A Word for the Way --- Zephaniah

Redemption. It is possible. That might be surprising when your kingdom has devolved into child sacrifice to foreign Gods, but the reign of Josiah marks a return to form. The young king hears Zephaniah's words and in reestablishing the Temple, finds the Book of the Law. The Babylonian exile is still coming. Consequences still exist. But know that when a people fall and repent, there is hope around the corner.

A Word for the Way --- Nahum

At the risk of vast understatement...it has been a week. As we're continuing to come to terms with our national identity, our series on the Book of the Twelve, writings from the prophets to a nation with generations of divisions, is all the more true. Nahum speaks to the Southern

Kingdom. Like the Northern, they too are barreling toward diaspora and exile. And yet there are moments of profound hope found here; many repeated in the time of Jesus. The call is not for despair. It's for love. And love in action. Our name is still our mission. Now more than ever.

A Word for the Way --- Micah

So far in this series, we've seen the Northern Kingdom fall by the wayside and collapse to the Assyrians. And now the Southern Kingdom is taking its cues from the mistakes of the North. Micah challenges the people of the way about what kind of course they're taking and hopes to point them in the right direction. Thankfully, God's correction is not without mercy.

A Word from the Way --- Amos

As the Northern Kingdom barrels toward its destruction at the hands of the Assyrians, the prophet Amos has a lot to say about how culture had devolved. External idols joined the supposed worship of God. The divide between the rich and the poor was immense. Ambition had turned inward towards selfishness, not outwards towards community. Sound familiar? This isn't an easy book to read and hope is hard to find. But it isn't absent.

A Word for the Way --- Hosea

Faithfulness and Unfaithfulness. It's Israel's biblical history in a nutshell. There's always pain in betrayal; even for God. Hosea himself lived through a startling metaphor for this relationship. Consequences happen. But so does redemption. It happened for Israel. It can for today as well.

Reimagine Church --- Acts 17:24-28

What would the world be like if church was more like what happened when Paul visited Athens? A pre-eminent model of civilization at the time with amazing constructions honoring the Greek pantheon...and yet what Paul was discussing turned many heads and interested so many. How could we make the church such a compelling look at a better Kingdom that even the most fantastic idols of our own day fall short of the community created in an old theater in a college town?

Reimagine Church --- Acts 8:26-40

The story of Philip and the Ethiopian official is such an image of how we should imagine church. Beyond the obvious enactment of the Great Commission, it shows how the church should grow and for whom it is meant to grow. The Ethiopian church, which outdates Constantine's conversion, acknowledges this as an important part of their history. A subject who was effectively property of another despite his station realized he could worship one who takes wounds for the people rather than inflict them on his followers.

Reimagine Church --- Acts 11:1-18

Peter's vision of the historically unclean food is often debated at one of the key moments the movement of Jesus shifted toward Gentile membership. But we have to remember that the most important point was that people, not ritual, would define the church. We are known by how we love and come together.
