But the press of the day more or less dismissed her as a drunken skid row whore. And that leads me to wonder how hard the police worked the case and how well they secured the evidence. I'm also really baffled about why they never published the photo of the child."

The first report came the night of September 1, 1944, when Aileen Kearney claimed to have smelled a strange gas in her home and she experienced nausea and partial paralysis and her husband noticed a prowler outside their window. Over the following nights, similar reports poured in from across town. Witnesses described fleeting glimpses of a tall, thin man dressed in dark clothing and wearing a tight cap. Some even found physical evidence such as rags soaked in an unknown chemical near their homes."
