    For me Christmas would never be the same without the turkey roast dinner. I have had turkey at Christmas for many years (well apart from my teenage vegetarian phase) and we introduced Thanksgiving into our lives about 6 years ago and it was only right that the turkey would join us too.
    The funny thing is away from Thanksgiving and Christmas I rarely have any turkey a all. That is because living here in Portugal it is not a common meat to eat. The traditional food will always be the pork followed by the chicken and then after this people eat a lot of fish. This means that turkey will be overlooked and you only ever see it being sold in the supermarkets over Christmas and then you have to really go looking for it the rest of the year.
    It doesn’t mean we don’t love turkey because we do, but we save it for these two times of the year when it feels like that extra special treat.
    But when it comes to turkey people are often overwhelmed by it. Is it cooked right, will it taste dry, will it be flavoursome enough, will people like it and the list goes on and on. We don’t react in the same way when it comes to other meat and my reasoning there is that Christmas turkey is such a big deal and with it having such a centre stage then it needs to be absolutely perfect!
    Plus I also find that with a turkey due to its weight we are spending quite a lot of money on it and then have lots of leftover meals to get out of it, so if it doesn’t live up to what is expected out of it, then it will leave us really disappointed.
    This is when Dominic & I come into the conversation to help you out a little with your roast turkey. Many of you know this already that read our blog and listen to our Podcasts, but for those of you that don’t Dominic used to be a chef and his speciality was working as a carvery chef in charge of cooking the best ever roast dinners for locals. They were brilliant and when he left that line of work behind, I was still lucky enough to enjoy Dominic’s roast turkey but this time he was just making it for me!

    Today I wanted to talk to you about going Paleo. I remember when I first discussed it with my mum (who I may add has spent most of her life attached to processed foods style diets) and she asked if it was the raw foods diet and when I said it wasn’t she assumed it was a modern version of the Atkins diet.
    I tried explaining the rules to her of going Paleo and she still didn’t get it and in the end I ended up giving up.
    Though the compliments of how much weight I had lost and how healthy I looked helped me get over my frustrations!
    But the thing is most people just don’t get it. They don’t get what Paleo means, what it can do to their health and how just because you are following Paleo doesn’t mean that you are looking for weight loss.
    A lot of the time it is just about re-conditioning your body and eating the food that we should all eat if we are not kidnapped by the powerful adverts that we often watch on the TV from the brands that want us to eat their processed foods.
    For us though we changed one bit at a time. We didn’t go from eating lots of canned and frozen produce to suddenly cooking fresh everyday. It was a gentle progression. Having said that we still have a soft spot for a few non-Paleo foods and for this reason we stick to a 75% Paleo way of life. This means that 75% of our plates are full to bursting with Paleo foods and shows that you can make a huge difference with just small changes.
    Health experts have said that just by reducing our processed foods in our diet that we can make a huge impact on our lives.
    So listen away (or read away if you are accessing the transcript or the blog post) while I explain to you all about Paleo and why we should all follow the Paleo way of life!
    The Ultimate Guide To Going Paleo

    If you are reading this you will be able to see the infographic above. If not you can access it at recipethis.com/gopaleoinfographic.
    The starting point of Paleo is that it bans (or asks you to limit) the consumption of certain foods. These include:

    * Processed Foods
    * Grains
    * Beans, Peas & Pulses
    * Refined Oils
    * Soy

    Today I wanted to talk to you about sponsored opportunities and making a good living from your food blog. This is a very big part of running a food blog or a blog in any niche for that matter and is something that you should be thinking about from day 1.
    I used to read in the past that food blogs should not try to monetise their food blogs until they hit 100,000 page views. Well I have never heard anything so crazy in my life as when you hit this level should be the time when your income has really taken off, not that it should start at that level.
    I also know of two very popular food blogs that have been around for 6 years and didn’t actually monetise at all until they had passed the 250,000 monthly page views threshold. I cry for them when I think of when they could have started and how far they could have gone by that point.
    So whether you are just starting out or have an older blog that has got traffic but you have not quite figured out how to monetise it then this is for you. It is also a Podcast based on our own case studies of what has happened to us as we have gone from zero traffic to 60,000 page views a month.
    So get comfy and let’s dive straight in!
    Understanding Sponsored Opportunities
    First things first let’s think of this from an earnings point of view. If you read income reports (or write your own like we do) then you’ll know that unless they do a lot of recipe development work for other bloggers that the bulk of their income will be sponsorships.
    Advertising networks are of course great and we have been with Adsense for 10 years now so we appreciate what they are all about and how they bring us regular money. But the sponsored reviews, recipes, social media is what will make you the most.
    The worst thing for us though is we live in Portugal, we have a good US, UK & Australian readership base and many American companies will not touch you if you don’t have a US address with a US Amazon Prime account. It can make it very difficult and frustrating ...

