The Carlsbad Flower Fields are 55 acres of spectacular ranunculus flowers that paint a stunning picture on the hillside on the edge of Carlsbad, California. Recently, Visit Carlsbad invited me to a spectacular dinner among the flowers as the sun set over the Pacific Ocean.
Carlsbad is 45 miles from San Diego, 86 miles from Los Angeles, and an easy 117-mile drive from Palm Springs. Since I had previously visited the Flower Fields, I went early to show my road trip companion the entire breadth of the grounds.

Recently on a trip to San Francisco, I took BART from SFO airport to Embarcadero for under $6 with a Clipper card. Taking the escalator up to the street, the first thing I noticed was the Hyatt Regency sign. By nine o’clock in the morning, Spanish time, I was half-man, half-marinade. I was completely pickled. My hair had turned a dark velvet and my clothes were splattered blood red. I gave off the unmistakable bouquet of blackcurrants and baked plums with maybe just a hint of cinnamon.
I was engaged in close-contact hand-to-hand fighting of the most enjoyable kind.
