  • Food - Fyn restaurant places 37th in world

    FOOD 2 – FYN

We shared the news last week that Cape Town restaurant Fyn had been voted the 37th best in the world. The accolade came via the annual San Pellegrino list which rates establishments all over the globe, based on the feedback of more than 1 thousand critics, chefs and gourmets. It’s the second time the restaurant has appeared on the list, even though it’s only been open for 3 years. Huge jump from 92nd in 2021 to 37th now.

I’ve had the utter privilege of eating there twice since it opened, so I can personally tell you I’m not the slightest bit surprised by their success. Owner and chef patron Peter Tempelhoff is out of town this month but it’s my great pleasure to have his Executive Chef and Culinary Director Ashley Moss with us in studio today to celebrate the news.

  • On the couch: Carte Blanche - GBV & Jaco Swart

    CARTE BLANCHE – JACO SWART

Virtually every one of us knows someone who has been a victim of domestic violence – yet it is a crime that remains under-reported, under-prosecuted and often difficult to prove, pitting one person’s word against another. Which is what makes today’s Carte Blanche feature so utterly infuriating – because it’s a story of domestic violence where charges WERE laid, a case WAS brought to court and very clear proof existed – yet the perpetrator walked away with a slap on the wrist.

The public however, has seen the evidence the court wasn’t shown, and it’s made a household name of one Jaco Swart as the poster-child for toxic male violence. Why is someone like that still a free man, living right here in Cape Town? Let’s talk to Carte Blanche producer Anina Peens who produced last night’s horrifying segment on the case…

  • Health and Wellness - Fertility doula

    FERTILITY DOULA

Anyone who has struggled to fall pregnant will know the anguish that comes with infertility and the often lonely road it might feel like. But this weekend an event is taking place that aims to remind would-be parents that they’re not alone – and to equip them with information to help and support them through their fight to conceive.

The Fertility Show AFrica is taking place in Sandton, but the talks are all going to be accessible online as well, which means that listeners here in Cape Town can also take advantage of the wealth of information to be shared. Best of all, it’s completely free of charge. The two day event will include medical experts who can update you on the latest advances in conception support, as well as psychologists, support groups, adoption and surrogacy experts, and nutritional and lifestyle advisors. You’ll also be able to hear from parents who have been through multiple pregnancy losses and disappointments, about their experiences along the way.

Now I’ll share the event details with you at the end of the segment, but first I want to talk to one of the speakers who is on the programme – Boitumelo Dibakoane is a fertility doula who is going to speak to the audience about what that actually is and what benefits the service of a doula can offer couples on a fertility journey.

  • On the couch - Saray Khumalo

    Couch Saray Khumalo

Such a pleasure to welcome back to the couch today mountaineer Saaaara Khumalo. We last chatted to her in 2019, not long after she became the first black African woman to reach the top of Mount Everest. The summit was still recent, the trauma she’d faced en route was too, and I don’t think it had quite yet sunk in just what her achievement had

meant to so many people. But since then she has had time to reflect on the journey, to reflect on the personal mountains she climbed en route to Everest, and to think deeply about what she has learned along that route. The results is her new autobiography called My Journey to the Top of the World, which has just been published by Penguin Random House

  • Music with Easy Freak

In today's music segment we feature the sounds of the duo, Easy Freak. Comprising of Dom Hurd and Jude Kenrick, the pair hail from Durban, and have been making music for more than 5 years now. Easy Freak’s sound is one that sometimes hard to pin down, drawing influence from so many different genres, including 70’s & 80’s funk modern day hip-hop, dance music and even jazz. Their latest track, entitled "Lazy" is a collaboration with one of South Africa's most popular musicians, Majozi. “Lazy” started off as a demo that they penned way back in 2017, before they relocated to Joburg from Durban. 5 years later, they got together and recorded the song, which is already getting airplay on KFM.

  • Life Hacks - Living Will

    VIRTUAL LIVING WILL

We’ve done lots of coverage over the years about the importance of drawing up a will which indicates what you want to happen to your possessions after your death. But we’ve actually had very little conversation around the concept of a LIVING will which tells your loved ones what you want to happen if you’re ever in a medical situation where you can’t articulate your own wishes for yourself.

I want to remedy that oversight today and talk about what a living will contains, who should have one, when they should be drawn up and how to do so. Joining me in studio is Dr Linda Holding, who is a palliative care trained doctor with 20 years' clinical risk management experience. She’s also the co-founder of a business called Swansong which offers online assistance in drawing up a living will.
