context (50:35).

  • Husman FC: Mario Balotelli

If you like football (soccer), then give our sister podcast Husman FC a try and make sure to subscribe to it's own feed if you like what you hear!

This week Roy and Nicola finally dive into one of the biggest enigma's of the modern game: Mario Balotelli. How will history ultimately judge him? Did he fail to fulfill his potential? Or was he a misunderstood genius?

First though there is chat about Beckley's Beckham, Eden Hazard's retirement (1:55) and what it all says about the constant overload on the best players nowadays (5:10).

Then they postulate about how football historians will evaluate Super Mario Balotelli now that his best days are behind him (11:40). They cover the highs and lows of a highly turbulent career that saw iconic celebrations, fireworks exploding in bathrooms, camo-Bentleys with bags full of cash and much more!

Was Balo a generational talent? What role did coming up in a country that wouldn't grant him citizenship until his 18th birthday have on his evolution? Was he one of the most lethal penalty takers ever? And, ultimately, did Mario fail us or did we, as a footballing community, fail him?

  • 36. Parking Pains & Stroller Struggles

Back with a bang this week, we kick things off with a look into the booming industry of male hair transplants (4:38). Will either host be tempted to take the plunge as time and genetics continue to ravage our respective hairlines? Are we covertly morphing into a self-help podcast? There's only one way to find out.

From there it's back to an all-time favourite segment of the show - One Star Google Reviews (16:57). First, we take a trip to the Irish capital to inspect the less-than-rosy reviews of Dublin's worst-rated carpark. Just what makes this one so particularly egregious, and just how are they still in business?

Then it's off across the Atlantic to visit our old pals Canada - America's Hat, famously - and check in on a baby supplies shop that's been leaving their customers more than a little bit tired and cranky (32:46). Is this another predatory industry, preying on the inexperience of new parents at the expense of basic customer service? You'd have to imagine so, given how specific that question was, but listen in to find out for sure!

  • Husman FC: Super Depor

If you like football (soccer), then give our sister podcast Husman FC a try and make sure to subscribe to it's own feed if you like what you hear!

On this episode, the guys continue their dive into Spanish Cult teams this week by traveling to the Northwest corner of the Iberian peninsula to cover one of the most mesmerizing mid-market runs of the last half-century (2:08).

The tale sees Brazilians being pitched on the Rio of Spain, Barcelona being corrupt, Copa Del Rey party pooping and much more! How good was Deportivo La Coruña in the nineties and early 2000s? Nicola shares a personal anecdote about how he came to respect this team so much, Roy sings the praises of Fran and they postulate about what made it all possible and whether it could ever happen again.

They wrap things up by rounding up the last week's Champions League action (37:22).

  • 35. The Soup Can Olympics

On this episode of LIP, the guys start off with a mundane postulation around contemporary art forms (3:00). Can anybody truly be made to feel something by staring at a blank canvas with a black line drawn down the middle? Where do we rate Nicola's promising painting career? And what does Neil think about weird things coming out of soup cans?

Then, it's back to discussing friend (or foe) of the podcast, Jimmy Fallon (13:24). Do the latest allegations from Rolling Stone vindicate Neil's stance on Jimmy? And, perhaps most importantly, what does the whole thing say about the state of journalism in 2023?

Our core postulation comes with a French flavor as we turn our festival series to the Olympic games (30:20). Are we Olympic romantics or skeptics? Why do people keep watching them regardless of all the taint around them? And what is the actual product? Then Neil reveals a hidden talent in a very specific Olympic discipline before dropping a bombshell about a showing in front of 50,000 spectators!
