Welcome to Lunacy; where we discern the sacred from the insane and admit that whether we like it or not, we are all profoundly affected by the cycles of the moon.
In this episode, I welcome my good friend, Leo Mercado. Leo is a botanist, a peyote expert, and the staff cultivation director and public liaison for the Morning Star Conservancy. We dive deep into the history of peyote, challenges around conservation, its uses, the culture around it, origin stories, and so much more!
The Morning Star Conservancy was formed to protect and sustainably care for peyote. Morning Star intends to educate those invested in protecting threatened habitats, ecosystems, and species about Peyote and its native ecosystem. Furthermore, Morning Star Conservancy intends to acquire land through purchase and land conservation easements in the Rio Grande Valley region of south Texas in order to protect the sensitive natural habitat of this rare and precious cactus. The vision is that the conservancy will be a living model of sustainable practices in today’s complex relationship between human society and nature.
