HEMOCHROMATOSIS
During a conversation about blood donation a while back, one of our listeners left a really interesting voicenote pointing out that some people donate blood much more often than the usual 56 days, due to a condition called hemochromatosis.

BOOK CLUB - CLARE POOLEY
One of my favourite books of last year was called The Authenticity Project – it was the story of how an unlikely group of people became friends through the act of sharing their true selves in an anonymous notebook left in the local cafe.

ERIKA MARAIS
It’s a pleasure to have our first guest in studio with us today to talk about the return of an award-winning theatre production called The Unlikely Secret Agent. It’s the story of the late Eleanor Kasrils, wife of former intelligence minister Ronnie Kasrils, and the role she played as a clandestine agent for the ANC under apartheid.
Erika Marais produces and stars in the show, which is back for a short run at the Artscape next week as part of its Women Humanity Arts Festival. On its previous run the show was nominated for 8 Fleur du Cape awards and won the Best Director award for Paul du Toit.

CAMELIAS
It’s my great pleasure to welcome back Richard Arm who is the resident horticulturist at Vergelegen estate in Somerset West. While we’ve kept you abreast of their restaurant news, it’s been a while since we reflected on their beautiful gardens, and what better time to do so than when the camellias are in bloom. Vergelegen is home to Africa’s only International Camellia Garden of Excellence, and right now is the absolute peak viewing time to enjoy it at its very best.

COUCH – SHARKBOY UPDATE
Earlier this week I suggested that sports minister Nathi Mthethwa should dip into his R22 million flagpole fund and spend some of the money on rewarding Banyana Banyana. Well yesterday a Cape Talk listener had a different suggestion for the minister about where some funds could be put to good use – in helping a former sporting hero who has fallen on desperate times.
Now we’ve told you before about the ongoing efforts to fundraiser for the Hassiem family, and I want to get a quick update today. Among the many people who have been trying to help are Cape Town’s open water swimmers. Shoneé Cornelissen is the chairperson of the Cape Long Distance Swimming Association
