Love Hate Relationship episodes

  • Rob Paulsen, Virtual Sport Sports, Bishop
    Love: Rob Paulsen

Alex reintroduces Andy to an array of their favorite cartoon characters and the man who voiced a truly ridiculous number of them, Rob Paulsen (@yakkopinky). They discuss his life, career, and projects before sashaying into a larger discussion of all the respect voice actors deserve, but don’t get from the industry. Clips galore, kiddos.

    Hate: E-Sports (Virtual Sport Sports)

Andy doesn’t (but probably should) sport a cane and a set of dentures as he shakes his fist at these kids and their new-fangled electronic sports leagues. He goes to great lengths to explain he hates leagues of video games of actual sports, but is cool with the hyper-unrealistic stuff, and Alex is just happy that somebody finally explained this whole Fortnite thing to him.

    Relationship: Bishop

An IRL question comes in from a listener who’s been burned by infidelity and somewhat altruistically wants everyone out there to think about how they would tell a friend their partner is cheating. Alex and Andy treat the subject with gravitas and only recommend alcohol as a primer two, maybe three times.

  • Hockey, Nickelback Haters, Jim Halpert
    Love: Hockey

Andy’s stepping up to take everyone on a journey through his lifelong passion for hockey. We get a little history on the sport, a lot of history on Andy and the sport, and Alex only makes a handful of references to the Mighty Ducks movies. They also go way in-depth on the fighting. Like, WAY in-depth.

    Hate: Nickelback Haters

Alex goes to great lengths NOT to defend Nickelback (a band he iterates over and over are kind of “meh”), but to tear down the lazy meme of hating on the band for no reason other than “they suck.” Andy learns more about their backstory than he ever wanted to know, and the two agree that most music fans are hypocrites.

    Relationship: Jim Halpert

A fan writes in to ask for advice on dealing with passive aggression in the workplace, and Andy and Alex end up discussing the balance between grinning and bearing crappy workplaces vs. walking away without guilt. Also, Andy recommends A Quiet Place and Alex has problems with authority.

  • Sondheim’s Assassins, YouTube Poop, Doogie Howser
    Love: Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins

Alex lets his Theatre Kid past come back to haunt all of you as he brings you a discussion of his favorite musical, Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins. Andy, also a fan, plays the perfect co-conspirator as they deep-dive this weird, surrealist exploration into the complicated stories and motivations of people who’ve tried to kill past US presidents, and they try not to get on any watch-lists.

    Hate: YouTube Poop

AKA Elsagate AKA parents beware, the internet cannot be trusted. Andy informs/horrifies Alex of the traumatizing trend of YouTubers creating intentionally traumatic content and slipping it into spots for unsuspecting parents and children to discover amidst their wacky songs and cartoon characters. Fair warning, it’s gross.

    Relationship: Doogie Howser

A listener writes in to ask for advice on how to make friends and meet cool people after escaping small town life for a new, hip, progressive locale. Andy recommends technological solutions, Alex keeps it analog, and both remind him that social anxiety is real, and that finding ways to mitigate is important.

  • Sam Kinison, Diets, Android 18
    Love: Sam Kinison

Comedian. Former Preacher. Tragically passed and terribly missed. At least by Andy, who calls Kinison his favorite comedian of all time. We talk best bits, problematic parts that maybe don’t hold up so well these days, and Alex learns the really dark story of how the man actually died.

    Hate: Diets.

Alex expounds on his loathing for all traditional diet advice, zeroing in particularly on favorites of the zeitgeist like Keto, Paleo, and even Veganism. Andy learns something about glucose and the brain, and we all have a good time.

    Relationship: Android 18

One of our incredible listeners writes in to ask about guilt over close, physical friendships while she’s married, and Alex and Andy basically spend the whole time shaming the toxic monogamy culture and telling her she’s awesome.
