Now semi-retired, in private practice, James recounts his years in the Alameda County Public Defender's Office and his path from Millburn, New Jersey through Columbus, Ohio, to Oakland, California.

James has handled every type of criminal matter known to the courts.  He served as Chair of the California Public Defender's Association (CPDA) and as Chair of the Criminal Law Section of the California State Bar.

He continues his distribution of his vast legal knowledge by offering ideas and advice to all attorneys. He encourages you to reach out to him for advice.

Matt Dalton

Matthew Dalton has spent his entire legal career representing people charged with crimes. After graduating from law school in 1997, Mr. Dalton was one of five young lawyers nationwide selected for the prestigious E. Barrett Prettyman Fellowship at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. There, he represented indigent criminal defendants charged with everything from drug sales to murder. At the same time, Mr. Dalton taught criminal defense trial advocacy at Georgetown University.

    Mr. Dalton returned to California where he worked as a public defender for over 11 years in Marin and Alameda Counties. During that time, Mr. Dalton tenaciously represented well over a thousand people charged with misdemeanors like driving under the influence and theft, and felonies such as embezzlement, drug trafficking and possession, domestic violence, sex crimes, and murder.  Mr. Dalton has successfully tried numerous misdemeanor and felony cases.  Mr. Dalton prides himself on zealously advocating and fighting for his clients.
 
    Mr. Dalton grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  He received his J.D. at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1997. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Indiana University, Bloomington.

If I had $3B or $4B, I'd work on what I'm already working on.

After graduating from UC Santa Barbara & USF Law School, Roz started her career defending the indigent criminally accused. She worked for the Office of the State Public Defender, the San Francisco Public Defender, and the Contra Costa PD, before landing a permanent job at the Los Angeles Public Defender's Office.  There she learned how to try serious felony cases and juggle busy calendars. After 4 years she returned to her beloved Bay Area. She now works in the Alameda County Public Defender's Office, and lives with her husband (also an attorney) and her two children in San Francisco.

Deputy District Attorney Erin Loback, currently assigned to resolve post-conviction matters, has prosecuted, tried and resolved criminal matters of every sort in Alameda County. She is the mother of twin girls, committed to fair and competent prosecution, enjoys cooking, TV, and just walking by herself listening to podcasts. Raised in Las Vegas, she completed her undergraduate work at UCLA. She was later active in the Southern California punk rock scene, performing in local bands.  Tamara loved the intellectual challenge of law at Michigan and gained her trial chops at the Riverside County Public Defender's Office.  She now handles felony and misdemeanor matters in Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

Born in Israel, raised in Orange County, California, Miki Tal first practiced law as a Deputy District Attorney New York City's Bronx County Courthouse. She served a stint as a law clerk in the Alameda County DA's Office, worked as a Deputy DA in Napa County, and served as a Public Defender in Santa Cruz.  She now practices criminal law in Alameda County, Federal Court, and throughout Northern California.
