As therapists, we know that healthy boundaries are essential... but when it comes to setting our own boundaries — with clients, with our work, and with ourselves — we can struggle just as much as the people we seek to serve.Â
Why is setting boundaries as a therapist so hard? First, we put our hearts and souls into what we do for a living! We can't just shut that off when the clock strikes five, and so we continue to feel emotionally engaged with our work outside of our working hours. Depending on our situation, you may even be putting in non-billable hours when you're supposed to be off the clock.Â
Second, the relationship between therapist and client is an usual blend of personal and professional, which means that maintaining appropriate boundaries requires a lot of thought and intention, more so than in other relationships.Â
And finally, many of us find ourselves in work environments where healthy boundaries are not encouraged or supported, and going against the grain requires a lot of courage, when it's possible at all.Â
Despite the challenge, we have to fight for our boundaries. We deserve to have balance, safety, and space to decompress — without that, we're of no use to anyone!Â
So, how can you create healthy boundaries in your therapy practice? That's what we're talking about on today's episode of "Love, Happiness and Success for Therapists!" I hope you find these ideas helpful, and that they make you feel seen and supported.Â
