As therapists, we know how to put our stuff aside and focus on what our client needs to heal and grow. But how are you supposed to do that when your client is struggling with something that hits too close to home for you? 

As a longtime therapist myself, and a clinical supervisor, I know this happens all the time. Therapists are human too. Just like our clients, we also have breakups, and miscarriages, and conflict with loved ones. And we sometimes find ourselves in the strange position of counseling someone who is going through something we're going through ourselves.  

It can be emotionally triggering! And the best way to proceed isn't always clear. Sometimes we can practice healthy boundaries and compartmentalize our feelings well enough to remain effective. And sometimes, we're too rattled to continue working with the client ethically.