    Today I wanted to talk to you about the Tailwind tribes. Last month we talked about Tailwind and how important it is for your Pinterest promotional plans. But the hot topic on every food bloggers mind at the moment is Tailwind Tribes and what they can do for them.
    It reminds me a bit of when Twitter first became popular. You had this new social media tool that was perfect for social media and for building up your brand but nobody really knew for sure what to do with it.
    I remember when I said I was joining Twitter and someone said to me “you do know you have to tell people when you go to the toilet?”. And that you don’t have to do that when you’re on MySpace. Clearly it was 2008 and things have changed a lot since then and people have a much better understanding of what social media is.
    But when you first discover the tribes on Tailwind it can be really scary because they are so new that hardly anyone is talking about them at all.
    The Tailwind Tribes are free to use and are still in beta and it is so much fun to get involved in something that is in its early stages. But gaining an understanding is tough and I must admit it took me about 2 weeks to get my head around them and fully understand what they were about and how they could help my food blogging site. Therefore with them being free you could get to grips with the tribes before you look into Pinterest group pinning to see what kind of traffic it can bring you.
    So let’s get started!
    The Tailwind Tribes
    First things first you will need a Tailwind account to get involved with the tribes and you can get yours for free by clicking here. No obligation to sign up and the Tribes offer you a fantastic way to get your name out there and to kickstart your Pinterest traffic machine.

    Today I wanted to talk to you about using knives in the kitchen and how to make the best use of your knives. I remember when I was growing up because there was not that much cooking going on there really wasn’t that many knives available.
    I remember one for peeling the vegetables with, one for chopping up the cheese and I don’t really remember any beyond that. There was also this weird looking electrical one that was very 80’s and was for carving the roast dinner meat at the table.
    Everyone had the electric carving knife and it was for the man to show off his knife skills to the guests while everyone was sat around the dinner table on a Sunday afternoon.
    I never used the electric one but always loved the other two. There was no peeler around and I was the worst potato peeler with a knife that you had ever seen. It was a case of doing a giant potato and peeling it ready for chips and losing ½ the potato as I did it. I would get shouted at for that and clearly I was never allowed near the carrots! It actually feels weird saying that and that there was a life before the trusted peeler!
    With the cheese knife I absolutely loved that. It was perfect for chopping cheese or bread with and even better for chopping up bacon.
    [clickToTweet tweet=”#CookingTips #Podcast – The Ultimate Guide To #Cooking With #Knives via recipe_this” quote=”#CookingTips #Podcast – The Ultimate Guide To #Cooking With #Knives via recipe_this”]
    But when I look back there was never any thought to knife safety and I don’t recall anyone (other than a chef) ever owning a knife sharpener. Eventually the knife died and it would go in the bin and another one would be bought.
    But now we are in the modern world and what was in the kitchen in the 1980s is so different as to what you have now. We now have knife sharpeners, different coloured chopping boards, huge knife ranges, good quality knife holders and so much more. It makes cooking so much easier and nowadays there is no excuse for chopping your fingers with the knife. Not that we will ever totally stop this as I think we all get side tracked in the kitchen every now and again.

    Today I wanted to talk to you about Tailwind. If you’re not familiar with Tailwind then put in simple terms it is a scheduler for Pinterest. Here at RecipeThis.com we have tried other schedulers but not one of them has matched up to this one.
    We are also the frugal type of food bloggers so we don’t spend money on our food blog unless we have to. So for us to spend just over $100 a year for something it has to give us something special.
    Well most people are on Pinterest for traffic and to use it to grow their social media activity and it has certainly done that for us.
    Here is our Pinterest traffic the day we started on Tailwind:

    1685 sessions was what we had for the last 30 days. This had become the norm and for a food blog that was just six months old we were relatively happy with this result. However we were still looking at our former site that got a lot of traffic from Pinterest and wish we could have the same success.
    But  Pinterest has changed a lot since then and you could just post your recipes in 2013 and not have to make any effort. But with more and more people using it and promoted pins you have to go that extra mile.
    So we started on Tailwind and this was our first full month on Tailwind:

    3672 sessions was what we have had in the last month in comparison. This means that we have more than doubled our traffic. We have also added approximately one thousand new followers to our Pinterest account too.
    Normally to have that kind of growth you would need one of your updates to go viral but thanks to Pinterest Groups and incorporating it into Tailwind you can achieve this on your own. So let me explain how:

  • CT FM 014: Frugal Holidays Part 2

    You can also listen to the Podcast via SoundCloud, Audioboom & Stitcher.
    Welcome to our fourteenth Podcast at Recipe This and welcome to our latest cooking tips Podcast.
    As I write this we are back at home having had a lovely two weeks in Spain. We ate out a lot enjoying lots of Spanish tapas, great restaurants, great days out and a four star hotel with three swimming pools. We also drove there and back from our house in Portugal and even after all these costs we still spent half the price of what we would have done if we had been on a package holiday in a three star hotel.
    It actually rather amazed us in the savings that could be made on a holiday if you shopped around.
    We had an amazing time and it was a great family holiday for the four of us.
    But it did give us a reality check about the cost of package holidays and how if you are frugal you can go on holiday and save a small fortune. That money can then be spent on other things instead of being wasted on a holiday.
     Now we plan to do the same thing again next year and we want to share with you in the CTFM 014 how we did it.
    This Podcast will be split into the following main areas:

    * Introduction – I will be sharing with you about mistakes I made on other holidays and how you can save money just by following a few basics.
    * Eating Out On Holiday – I will show you how to have the best ever meals out as a family without it breaking the bank. Can you believe I had delicious tapas for just 60 cent?
    * Frugal Holiday Breakdown – Discover how much money we spent on our holiday and how to have a holiday full of delicious great food without it breaking the bank.

If you work at it, it is like you have gone from having exposure to 5000 followers to suddenly 100,000 and this will give you the ideal chance to go viral as they say.
    If you want one of your pins to go viral and have the chance to get 1000 repins then this is the perfect place to start and it is super easy to run that you can run it on just 5 minutes a day. Though, we timed ourselves and did it in 3.5 minutes to the 80 groups we are currently members of!
